To call our baby Huckleberry?

We are really struggling to think of boys' names for our second baby (due in 3 weeks.) We have no idea if it will be a girl or boy. The girl's name is all sorted but we already have one boy and have kind of peaked with naming him. My husband came up with Huckleberry and says he is not joking. I really like it but don't know if I'm brave enough. We are not American and feel it is a very American sounding name so maybe would be out of place. Also would it work for an adult? Would an adult named Huck sound like a complete tosser? I should point out that we live in a very alternative area with lots of unusual names around.

Is 3yo Biff or Chip, then? Grin

PacificDogwood · 18/10/2014 19:22

Even Baylor is better than Balonz though Grin

pacific excepting that Baylor appears to be real.

Moghedien · 18/10/2014 19:24

Just call him Balonz.

BOFster · 18/10/2014 19:29

Linus is great. Isambard is fantastic too- a friend of mine nearly went for that but bottled out at the last minute Grin

queenmools · 18/10/2014 19:34

No 3year old is not chip or biff as I wanted to avoid themed names Grin

I like Huckleberry (Huck) and Marmaduke (Duke). Also Maximillian and Julian.

Call the child whatever you want.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 18/10/2014 19:51

Queen Why not go for Isambard, you can get nicknames from it and your DH is an engineer, its perfect.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 18/10/2014 19:52

Wasnt there a mumsnetter who's DP wanted to call their DS, Washington?

squoosh · 18/10/2014 19:55

Humphrey and Nigel are Very Bad Names.

I cannot permit the recommendation of them to remain unchallenged.

BOFster · 18/10/2014 19:57

Tali, it really is, isn't it? I agree with you- it just fits.

AskYourselfWhy · 18/10/2014 20:14

I think huckleberry is a bit too much and I don't like Huck

How about..
Atticus
Leander
Leollan/ leolan
Zebedee
Zebedia (I really can't spell that but you know what I mean)
Barnabus. (I knew a boat called Barnabus)
Huxley
Linus
Isambard
Mortimer
Dominic
Montgomery (I wouldnt ..)
Lancelot
Horatio
Emerson
Nathanial
Casper

AskYourselfWhy · 18/10/2014 20:17

Wow Shock at Bear Grylls's kids names.

Jesse is nice though

brainfidget · 18/10/2014 20:18

Zebedee ??? Sure, or perhaps Bungle, as a fan of 70's children's programmes. Grin

sonjadog · 18/10/2014 20:26

You'd need to have four kids: Zebedee, Bungle, Zippy and Geoffrey.

toodledoo678 · 18/10/2014 20:27

Atticus weird
Leander makes me think of Leylandi trees
Leollan/ leolan Cut to the chase and call him Leo
Zebedee really?
Zebedia (I really can't spell that but you know what I mean)
Barnabus. (I knew a boat called Barnabus)
Huxley pretentious
Linus like this one
Isambard plain daft sounding
Mortimer ^sounds like Morticia/Mortuary
Dominic not bad
Montgomery (I wouldnt ..)
Lancelot 'rhymes with sir farts a lot
Horatio what what
Emerson sounds like the name of a rough estate
Nathanial not bad
Casper especially good at Halloween

AskYourselfWhy · 18/10/2014 20:45

Lol Toodle I was trying to think of what the OP might like. I figured if you like Hucklebury then you like off the wall names. Rest assured my own. DC are all very boringly named.

Although I actually like Leo, Nathanial and Leander.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 18/10/2014 20:46

Maric.........just throwing that out there.

Anewmeanewname · 18/10/2014 20:47

I actually encountered a Huckleberry at a baby & toddler group recently. The DM seemed very proud of his name, and everyone was telling her how clever & original it was. I suspect this thread offers a reasonable clue as to what some of them were really thinking.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 18/10/2014 20:49

I sense a few liars in that group Anew

DD used to be in Nursery with a kid called Boden.

helzapoppin2 · 18/10/2014 20:53

My son has an unusual, but not unique name, and it's one that can be boy/girl. Ok at school, but now he puts it on job applications I wish I'd gone for something a bit more conventional. It's hard enough out there as it is!

toodledoo678 · 18/10/2014 20:54

If the baby is called Huckleberry (4 syllables), then it would only really go with a one syllable surname eg Finn. Anything longer would be even more wrong if that's possiblethan lumbering your child with the name Huckleberry in the first place .

HappyAgainOneDay · 18/10/2014 21:06

I knew someone called Cornelius .....

WerkSupp · 18/10/2014 21:09

I worked with a guy called Lancelot at Uni. In his defence, he was born in 1970 and his parents were complete stoners and acid heads.
