To call our baby Huckleberry?

We are really struggling to think of boys' names for our second baby (due in 3 weeks.) We have no idea if it will be a girl or boy. The girl's name is all sorted but we already have one boy and have kind of peaked with naming him. My husband came up with Huckleberry and says he is not joking. I really like it but don't know if I'm brave enough. We are not American and feel it is a very American sounding name so maybe would be out of place. Also would it work for an adult? Would an adult named Huck sound like a complete tosser? I should point out that we live in a very alternative area with lots of unusual names around.

I went to school with a boy named Tracey. He was a white South African. There were issues in a class dominated by Marks, Michaels, Johns, Andrews and Philips.

Ha. Thanks Pacific. Wink

Linus is ace.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 18/10/2014 17:10

I love Linus, its so cool.

TheRealJoanWarburton · 18/10/2014 17:10

Huckleberry? Excuse me while I die laughing.
'Perciville' is, usually, 'Percival'. But don't trust me. I can't spell 'stationery'. even when I look it up.

And if you want a guide to my common sense - I wanted to call a son 'Xareth'. That's a 'z' sound. Blush

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 18/10/2014 17:12

I found a name I love that was made up for a fanfic of mine and I realised it is an actual name. Its Aurain

cedricsneer · 18/10/2014 17:13

I'm glad people like Linus. Isn't it in the same league as huckle though? I always thought so... Maybe I am deluded with my huckleberry-love?

squoosh · 18/10/2014 17:15

I don't think Linus and Huckleberry are even in the same ball park. Linus is a legitimate name that just isn't that common in the UK. Huckleberry is wholly linked to Huck Finn.

I'd like to express my love again for Huckleberry Finn, greatest American novel of the 19th c in my opinion.

There was a young lady called Aurain
Who went on her hols to Bahrain
...........

PacificDogwood · 18/10/2014 17:18

Oh, I love Huckleberry Finn - the novel and the character.
Still would not chose it for my child.

And I love and adore Charlie Brown and all its characters Grin - would've loved a Charlie but was only 'allowed' it as a middle name.

limitedperiodonly · 18/10/2014 17:19

I must say that Isambard Kingdom Brunel was rather sexy.

cedricsneer · 18/10/2014 17:19

But doesn't a truly loved and historically acclaimed fictional character (like huckle the cat Wink) legitimise a name?

Yes Linus is much used and was also the name of the second Pope so I suppose more mainstream.

limitedperiodonly · 18/10/2014 17:21

Yes, Linus is the name of the nerd from Charlie Brown. Even nerdier than Charlie. No. No. No.

cedricsneer · 18/10/2014 17:21

But doesn't a much loved fictional character (like huckle the catWink) legitimise a name?

Yes Linus much more mainstream - second Pope was a Linus (my mum claims this is the provenance of my Linus - obviously he was named after Linus van pelt)

PacificDogwood · 18/10/2014 17:22

Linus is adorable and a misunderstood genius
So not a nerd.

cedricsneer · 18/10/2014 17:22

Limited, nerds are cool.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 18/10/2014 17:22

Tis a boys name Squoosh

WookieCookiee · 18/10/2014 17:23

I wouldn't choose Huck, but I wouldn't ridicule someone for choosing it - it would be ludicrous! (OED: so foolish or unreasonable as to be amusing).

I would possibly point out that Marmaduke is well know as a Great Dane, as well as the son of Bear, and highlight the Huck/Fuck scenario Grin.

PacificDogwood · 18/10/2014 17:23

Nerds are cool, but Linus is not a nerd

Roussette · 18/10/2014 17:23

The thing is.. Huckleberry doesn't even sound nice. It doesn't trip off the tongue, it doesn't sound cool (like Linus), it sounds like a mouthful and it sounds like a joke.

cedricsneer · 18/10/2014 17:24

Haha Pacific I love you. You are right. He is a misunderstood philosopher. I have some first editions of his books. I love him.

BigfootFilesHisToesInYourTea · 18/10/2014 17:25

Linus Torvalds is the famous Linus; anyone vaguely techie will have heard of him, thanks to Linux.

squoosh · 18/10/2014 17:25

I think 4 syllables are just way too much. I'd be exhausted from saying Huckleberry after two days.
