Worrying about pertussis.

Anyone know if it's doing the rounds this year? DS has been feverish for about 4 days with a persistent cough that's quite exhausting, real heaving bouts of it.
He was vaccinated, but I know that it is possible to get it even after vaccination as that happened to me.
I'm not in a state of dread - DS is 10 and generally quite robust - but I don't like this cough.

There's usually a spike in early autumn but haven't noticed one local to me yet.

More commonly known as Whooping cough, I believe

Germgirl · 16/10/2014 10:09

It's Whooping Cough mrs. It is going around, has been for quite a while, a couple of people at work have had it. Take him to the doctor if you think he has it, it can be treated with antibiotics.
Hope he's better soon.

BeyondPreparedForHell · 16/10/2014 10:14

Not heard of it locally here either (s wales)

Can you call your gp and see what they advise? They might want to see him or might be okay to wait and see a little longer.

KnackeredMuchly · 16/10/2014 11:08

I'm in the NW, I think it's around as the GP thought my uncle might have it.

Yanbu to go to the doctors if you're concerned. My DM has just had a horrendous chest infection for over a month - but not whooping cough. Apparently it's going round her circle.

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 16/10/2014 11:17

Hi op, we all had it mildly me and dcs while I was pg with dd4.

None of us realised at the time and just thought a cough.

Dd was a huge healthy ebf baby and at 2 weeks started to get this wheeze, fight for breath, go absolutely navy blue and almost sounds like a growl in a cough.

She was diagnosed with whooping cough and was very ill. Obviously she had got a bit of protection from me but still was very ill.

Take your ds to the doctor.

inadarkplace · 16/10/2014 13:24

whooping cough is quite distinctive in its whoop ive had it after i was vaccinated too but its "unlikely" these days could it be croup?

foolonthehill · 16/10/2014 13:31

croup would be very unusual in a 10 year old.

SolidGoldBrass · 16/10/2014 15:25

THanks everyone. I took DS to the doctor, who says it's a chest infection but probably not pertussis - however, he has given DS an antibiotic of the sort that will clear pertussis if it is that.
