to think that so-called psychics should not be exploiting publicly reported deaths to make themselves look clever

This man from Woking died of a heart attack during a cycle ride, as was reported at the time:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2721810/Girlfriend-Kris-Cook-died-RideLondon-race-pays-tribute-partner.html

So what does so-called Sally Morgan during a show in Woking:

www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/surrey-news/girlfriend-upset-psychic-sally-morgans-7913186

She claims to be receiving messages from him to his girlfriend.

AIBU to think that she is a shameless, manipulative con-artist?

sorry, 'so-called psychic Sally Morgan'

writtenguarantee · 14/10/2014 11:38

the problem is that people believe them.

bodhranbae · 14/10/2014 11:42

They are scum of the fucking earth.

I was dragged kicking and screaming by a friend whose daughter had been killed in a car accident to see some charlatan do her stuff - it was not long after a terrible fire locally had claimed the lives of 6 children.
And yes she exploited it for ALL it was worth.
She started saying "I can smell smoke" and the whole place erupted in screams and wails.

I despise them. Exploiting people at their most vulnerable. Evil. True evil.

bluevanman · 14/10/2014 12:16

I absolutely hate psychics!
Half my family are believers and I'm dick of hearing about "how good" this local one is!

Her best/worst trick was telling a recent pregnant widow that her dead DP was sending a message.. Some ambiguous clues... that lead to a jewellers shop, who surprise surprise had a deposit on a £2000 engagement ring with DP name on it.

She held a fundraising night where the psychic offered her services for free and they raised money doing readings on family and friends to buy the ring.

Her DP was a horrible excuse for a man, she often had black eyes from his drink-rage. But she kept going back to him, we were all quietly glad he had died.

She wears the ring proudly and his daughter thinks he was a bone-fide saint

Ifyourawizardwhydouwearglasses · 14/10/2014 12:21

Nope, these charlatans are total scum.

ILovePud · 14/10/2014 12:23

Some 'psychics' are despicable, anyone who makes money exploiting people in desperate circumstances or intruding uninvited into personal grief is warped. I do know some people who go to spiritualist churches though and find the messages they receive there a comfort. I think some people genuinely believe that they are psychic and their intentions are good. Personally I'm an atheist and so view all religious/supernatural stuff as made up or wishful thinking. I suppose if it brings comfort and is done cynically or purely for profit then I don't have a problem with it.

KnackeredMuchly · 14/10/2014 12:55

She's a horrible manipulative witch. To do what she did is pure callousness and nothing else

bluevanman · 14/10/2014 13:23

KnackeredMuchy that is absolutely fascinating! I can't believe how many people believe!

ChelsyHandy · 14/10/2014 13:28

YANBU. Been to two of these things (involving so-called psychics) and it was pretty obvious to anyone with a healthy dose of scepticism that all the (limited) information they provided could easily have been done by a bit of clever questioning, research easily available by asking the organiser of the event and on the internet and guesstimates based on their age and appearance.

And they still got most of it wrong! How psychic can you be to get "you have 3 brothers?" "No", "Two then?" "No, I have two sisters" "Ah, I knew there was a number two in there!"

scotchfreeescapegoat · 14/10/2014 13:41

Sally Morgan, Anthony Edwards, all of them. Scum of the earth. right up there with Bernie Madoff as lying cheating souless fraudsters. Happy to see them all locked up.

but on an entertaining note...Sally morgan communicates with a dead man, who is alive and in the same room

DaddyBeer · 14/10/2014 14:20

As soon as I found out that Derren hated psychics, I hated them too.

poolomoomon · 14/10/2014 14:20

Oh this is why I love Derren Brown so very much. He loathes them too and in fact his last live show was basically trying to rubbish psychics/mediums and show you how they do what they do and how it's all trickery. He can do it, it's mentalism- no magic powers involved and he was showing the audience this. He's tried to invite Sally Morgan a few times to prove her 'powers' but she always refuses, obviously. She's a massive con artist, they all are. Disgraceful making money off the back of peoples grief.

DaddyBeer · 14/10/2014 14:34

It is terrible. My mum goes for this kind of thing, desperate to maintain some kind of link with parents she lost many years ago. I can understand it, but it's also a mutual relationship. You can't fool people who don't, on some level, wish to be fooled.

TheWholeOfTheSpoon · 14/10/2014 14:37

There's a psychic near me whose office burnt down a couple of weeks ago. You'd have thought they would have seen that coming.

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 14/10/2014 14:51

I enjoy watching Derren a Brown too but it's not very comforting to a bereaved person to point blank tell them psychic messages are a load of old crap.

Many people visit shows like Morgans as they are desperate for some crumbs of comfort. She offers that for money.

Not everyone really seeks the brutal truth or to have the unknown probed that's why religions exist and are so popular.

To my mind Sally is no worse or better than any vicar, priest Jewish or Muslim scholar.

They all make money out of persuading people things exist without proof.

Sweetpea01 · 14/10/2014 15:04

I always imagine that if I had a supernatural connection to the after life, that I would be more concerned about spreading the great news that there is in fact life after death. I would ask spirits everything I could about it and then let the world know which, if any, religion was correct.

Because really, when the spirit of Jim the local english teacher comes to chat to you - his only concern is to tell Mavis the lost keys are behind the cabinet?

Alas, I am an atheist and as such, will never be so 'gifted' Grin

AgaPanthers · 14/10/2014 15:06

Of course she is worse than a fucking vicar. If you want to hold a Christian funeral then you ASK the vicar. If you don't, then bury your mum in the woods or whatever suits you.

The vicar doesn't charge £30 a ticket and then claims to be talking to a dead person based on details gleaned from a quick Google News search before the show.

And you don't have to go to Sally Morgan for comfort, it's entertainment. It's put on in a theatre, and while there is a reasonable assumption that anyone in the theatre consents to being subject to her psychic act, it is NOT reasonable to rope in dead men picked out of newspapers.

"A spokesman for Sally Morgan Enterprises said: “We have spoken with Nicola - she isn’t ready to speak with Sally, however we are assisting her as best we can.

“We have made it known that we are available for her should she wish to contact us.

"We would like to confirm that for us this is a very private matter and one that we will only liaise with Nicola on.”"

So it's a private matter, but she was happy to speak about it in an auditorium full of random people who had no connection to the deceased man?!

I think using a tragedy like this to boost her own profile is pretty despicable.

Littledidsheknow · 14/10/2014 16:52

Utterly evil woman. I hope the tragic cyclist's girlfriend sues SM for all she's worth for the distress she has caused.
