To be really cross that GBBO Nancy is described everywhere as.. [title edited by MNHQ - spoiler alert!]

In the DM, every single article seems to be defining Great British Bake Off Winner Nancy, by her age.

Do people really think that your cooking ability declines with age? And 60 really? Why is it amazing that someone of 60 can cook better than people younger than her?

Cooking (or baking) is not age, sex, profession, class or anything else related. Skill is dependent on talent, practice, determination and a love of food!

OP posts:

Well, if Martha had won I expect it would have been "youngest GBBO Winner". Don't sweat the small stuff Smile

PiperIsOrange · 09/10/2014 17:04

I think it come down to the fact that modern baking with twist is seen as a younger generation thing.

My mum is 52, so cakes in her youth was a simple cake. Where as my sister who is 30 does amazing looking cakes.

moxon · 09/10/2014 17:04

Oh crap. I hadn't watched the final yet. And I've studiously been avoiding news sources the whoooole day long.
Aw well. You live and leven.
But yes, what the hell is that age-y headline all about?! Shocking, honestly!! Hmm

eosmum · 09/10/2014 17:06

I had it on player to watch tonight. Thanks a mil Angry

ethelb · 09/10/2014 17:07

They went on about how young Ruby was. They rarely mention the age of the men. I think it is a sexism thing more than directly ageist.

60 isn't really that old is it? She is still working age not some fuddy duddy.

ethelb · 09/10/2014 17:08

eosmum and moxon seriously?

cherrybombxo · 09/10/2014 17:08

Oh brilliant, thanks. I had it recorded to watch tonight.

eosmum · 09/10/2014 17:10

Yes seriously. My one free hour of the week, watching GBBO on catch up, there was no need to put the name in the title.

EvilRingahBitch · 09/10/2014 17:12

"Every single article in the DM" =/= "Everywhere"

I think other news sources have mentioned in passing the fact that Nancy is the oldest winner, but only the DM has gone large on it.

Ann Rowley who won the first series of Sewing Bee was 81 - now that probably does count as a distinguishing feature.

moxon · 09/10/2014 17:13

Yes. I'm glad it wasn't just me now feeling a bit robbed.
For the record: not all parents have the luxury of watching TV as it happens. DC you know.
Actually , can MNHQ change tye thread name please, and include the words 'spoiler warning!' so others don't also get miffed.

moxon · 09/10/2014 17:18

I've reported it and asked them to change the title. It may be too late for us, but there are obviously others!!!

ArabellaTarantella · 09/10/2014 17:19

Oh, OP - what a spoiler for people ! Didn't it even occur to you that some people might not have seen it yet? Very bad form !!

Notmymonkeys · 09/10/2014 17:20

Thanks for the spoiler. I'll not bother watching it now shall I?

PiperIsOrange · 09/10/2014 17:21

I haven't seen it yet, DS and I watch it together.

I'm not fussed who wins I just like watching the cooking parts.

DownByTheRiverside · 09/10/2014 17:22

It was on the BBC Breakfast news, without a spoiler warning. Perhaps you should avoid all media and chat forums in similar cases in the future Arabella?

moxon · 09/10/2014 17:23

Thanks MNHQ.

RiverTam · 09/10/2014 17:27

did people really think they'd get through the day without coming across who the winner was??? Stay off the internet if it means that much to you!

londonrach · 09/10/2014 17:27

Watched it with dh. He liked nancys cake but i loved luis s one. Only one we didnt like was richard. How green was that?

Neffi · 09/10/2014 17:29

I'm afraid that people who, for whatever reason, choose to watch something nearly 24 hours after it originally airs cannot expect others not to talk about the subject in an open forum.

DownByTheRiverside · 09/10/2014 17:29

Yup.
Stay off Twitter too.

Why pick on me DownBy - there's plenty of others saying 'spoiler', and HAVE avoided all media. And, actually, I watched it last night.

cherrybombxo · 09/10/2014 17:30

Neffi, people can talk about it but it's just poor form to not include a spoiler alert in the thread title. Not everyone can watch things as they air.

londonrach · 09/10/2014 17:31

Come on this isnt a spoiler its on every papers front page, bbc news.....

MustHaveMoreTea · 09/10/2014 17:32

Hmm. I think people easily manage to avoid all the obvious things in cases like this, River. Don't listen to the radio (although they are usually very good with spoiler warnings), don't switch on the tv, don't buy a newspaper. It isn't very difficult when you're reasonably busy with DCs anyway; you could even get away with telling office friends to keep their mouths shut for a bit when you're around. And TBF, MNetters usually refrain from being so blatant. I certainly would have thought someone posting about it would have the sense to be careful with the thread title.

DownByTheRiverside · 09/10/2014 17:36

Responded to the first post I saw complaining about the spoiler Arabella, got distracted by DS and didn't see that it was the last one of a number. Wasn't picking on you, but I'm a slow typist.
Apologies if you felt victimised.
