I seem to be the only person I know with decent knifes. Everyone else I know has awful blunt knifes that I find really dangerous. I just tried cutiing a lemon at my friends with a black Handel knife and both sides are the same sharpness.

I'm now watching her carve a pineapple with a bread knife! I've ended up in a and e through the blunt knifes my parents have. Seriously aibu to think most people don't even know how to own and use knifes?

Sorry I'm in rant mode after cutting myself, probably alone on this one

I agree - you are far more likely to hurt yourself with a blunt knife. At least when you get a cut with a sharp one its a far cleaner nick.

Get a knife sharpener. They are great!

Kitchen Devils are very good. I have one that I bought about 25 years ago and its still very sharp.

But one from the pound shop and ypu can't expect much!

mausmaus · 05/10/2014 09:03

yanbu
I have sharp knifes and a wet-stone.
I can't chop weg at my sis house her knifes are so blunt the toddler could play with them!

Contraryish · 05/10/2014 09:04

I agree. There's nothing worse than going into someone's kitchen, offering to help, being asked to chop something up and finding the knives couldn't cut through butter!

My mother-in-law is the worst, she keeps her knives deliberately blunt 'so she doesn't cut herself', but fails to realise that she is much more likely to cut herself with blunt knives than with sharp ones. I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but blunt knives are much more likely to slip, wherease proper sharp knives will cut through as intended!

AlpacaYourThings · 05/10/2014 09:05

My kitchen knives are so blunt I can't get through fruit or veg. I also use the bread knife

londonrach · 05/10/2014 09:06

Agree op to some extent. Its not the cheap but the blunt bit. I have excellent sharp knife for veg which was cheap. However never use a bread knife apart from bread. Separate topic but two of my veg knifes have reached the end of their life. How to get rid of them safely. At moment they sitting in draw waiting for me to decide. You cant bin them surely.

PiperIsOrange · 05/10/2014 09:07

I spend a lot on a single knife that has lasted 10 years, my mum on the other hand gets matching knifes in a set and a butter knife is better.

The same for 'childs' cutlery I don't see the point of them it makes it difficult for uses them

Where should I get my next knife block and set from?

ladygingina · 05/10/2014 09:16

I wouldn't buy a set, think that where many people go wrong. I would buy one decent knife, mine is Avalon or something from John lewis

A police station up the road had a 'blade bin'. I'm sure you could shuffle by in the dead of night and dispose of old kitchen knives there. I'm positive the bin men would thank you.

AlpacaYourThings · 05/10/2014 09:25

But I like the look of a knife set Sad

HoneyDragonMumshnet · 05/10/2014 09:27

Can I not just continue to use my knife sharpener?

mausmaus · 05/10/2014 09:28

our council says to wrap in newspaper and tie it tightly. put in the bin on day of collection.

SenatusPopulusqueRomanorum · 05/10/2014 09:28

YANBU.
Victorinox knives are cheap and very sharp.

LuisSuarezTeeth · 05/10/2014 09:31

You need this Alpaca

AuntieStella · 05/10/2014 09:32

I have quite nice kitchen knives. It's DH's job to keep them sharp.

They are often blunt, or at least less sharp than they should be. Perhaps I should just murder him messily?

mausmaus · 05/10/2014 09:33

yes to victorinox (famous swiss knifes)
also the more expensive ones from Ikea are good.

cheap knifes are factory finished and will not sharpen well.
this is something to do with the hardness of the metal which is achieved by many many layers of metal and a time consuming process of heating/hammering/cooling and repeat. which is why good knifes are expensive.

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 05/10/2014 09:34

Our knives are horribly sharp....DH thinks blunt are dangerous. I've cut myself on these razor sharp nightmares so many times I don't know any more.

Mouthfulofquiz · 05/10/2014 09:34

I couldn't agree more - I hate blunt knives, so always take my blade sharpener on self catering trips so that I can actually cut stuff. That said, I did cut my fingers really badly with a new chefs knife - but it was clean and healed very quickly and with minimal scars...

HamishBamish · 05/10/2014 09:35

I think it's less to do with the quality of the knives and more to do with keeping them sharp. I sharpen knives before each use which only takes seconds if you do it each time. I do agree you don't need lots of different knives though. A decent cook's knife, a bread knife and a smaller paring type knife is adequate for most things.

MaryWestmacott · 05/10/2014 09:37

Oh I hate blunt knives, they are far more likely to slip and cause accidental damage. You have to put much more force on so have less control. rubbish.

MIL also keeps blunt knives to stop her from cutting herself. She's the one who's cut herself several times.

LadySybilLikesCake · 05/10/2014 09:39

I told my sister off when I used her knives. They were blunt and the blades bent when you tried to use them Confused Soooo unsafe! Sharp, sturdy knives cut through things better so there's less of a risk of them slipping and cutting you. There's probably some guides on youtube on how to use them safely so you don't cut yourself.
