I seem to be the only person I know with decent knifes. Everyone else I know has awful blunt knifes that I find really dangerous. I just tried cutiing a lemon at my friends with a black Handel knife and both sides are the same sharpness.

I'm now watching her carve a pineapple with a bread knife! I've ended up in a and e through the blunt knifes my parents have. Seriously aibu to think most people don't even know how to own and use knifes?

yes I know, how common Shock

Stratter5 · 05/10/2014 23:04

I have Wusthof, they are fantastic. And I can't get worked up about my knife block being unhygienic, it protects the edge, and I thought wood was supposed to be naturally antibacterial? That's what they say about wooden chopping boards.

And cheep knives? Has anyone Tweeted this yet? Grin

I got some good ones from Lakeland. They were very reasonable- about £20 each. I know they aren't chefs knives but they don't bend and are well balanced. I look after them and use a steel often.
I did a knife skills cooking course and you're meant to use a steel every time you use the

Hmm, well this is a timely thread. Dh bought new sharp knives just last week. Dd put one in the dishwasher the wrong/right (depending on which way you look at it) way up this morning and I have stabbed myself in the hand.

It REALLY hurts. Angry

ToadToast · 05/10/2014 23:33

I got a sharp set...have never got through so many plasters! I even dropped one in my foot and it stood upright about an inch in, bloody horrible

Bunbaker · 06/10/2014 07:27

I never put good quality sharp knives in the dishwasher. The action of the water swishing round makes the knives clatter against other objects and blunts them.

I also never use glass "chopping" boards - again because it blunts the knife.

I made cardboard protective coverings for my knives so I can put them in the cutlery drawer without blunting them or cutting myself when getting them out.

I admit to being a bit precious about good quality cooks knives.

WorkingBling · 06/10/2014 08:05

My dsis had terrible knives. I bought her three good ones for her birthday! Grin

We got knives for our wedding andni sharpen them regularly. I love them.

I was a bit annoyed when making a salad at a friends house a while back and she passed me a bread knives for cutting the tomatoes saying that's the best. I wanted to say if she had proper shark knives she would realise that no, a bread knive is not the best. I use tomatoes to test the sharpness of my knives when sharpening them.

I do need a chefs knife as irritatingly my wedding set doesn't have one.

combust22 · 06/10/2014 08:11

I don't put my knives in the cutlery drawer. Far too dangerous. I have a tray on the worktop where each knife lies with a distance between them.

MustChooseASecondary · 06/10/2014 08:16

YANBU
Problem is, however good the quality if the knife, it will eventually need to be sharpened. And most people don't seem to know how. The ones I meet don't gave a whet stone and don't think they can learn either! It's a simple life skill.

AWombWithoutAFoof · 06/10/2014 09:05

Thanks for the sharpening tips. So, ceramic knives never need to be sharpened? Do they still stick to the magnetic knife thing? (Wondering if they have a metal core, am not completely daft.)

ouryve · 06/10/2014 09:11

I agree with you. I've been through loads of knives trying to find one that cut and sharpen well. Have ended up with a load of surprisingly inexpensive victorinox knives.

kelper · 06/10/2014 09:16

My dh uses my knives to cut bloody insulation
However he has two kitchen devil knives that he bought about 15 years ago and they are amazing.
(Also, this thread is waking my inner pedant up. One knife. Several KNIVES. Not knifes. Even my autocorrect realised that one!)

Longdistance · 06/10/2014 09:21

We have the Analon knives. They're brilliant. We have the knife block with steak knives x8. Then we've added to it over the years, just making it one big fuck off knife collection Hmm think dh is addicted to these knives, even though he doesn't cook weirdo

ouryve · 06/10/2014 09:28

I have some plastic sleeves I put on my sharp knives o they can go in a drawer, safely. I like to kee them out of the boys' sight, as they have a tendency to fiddle with stuff.

I don't think the plastic sleeves are made any more, but I've seen some magnetic ones which close securely around the blade.

My favourite little knife is a prestige knife I picked up for £1 25 years ago. The blade is pretty knackered, but I still have it, as it's perfect for cheese, of all things, while all my other knives just stick to it.

DorothyBastard · 06/10/2014 09:35

DH is a chef so we are swimming in lovely sharp Global knives. It's fantastic.

HappyAgainOneDay · 06/10/2014 09:59

Perlease, OP and maumaus. One knife and more knives.

Jux · 06/10/2014 10:32

I have a set of Prestige knives which were a wedding present to my parents so very old (1955!), in a wooden block which hangs on the wall. There are 4 long ones and 2 small ones - small ones long gone.

We also have a magnetic knife thing, with about 10 knives of various types/manufacturer/length/quality. We have 2 steels dating from our youth, one from the parental Prestige set. We also have several stones, as dh uses whetstones for sharpening garden tools, as well as knives.

So, we have lots. They all get used.

Jux · 06/10/2014 10:33

I would like a cleaver though. Grin

trixymalixy · 06/10/2014 12:19

oh kelper, my DH has used my bread knives and electic carving knife to cut insulation too. i was so annoyed with him as they are now blunt and i'm not sure how to sharpen serrated knives. anyone have any tips?

HoldenMcGroin · 06/10/2014 13:07

We use the windowsill as have countless occupants before us. The sill is quite worn. #cottagedweller

Why not just buy a wet stone, that would make far more sense.
