to think many benefits punish the prudent people that do the right thing

Aibu to think that many benefits are counter productive and reward people that don't do the right thing?

I mean why bother saving any money because I'd you have a five figure amount in the bank you won't get many benefits. But if you just waste all your money and have zero in the bank the government will give you money.

Also it seems better to rent rather than buy so the government will pay all of your housing costs if you loose your job.

I just think many of these reward people that we silly with money and it doesn't encourage people to behave responsibly.

Yawn. I went on benefits when dds dad left me. Clearly im not prudent enough. I rent because I cant afford a 30, 000 depisit. How am I supposed to save thay alone Hmm yabvu.

LuisSuarezTeeth · 04/10/2014 08:11

So lets give benefits to people who have lots of money and tell the irresponsible ones with no savings to fuck off?

Oh and of course the government ALWAYS covers your rent IN FULL, right.

Hmm
CoffeeBucks · 04/10/2014 08:12

YABU. I'd much rather have a five figure sum in the bank than have to rely on benefits, it's not fun.

LuisSuarezTeeth · 04/10/2014 08:12

You've not quite thought this through have you OP?

backbystealth · 04/10/2014 08:14

LeftRightCentre · 04/10/2014 08:14

Another political thread. Gah, can we get some food ones instead?

canweseethebunnies · 04/10/2014 08:15

Why don't you do the wrong thing, be crap with money, and go on benefits then?

FreeSpirit89 · 04/10/2014 08:16

I had to go on benefits when DS's dad left us when he was 8 weeks old. I had no where to live and was given a home bond (covers rent and deposit) only problem most land lords won't accept because they have the same attitude as you.

I'm trying to get back into work know, but it's hard with no support network. I have to rely solely on childcare.

I think maybe you should wind your neck in, and hope you never fall down on your luck and need a hand getting back up

Charitybelle · 04/10/2014 08:16

Bit early in the day to be starting fights lady?

Cornettoninja · 04/10/2014 08:17

If you had five figures in the bank why would you want to claim benefits? If you don't want people 'rewarded' why on earth would you be arguing that it's unfair that someone with the means to support themselves should get money on top? I don't think you've thought your position on the matter through.

Mortgage vs rent - well you can get help with interest payments on a mortgage for a certain period of time and you also have an asset that allows you to explore other financial options such as mortgage breaks, terms, remortgaged etc.

If you rent you don't have much wiggle room, it is what it is and if you can't pay it (even with benefit support) you have to move on with no asset to assist in the funding of a move. If you're on benefits and renting then the chances are in many areas of the country you've got more chance of pissing in the queens handbag than buying. Remember most benefits are top ups to low paid workers so it's a case of recognising the reality that our economy is fucked up. Not everyone had great earning potential but still work hard to support themselves as much as they can.

An excellent example is care work, you can work 12 hours a day seven days a week (and it's hard work physically and emotionally) but you will still struggle on £6.50 an hour.

Janethegirl · 04/10/2014 08:18

You may be right (for a very small number of people) but you are being very naive. Most people do not choose to go on benefits.

gamerchick · 04/10/2014 08:18

What's will all the relentless benefit threads atm. Is the government about to do something truly horrible and want to check if it's a vote winner or not?

It's freaking me out.

Andrewofgg · 04/10/2014 08:20

OP Do you enjoy being flamed? Fair enough if you do, each to their own, but you are asking for it.

Benefits are a safety net. They are there in case of proven need. There is room for argument about what constitutes need and how much they should be, but not about that basic principle . . . is there?

Cornettoninja · 04/10/2014 08:21

Oh and if it bothers you so much start doing the 'wrong' thing and piss away your assets and start watching the government cash roll in.

Reluctant to do that? Ask yourself why and acknowledge it's not a life aspiration to 99% people because it's shit.

backbystealth · 04/10/2014 08:22

And may I just add...

AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Thank you.

LuisSuarezTeeth · 04/10/2014 08:23

They already are gamer

gordyslovesheep · 04/10/2014 08:24

Cornettoninja · 04/10/2014 08:24

gamerchick, nah the Tory conference soundbites have just got those prone to frothing a bit worked up.

Distracts from the fact this is stirred up by a party whose leader sounds like he has phone sex with the queen - purrrrr.

ladygingina · 04/10/2014 08:25

Eek I didn't mean people choose them. I mean that it doesn't encourage people to save for a rainy day. That's all

OP posts:
thereturnofshoesy · 04/10/2014 08:25

yes cos everyone plans their life around benefits.....

on of the stupidest op's ever

LuisSuarezTeeth · 04/10/2014 08:27

I'm sure most people would save if they could, benefits or not.

Who the hell says, oh, I'll fritter away my spare £200 a month because I can just get benefits?

Missunreasonable · 04/10/2014 08:29

Mortgage vs rent - well you can get help with interest payments on a mortgage for a certain period of time and you also have an asset that allows you to explore other financial options such as mortgage breaks, terms, remortgaged etc.

The reality is that if a mortgage payer doesn't find work pretty rapid (and doesn't have sufficient savings) they don't have many options other than to try and sell before they get repossessed. A mortgage provider might let them pay interest only for a while which will help during the 9 months that the unemployed person is entitled to support with mortgage interest but they won't allow interest free long term. They also are very unlikely to allow somebody to remortgage if they don't have a job as that would be very irresponsible from a lending point of view.
Even people who are prudent and pay mortgage insurance in case if unemployment only get insurance payouts for a limited period of time.

I don't think the govt should give benefits to people who have huge amounts of savings but I do think they should give more help with mortgage interest to people who are unemployed, doing everything they can to secure work and risk losing their homes.

Andrewofgg · 04/10/2014 08:30

Got it.

OP wants a job on the Daily Hate Mail.

Read all about it: Teenagers getting pregnant to jump the housing queue . . .

I used to believe that rubbish. In my teens. I grew out of it. OP please do likewise.

Rebecca2014 · 04/10/2014 08:36

I am a single mother, I did not set out to become a single mother but yes lets cut all the benefits and leave women like me struggling so the hard working tax payers feel better about themselves! I used to think the same as you, till my marriage started crumbling and I knew I be on the benefit line.

It is hard to save on benefits too so shut it.
