Basic cleaning question...

PoppySeed2014 · 03/10/2014 21:42

It occurred to me today that our cleaner uses the same floor moo for the bathrooms, kitchen and downstairs hard floors. And I have no idea if she uses desperate cloths for the bathrooms.

Disclaimer - I am really crap at cleaning and have always had a cleaner. Please don't flame me for that.

My cleaner buys cleaning products and I pay her back. And no realise she hasn't bought new cloths since she's worked for me - 5 years or so...

Aibu to be a bit worried? To be fair, no one has been ill and everything looks clean...

What's the regime for cleaning cloths? When I've cleaned on my own (rarely) I've used disposible detol wipes.

I'm rubbish at this grown up stuff. Sorry for asking such crap questions...

Oh, and my cleaned has very little English, so trying to ask her about it today was useless. She just looked baffled. She is really lovely, trustworthy and kind. I'm just not sure how hygienic she's being (definitely the sand mop god bathroom and kitchen floors)

"Desperate" cloths = separate cloths...

FFS. Full of typos. Sorry. It's late. I've probably got early symptoms of botulism or something!

Lol!!! Throw out the old cloths and leave packets of new ones.

londonrach · 03/10/2014 21:47

Prefer desperate cloths if not changed in 5 years... Sorry op but yuk.... [ grin]. Cleaner needs new. Some of mine can be washed but alot get thrown away depending on job.... I mean you wouldnt want a cloth that cleaned the toilet clean the kitchen...

PiperIsOrange · 03/10/2014 21:47

I'm rather anal about cleaning.

All my cloths are colour coded, and I don't use the kitchen moo in the bathroom.

I'm also a hospital cleaner, so it's drummed into me not to cross contaminate.

PoppySeed2014 · 03/10/2014 21:48

Yes, but I vaguely remember Kim and Aggie having colour coded cloths...? I don't love the idea of DH's wee being wiped off the loo with the same cloth that buffs the kitchen taps Confused

PiperIsOrange · 03/10/2014 21:48

I don't rate disposable detail wipes either.

londonrach · 03/10/2014 21:48

Piper,.. Kitchen moo. Love autocorrect tonight. Whats the cow doing in your kitchen. Grin

ThermoLobster · 03/10/2014 21:49

What is a moo?
My cloths get washed on a hot wash once a week and replaced regularly. And I am a slattern...

LadyHamiltonsPussy · 03/10/2014 21:49

Surely 5yr old cloths would stink? She must be boiling them or washing them at least?

PoppySeed2014 · 03/10/2014 21:49

Right. So new cloths, colour coded.

Ok, can't get much more embarrassing - what sort of cloths? Jcloths? Microfibre? Um, Tesco's own?

(I have NO idea)

Pipbin · 03/10/2014 21:49

I agree with Spag. Throw the cloths out and buy new. Do that once a month or so and she'll soon get the message.

PoppySeed2014 · 03/10/2014 21:51

She doesn't use the washing machine. I think the cloths dry in her cupboard. I never open that cupboard.

But none of us are dead or ill. So that's good.

PoppySeed2014 · 03/10/2014 21:52

Ok. Thanks guys. How did you learn this stuff? How did I not?

I'm pretty good at other domestic stuff. I can service the car, garden, cook, do laundry. Just never really cleaned.

PoppySeed2014 · 03/10/2014 21:53

I'm going to sleep now. I look forward to helpful tips and withering despair in the morning Grin

But none of us are dead or ill.

Which goes to show how unnecessarily wound up some people get about things like toilet brushes.

londonrach · 03/10/2014 21:53

Depends on job poppy. ( its fun standing in the cleaning section looking at them all).

ChippingInLatteLover · 03/10/2014 21:53

I use disposable cloths. One for the kitchen and a new one for the bathroom. The kitchen one gets used once for the kitchen then washed out & dried then used again for 'dirty jobs' (outside window ledges, spills etc) and thrown out, the bathroom one gets used once and thrown out.

However, we had 'kitchen cloths' and 'bathroom cloths' when I grew up and they were all used and washed again and again and we lived to tell the tale.

But using the same cloth for both isn't acceptable, so I'd make sure she isn't.

I wouldn't use the same mop either. I have a steam mop and have different cloths for each (but I am so in love with my new bathroom floor tiles they're currently being hand washed Grin)

I get these for the toilet only.

Then micofibre every where else, apart from the TV stand which has a shammy cloth as it's black glass. Then I also have specific cloths for the windows.
The kitchen has it's own cloths as well.

God I need to get a life.

londonrach · 03/10/2014 21:58

Poppy...did i read somewhere that the healthiest adults are those exposed to bacteria as kids so proof you a fab mum.... Grin. Dont worry, sleep, and mn will sort your cleaning our for you by the morning.... I like the microfibre clothes fir windows. Wilkinson wipes (50p per pack and they do lavendar) fir the toilet....but other mnetters will like different things.

Happypiglet · 03/10/2014 21:59

I use micro fibre and wash between uses...but I use j cloths for the toilets. So bathroom cloth is same is kitchen cloth but usually washed between each as I tend to do the rooms on different days. Only toilets get done with the j cloths.... Perfectly acceptable to wash the others IMO...

skylark2 · 03/10/2014 22:02

I only own one moo - it does all the moo-type of floors (which doesn't include the bathroom but does include the downstairs loo). I don't use it to mop anything food goes on, so I really don't see the issue. We put the head through the washing machine on a regular basis.

The kitchen sink is cleaned with the kitchen washing up cloths because they're there. Similarly the bathroom cleaning cloth lives in the bathroom. I say cloths but we tend to use those foam kitchen scrubbers with the rough dark green bit on the back and bin them as soon as they're icky. The loo only gets cleaned with the loo brush - if I use a cloth on it, it's always an old one of the foam things and I bin it afterwards.

PiperIsOrange · 03/10/2014 22:05

AUTO CORRECT ITS MOP. bloody moo

PumpkinsMummy · 03/10/2014 22:05

I use jay cloths in the bathroom as I do one go around with them then bin them. Generally a sponge/scourer for kitchen surfaces (changed weekly), microfibre for stainless steel appliances/taps (washed weekly) and I have a steam mop for the hard floors throughout which gets boil washed after each use. If the floors are quite grubby then I will use one cloth for the kitchen and a fresh one for the lounge (v, small house).

I don't believe that the same cloths would survive 5 years wear and tear if they are being used for a proper clean each time so suspect your cleaner will be replacing herself. You HAVE to go into the cupboard and report back.

bonzo77 · 03/10/2014 22:06

My cleaner likes ripped up old towels. We've got about a dozen of such cloths. Not sure what gets used where, but she uses all of them
Each week, and then I wash them at 90 degrees. One mop does for all hard floors, kitchen and bathroom. I get a new head for it when she asks, probably every year or so.
