Basic cleaning question...

PoppySeed2014 · 03/10/2014 21:42

It occurred to me today that our cleaner uses the same floor moo for the bathrooms, kitchen and downstairs hard floors. And I have no idea if she uses desperate cloths for the bathrooms.

Disclaimer - I am really crap at cleaning and have always had a cleaner. Please don't flame me for that.

My cleaner buys cleaning products and I pay her back. And no realise she hasn't bought new cloths since she's worked for me - 5 years or so...

Aibu to be a bit worried? To be fair, no one has been ill and everything looks clean...

What's the regime for cleaning cloths? When I've cleaned on my own (rarely) I've used disposible detol wipes.

I'm rubbish at this grown up stuff. Sorry for asking such crap questions...

Oh, and my cleaned has very little English, so trying to ask her about it today was useless. She just looked baffled. She is really lovely, trustworthy and kind. I'm just not sure how hygienic she's being (definitely the sand mop god bathroom and kitchen floors)

My bathroom is off the kitchen so I do a microfibre cloth and start in the kitchen, wipe surfaces down, cupboard doors, sink, the bathroom sink, taps and shower, bath then loo and the cloth then goes on a boil wash.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 03/10/2014 22:14

I use different cloths in the bathrooms but the same mop throughout.

Minikievs · 03/10/2014 22:15

I only have one moo for all the hard floors.
It would never occur to me to have different moos for the bathroom and kitchen.

ceres · 03/10/2014 22:23

cloths get used and then put in the wash on 60.

same for the mop heads - use them and wash them.

the cloths and mop heads are not colour coded. so I could use the same cloth to clean the kitchen one day and the bathroom another day....but it will have been washed in between uses.

shaska · 03/10/2014 22:24

I can't imagine a cloth lasting for five years. Maybe it's possible. It can't be possible. It can't be.

We have a 'bathroom sponge' that lives in the bathroom, is used in the bathroom, and is replaced when I don't like the look of it anymore. I don't do inside the toilet with it, that's the toilet brush. I am unashamedly pro toilet-brush. Also unashamedly pro-bleach, in the bathroom and every now and then in the kitchen sink.

Everywhere else in the house is the same assortment of e-cloths and some sponges. Sponges get biffed when I go 'ick' at them and e-cloths get washed, until the day they come out of the wash and I go 'ick' at them and then they get binned too.

Also this 'ick' process is, I suddenly realise, my sole domain. DH never does it! I can't decide if this is a failing on his part or whether if there were two people doing it everything would fall into chaos. I am the dictator of cloth cleanliness, and maybe that's ok.

BlueBrightBlue · 03/10/2014 22:35

I am not all that great at cleaning but get a new mop head ( £1.50) every 6 months or so. A stale probably costs about the same.
I find old vests make the best dusters; loathe those silly yellow ones.
Not a fan of micro fibre cloths; they scarify and loosen dirt but don't remove it IYKWIM.
Soda crystal and sugar sop are the best surface cleaners you can buy. I don't buy pre mixed squirty bottles as they are not worth the money.

Ohhel said what I was thinking - the mop is used with disinfectant so surely not an issue? Or have I been fooling myself all these years? Curious about these mop heads that go in washing machine though - what sort of mops are we talking about?

I just cheap j-cloth type things for toilet and clean all at once then throw out. Then a particular microfibre cloth damp for dusting, and two others for any really dirty jobs such as cleaning the slide! Bathroom sponge for sinks, showers and bath. Only thing is that DH occasionally cleans and has habit of just using first cloth he finds so I can never be sure what he has used to clean the toilets as he wont tell me- I try not to think about it.

Bathsheba · 03/10/2014 23:04

My cleaner leaves me all the cloths. I pop them in the washing machine, dry them and leave them for her to use the next week.

To be completely hones t I would consider any worries after that to be slightly ott.

thatsn0tmyname · 03/10/2014 23:10

For the bathroom I use tesco value J cloths (old name for blue and white disposable). They're only 35p for 10. I rip one in half, clean the loo then bin. Use the other half to clean the sink and surround, bath and surround then floor and bin.

RJnomore · 03/10/2014 23:14

I have a steam mop, is it safe to use in all rooms?

Bulbasaur · 03/10/2014 23:19

I just use Clorox wipes and Pledge Grab its. When you're done you throw them away. Always a clean cloth for a new surface.

I'm too lazy for washable cloths

Squtternutbaush · 03/10/2014 23:34

I have 6 Microfibre cloths that I've had for 3 years.

I take a fresh one each day for the kitchen, every third day I use a fresh one in the bathroom and once a week I use one to dust surfaces then they get lobbed in the nappy wash and reused.

I've never given it a thought about what I'm using where as long as they've been cleaned between uses I dont see the issue although now I am going to treat myself to new cloths tomorrow :o

Oh and I also use an old terry nappy to wash the kitchen/bathroom/downstairs flooring generally in one go.

StepDoor · 04/10/2014 01:15

I have separate cloths for cleaning the loo, the sinks, bath, and obviously the kitchen.

Kitchen one is changed every couple of weeks and bathroom one lasts at least a year I think.

StepDoor · 04/10/2014 01:17

I use the same mop, but always leave the bathroom to mop right to the end.

EBearhug · 04/10/2014 01:20

We had a cleaner at work who used one cloth. Loos, kitchen areas, desks, just the one cloth.

(He got sacked.)

I have separate clothes for the loo, for the rest of the bathroom, for the kitchen, and then a load for general use. The hard floors get a vacuum and a steam mop in theory, more likely they don't get anything. I ought to clean the windows this weekend, really...

clary · 04/10/2014 01:38

Yeah like others I use a range of cloths for cleaning, old flannels, ripped up jogging trousers (they are the best), even old towelling socks.

They are used for whatever as after each use they go into a very hot wash, along with the steam mop (or moo) mop-head thingy.

In the end they become ragged (or are used for a really filthy job) and have to be chucked, at which point I start eyeing up DS2's almost-outgrown and tatty joggers with a speculative eye...

we are all pretty healthy here

TheLovelyBoots · 04/10/2014 07:25

My old cleaner, who worked in a care home and was trained in health and safety - used different mops for the bathroom & kitchen. I found it bonkers, and discontinued this when she left.

Now we have one mop.

We have lots of (not color-coded) rags, for bathroom and non-bathroom use alike; they all go in a hot wash after use with a bit of bleach.

TheLovelyBoots · 04/10/2014 07:26

I've never washed a mop head, that's a pretty good idea.

Shonajay · 04/10/2014 07:36

She must be replacing them herself. A pack of j cloths is only like 25p from morrisons. I use cotton cloth ones, and bleach them and chuck em in the wash.

TheLovelyBoots · 04/10/2014 07:37

When a mop head is ready to be chucked, you can use it to empty the loos/soak with vinegar. These two things coincide nicely.

formerbabe · 04/10/2014 07:40

I buy the cheapest jay cloths I can find and use separate ones for kitchen and bathroom....I bin them after a day. I clean my bathroom floor with a cloth which I chuck afterwards. I wouldn't use the kitchen mop for the bathroom... It's grim.

combust22 · 04/10/2014 07:43

I use cotton cloths, I wash them in the washing machine as I go. One for every time I use clean the bathroom and two or three fresh ones a day for the kitchen.
I don't like j-cloths, they are not very absorbent.
