To be really, really disappointed that i tunes and the music icon on my i phone is frozen. Can anyone help?

I don't usually use i tunes but tonight, because I am trying to get fit lose a ton of post pregnancy weight I was downloading some tunes onto my i phone. Well, I thought I was, nothing seems to have happened.

When I tap the icon that says 'music' I can see a list of songs but the screen is totally frozen.

The same happens when I tap on i tunes. It has been saying that 17 songs have been downloading for hours.

Does anyone have any ideas about what I can do to fix this?

Double click the home (round) button and it'll show all the apps you've recently used. Swipe the iTunes up. This closes the app down. Now press the home button once to return it to normal. Reopen iTunes and see if it works. If not, turn it off and on again.

That's as far as my technical skills go! (But it always seems to work for me)
