AIBU?

Share your dilemmas and get honest opinions from other Mumsnetters.

To think that far too many MN'ers see this AIBU section as some sort of competition to see who can be the rudest to the OP?

Been on and off MN for about 5 years now.

Can never seem to stay on it for longer than a few months because the insults and disrespect shown to some OP's, some of whom have genuine questions and concerns, irritates me so much.

Some of the comments are so blunt and inconsiderate is unreal.

'You've GOT to be joking' - why? Because you don't agree with what the OP is saying?

It seems like folk like to hide behind their keyboards and use this as a way to mouth off.

I'm quite sure some the hardcore regulars will now be telling me to go and use NetMums as apparently they aren't as........blunt shall we say?

Odfod.

Nah, just kidding, I agree.

OraProNobis · 02/10/2014 20:56

There's a huge cross section here and as such it very well represents real life - unlike some sugar coated censored to buggery fake place full of bunny wabbits and wainbows absolutely brimming with passive aggression. I dunno - I prefer this but, you know, if you don't like it here surely you know what to do?

ClashCityRocker · 02/10/2014 20:57

To be fair, it's a hell of a lot nice site if you hide AIBU.

lomega · 02/10/2014 20:57

People tend to grow huge balls on the internet - sadly this means you get a lot of rudeness that wouldn't be there in real life! I think it's because you can't see the other person's reaction face to face. It can be quite hard to insert tone into text correctly as well.

I tend to lurk and post very occasionally and have only recently discovered MN so I'm not sure I am qualified to post here but I guess I'm just used to the internet being quite bitchy and full of people saying shit they'd never dare to in reality.

ClashCityRocker · 02/10/2014 20:57

Nicer.

But I like seeing the different opinions.

BluePop · 02/10/2014 21:00

Funny you should say that.
I was about to post on here that AIBU isn't actually the best place for balanced advice.
A month or so ago I saw some poster get an absolute barrage of abuse about a perfectly valid question - 9/10 the poster has a feeling their thoughts aren't entirely rational in the first place, so it's hardly justified to lay into someone. And some of the language used is just hideous.
I think some people hide behind usernames to single out and bully strangers because they know they wouldn't get away with it IRL and they have an insatiable superiority complex.

wooooosualsuspect · 02/10/2014 21:00

yeah just blame the regulars because no newbie ever said anything bad.

plentyavino · 02/10/2014 21:01

Never blamed the regulars - I said I expect them to tell me to use NetMums instead.

wooooosualsuspect · 02/10/2014 21:06

You name changed to start this thread.

Are you not hiding behind a user name to stir?

pogoyogo · 02/10/2014 21:07

You are right and it does seem to have gotten worse this last year or so.

Mintyy · 02/10/2014 21:09

Honestly, op, just hide Aibu.

It can be quite entertaining, but only if you are in the right frame of mind.

If you are in the right frame of mind you can tell the arseholes to fuck off, if not you might feel upset/frustrated/disgusted by it.

But if you hide the whole Topic then a whole new and slightly more polite world of Mumsnet will open up to you!

plentyavino · 02/10/2014 21:10

I name changed because I couldn't remember my previous log on details since I've not been on here for about a year. I very rarely post but felt I had to voice my opinion after reading some recent threads.

Not stirring, just making an observation. Some of the tirades of abuse OP's get in this section is ridiculous and unnecessary.

OP posts:
BIWI · 02/10/2014 21:10

Don't blame regulars. That's a very, very tiresome and wearing argument.

plentyavino · 02/10/2014 21:13

Please read the thread properly. I did not blame regulars - I said I now fully expect them to tell me to use NetMums.

OP posts:
Flipflops7 · 02/10/2014 21:14

YANBU, I like the differences of opinion and a good debate but not personal insults and swearing, or knee-jerk reactions.

BIWI · 02/10/2014 21:14

I'm quite sure some the hardcore regulars will now be telling me to go and use NetMums as apparently they aren't as........blunt shall we say?

The inference here being that 'hardcore regulars' will be defending AIBU ...

PacificDogwood · 02/10/2014 21:17

YANBU.
It is entirely possible to vehemently disagree with somebody, and not be rude or insulting.

AnyFucker · 02/10/2014 21:22

why do you keep coming back if you hate it so much

genuine question

Mintyy · 02/10/2014 21:25

C'mon now hardcore regs, be nice. Op might not realise that Mumsnet is not just AIBU.

HoneyDragonMumshnet · 02/10/2014 21:25

Fuck you all asshats and the scrotums you rode in on. Especially you op. Ha!

Hi Ho, gonads awaaaaaaaay!

BeCool · 02/10/2014 21:26

It is completely possible to use MN and avoid AIBU entirely - I usually do these days (this popped up via Active). We are all free to make choices.

GilesGirl · 02/10/2014 21:27

But that's why I love Mumsnet and AIBU in particular!

The "tell it like it is" attitude.

Perhaps you would be happier at Netmums.

And I am not a regular, I don't think. I've only been here a few weeks. I think. I can't remember when I registered.

plentyavino · 02/10/2014 21:27

Please don't put words in my mouth. I never said I hated it. Sometimes, most of the time recently, the barrages of abuse directed towards some OP's irritates the hell out of me.

OP posts:
wooooosualsuspect · 02/10/2014 21:27

MN is mainly AIBU tbh.

PacificDogwood · 02/10/2014 21:30

I think AIBU is a bit of a Marmite taste - love it/loathe it.
Easy to avoid.

I think Honeydragon gets the prize for the best abuse on this thread. So far.

Hide the topic, plenty. Solved.
