Pausing - you can use it online

PausingFlatly · 02/10/2014 16:13

So again we're back to, only stores which have signed up to the scheme in order to accept it online, and then there'll be a delivery charge.

As opposed to giving my neighbour cash when she helps me out.

PausingFlatly · 02/10/2014 16:14

Let's face it, the purpose of this scheme is not to make my life easier, or to enable me to buy more fruit and veg with my money, is it?

So what is the purpose? WRT me, a disabled person?

PausingFlatly · 02/10/2014 16:15

(Neighbour cash to pay for shopping, I mean, not as employment.)

Nancy66 · 02/10/2014 16:17

as far as I can see it's intended for certain claimants - ones, I imagine, who will be recommended for the card by social workers, local authorities etc as they are incapable of budgeting and prioritising.

Siarie · 02/10/2014 16:19

I don't think anyone is under the illusion that the scheme is to help those who are being funded by public money. It's clearly not and its to please voters as all policies proposed before elections are.

Numanoid · 02/10/2014 16:51

I will sign, it's an awful idea.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 02/10/2014 17:32

Y,Y, to Sassy. People have heard/read it from the horses mouth, now.
As you say basically say DWP staff are only following rules from the powers that be. Just because you work for them don't mean you agree with their policies.

ladygingina · 02/10/2014 17:43

Dawndonnaagain · 02/10/2014 18:18

Nancy if you read the leaflet, people with disabilities are mentioned on it. I even highlighted the relevant points.

lacksdirection · 02/10/2014 18:30

It's a ridiculous idea and unlikely to be particularly successful.
Added to that, what happens to the young people on JSA who are living with parents but haven't yet found work.
They are expected to contribute to the household, hence parents who receive HB find their HB reduced when their adult DC leave full time education.
They won't need to buy much food or pay bills on their card but will be expected to contribute to the household. How does this work?
Will shops be able to use multiple cards to pay for food and bills?

As an aside, I have a friend who is on ESA for mobility problems who lives with her parents and she is currently very depressed. She spends her ESA on magazines and treats such as dvd's to watch because she is not very mobile at all and this is one of the few things that cheer her up every week.
I'm not sure individual circumstances will be taken into account in this way.

stubbornstains · 02/10/2014 18:35

Oh, there won't be a problem with how young people receive their benefits, lacksdirection. BECAUSE SOON THEY WON'T BE RECEIVING ANY. Yes, the Tories have just announced plans to stop benefits for 18-21 year olds after 6 months.....

www.theguardian.com/society/2014/sep/28/david-cameron-welfare-youth-unemployment

fluffyraggies · 02/10/2014 18:55

Just how far are they going to go to win votes from the far right? Thisis getting crazy. Soon they'll be announcing the plan to just chop the heads off the poor if they get voted in again.

Smilesandpiles · 02/10/2014 19:21

Were are all these jobs, that people are going to need, going to come from?

There's no sense in making all these cuts under the illusion that people are going to find work, because there's still bugger all out there.

stubbornstains · 02/10/2014 19:23

Well, they're talking about creating a whole load of modern apprenticeships in call centres, for example. At £3.00 an hour. But I'm sure employers won't take advantage of them at the expense of properly paid roles, oh no no no.....Hmm Angry

Smilesandpiles · 02/10/2014 19:25

So people will be claiming more benefits to make for the crap pay?

Er...that makes sense Hmm

stubbornstains · 02/10/2014 19:29

Yes, but large companies will make more profit. And then their shareholders Tory MPS will be happy. So you see (adopts David Cameron- I-am-going-to-talk-very-slowly-and- clearly-because-don't-you-see-you-are-so-very-very-stupid voice) this will be a beneficial thing in the end. Angry

lacksdirection · 02/10/2014 20:02

stubbornstains Fortunately, this particular friend is 25 but that doesn't help anyone who is 18 to 21 years old.
Despite those youngsters losing benefits after 6 months, I'll bet any HB the parents receive will still be adjusted to reflect the fact that there are adult dependents living in the home, even though those very adult dependents will then have absolutely no way of contributing to make up for the shortfall in HB or council tax support.

I'm gobsmacked at the article linked a little way up announcing stopping benefits to 18-21yos after 6months. Absolutely gobsmacked. How much worse is this going to get? This is where we need to mobilise voters, if there's anything to engage young people in the vote then it's surely got to be this? It's reminding me of Hitlers announcement that unemployment figures were 0. He had brought in compulsory conscription for everyone and so anyone not working was bunged in the army. Cameron wants to get rid of youth unemployment figures. "I know," says he, "if they aren't claiming benefits then they can't be recorded as unemployed!" Crime figures will rise, youth poverty will rise, there will be a rise in the numbers of homeless and those in hostels, those demotivated and disengaging with society. It will just drive a bigger wedge between the classes, the poverty gap is becoming a gaping chasm.

It's funny, I was reading that thread about Cameron's speech earlier and a Tory poster said that she didn't understand why all the lefties use bad language and bandy insults about rather than having a calm reasoned debate. It's because we are so fucking angry about the real poverty inflicting effect all these policies have. It's actually frightening, how disconnected the Right seem to be with real people. It's a dangerous game they're playing because I still cling to the belief that pushed far enough, the masses will turn and the Conservatives will find themselves very unpopular. Or at least that's what I pray will happen. It has to.

'The plan [to end JSA to 18-21 year olds after 6 months] was previously proposed by the Conservatives but rejected by the deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg.'

Just as a balance to all the derogatory things that get said about Nick Clegg.
