if you put up a "security" light you make sure it points down and not into others bedrooms

I moved into a new place a couple of months ago.

Now its getting light I keept wondering why I was waking up at 4.

Today I happened to be away and realized it was because of the people across the road and their security light when the guy leaves at 4 to go for work. Although it goes off after 10 seconds it points right in my bedroom window and isn't angled down.

Aibu to ask them to either dip it or remove it?

I'm sure if you explain nicely to them they'll be happy to move it. I have security lights and would be mortified if they were waking my neighbours so have adjusted them. Be prepared for them to say they don't know how, some people are incapable of the simplest things, and maybe offer to get someone to do it for them to save any arguments or bad feeling. These every day annoyances can easily cause bad feelings.

You should ask them nicely to reposition it. If not then I'm pretty sure your council (environmental health?) will act on your behalf. I think they treat it in a similar to noisy neighbours? Light pollution can be a similar sort of issue. And it's possible that I watch far too much daytime telly sometimes which is how I know this!!!!

Just ask them to reposition it, they probably don't realise

We had a similar issue, our neighbours had quite a substantial security light second sun that was angled towards our bedroom window. It would stay on for several minutes at a time, often much longer if they were on call (van based work).
They were initially a bit sniffy/disbelieving about it given we both had large rear gardens and a drive separating us, but we invited them round.

Poor people were really embarrassed. They apologised, admitted it was an industrial light and promptly changed it.
If I'm honest I miss it. Blush Everything seems so dark...

We have ours pointing out to our shed as it has been broken into twice. If someone complained I would move it down but I definitely wouldn't remove it I'm sorry.

YANBU. People should ensure that the arc of light only illuminates their land. Can be a right PITA.
