I can't help but cringe when I see it - anyone else? maybe people who scooter could help me be less judgemental Smile

I hate scooters in general and dread the day when my dc starts begging me to buy one for him.

Gruntfuttock · 26/09/2014 17:25

I wouldn't mind having a go on a scooter, but as an overweight 60 yr old it would look hysterically funny. I also get the urge to skip when I'm having a walk in the country sometimes Blush, but manage to control myself most of the time.

Gruntfuttock · 26/09/2014 17:38

That reminds me of a joke:-

"So I rang up a local building firm, I said 'I wanna a skip outside my house.' He said 'I'm not stopping you.'

PersonOfInterest · 26/09/2014 17:46

ha ha!! Mine has a 100kg weight limit Grunt (and no age limit that I know of)

Skipping is such a happy thing to do. If I saw you skipping Grunt I would join you. Let the miseries pushing their kids scooters rather than have a go think what they like.

throwingpebbles · 26/09/2014 17:51

Why is it analogous to skipping though? Surely its comparable to cycling, and no one thinks that is 'embarrassing' for adults. I'm using it to halve my commuting time, what is 'childish' about that?

holdyourown · 26/09/2014 18:02

to me it's analogous to skateboarding - ie a 'yoof' type thing, rather than cycling.
I have taken on board all comments on the thread thanks

gruntfuttock you should definitely skip Smile

ExpiredUserName · 26/09/2014 18:06

Just to add that you can go really fast on the scooter in the photo below. It's designed for adults. It has proper bike brakes.

holdyourown · 26/09/2014 18:07

Oddly expired I don't find rollerblading or rollerskating especially cringey, but grown ups on skateboards yes
I do realise this is my problem no-one elses and thankyou to all the scooterers who have posted I shall try to mend my judgemental ways Smile

I pass lots of people on them in the morning. Mostly men in suits with trainers and a back bag. I always guess that they are scooting to the train station and using it as free transport. Good on them!

Twiceover · 26/09/2014 18:40

I really want a scooter now. And some roller skates. Grin

Back in the day when skate boards were all the go,DN got one for Christmas.Visiting the family on Boxing day the board was on the path just outside the house and for some reason ......... God only knows what ......... In a split second I became convinced that I was an excellent, natural skateboarder, despite never being on one in my life,I said to DH 'Watch this. This is going to be fab' As we'd already rung the door bell,an assortment of nieces, nephews, in laws etc were waiting with bated breath to see my groovy moves.Of course I fell flat n my arse Blush and ended up in A and E with a #coccyx and concussion. Not quite a scooter story but pertinent to the general gist of the post. Grin

Memphisbelly · 26/09/2014 19:17

After the school drop off there is always an unintentional race between a group of parents racing down the hill from school, always makes me smile. Dh wants to get his own to go out with ds.

Ozne · 26/09/2014 19:25

I scoot shamelessly and happily on the school run. Definitely in the couldn't give a hoot what anyone else thinks camp, but I've never had a whiff of disapproval towards it in real life.

Honestly, I feel rather sad for those who cringe or judge. It may not be your personal cup of tea, but why begrudge some joyous and speedy fun to others?

neverputasockinatoaster · 26/09/2014 19:45

I can't wait until Tuesday..... DD and DS want to scoot to school instead of cycling. DD has dance club so I will need to bring her scooter home with DS.
I will be scooting home!
It is fun.
OP you are BU.
I want a scooter like expired

wonkyandproudish · 26/09/2014 22:34

Yanbu I find all scooters cringey. In fact even hearing the word said out loud sounds daft! gets a grip

whathaveiforgottentoday · 26/09/2014 22:43

I can do the school run in about 4 mins on my DD's scooter (which goes up to adult size) rather than 15 mins. I don't care whether anybody thinks its embarrassing as i'm going too fast to notice!
Sadly, she scoots back home after school and I have to be boring and walk. Perhaps I should buy my own scooter.

edwinbear · 26/09/2014 22:45

I'll tell you what is more embarrassing. Me running down the pavement trying to keep up with two scooting children, saggy boobs bouncing, pelvic floor failing, school bags flapping round my waist, shouting like a fish wife 'dd STOP, ds, LOOK WHERE YOU ARE GOING'. I want one.

throwingpebbles · 26/09/2014 23:11

edwin Grin are we the same person?

JeninOxford · 26/09/2014 23:22

I have two DDs (7 & 9). They each have a scooter that I can go on. When I go out with only one of them we always scoot and I borrow the other scooter. It's such fun. Even my mum has had a go when one of them wanted to walk. Granny on a scooter racing her DGD made a lot of people smile. DH is too heavy so he always has to walk .
So YABU (in my opinion).

Evenstar · 26/09/2014 23:24

I might just have ordered a scooter on Amazon, I love seeing all the mums scooting back from school on my way to work, it looks such fun! YABU Smile

ABowlofPetunias · 26/09/2014 23:45

Adults on scooters when they're not with children make me cringe.
Clearly judgemental of me on here but in RL I think most people would agree.
It's not because I'm "no fun" or think that adults should always be serious but somethings are for children, some things are for adults.
It's not like adults don't have any other vehicle choices!

DaveMccave · 27/09/2014 00:00

I've never seen one, I've heard it's more of a London thing. I did used to ride my daughters scooter if there was no one around after dropping her off at school. I'd just jump off it and stroll casually if I spotted anyone. I'd probably not have bothered to jump off if it wasn't pink and the size for 2-6 year old's. I'm totally asking for an adult sized one for christmas.
