I can't help but cringe when I see it - anyone else? maybe people who scooter could help me be less judgemental Smile

I used to walk 2.5mi each way to and from work to beat the traffic and I seriously considered getting a scooter to shorten the commute. I then moved away and have to get the train now so it's a non-issue but I think YABU. It looks a little bit funny but it's a cheap and easily transportable way of getting around which doubles as exercise - winner all around in my book.

pearpotter · 26/09/2014 15:05

I bought one in the early 00s but was too embarrassed to use it often. Plus I found it a lot more knackering than it looked, and I could only use one leg to scoot so one leg got quite painful.

Roller skates would be better for me! I do skate with the kids at roller discos sometimes.

ooerrmissus · 26/09/2014 15:07

Pah you're just jealous.

I find I get funny looks off adults but kids think it's brilliant. I have raced many a toddler round the park.

ooerrmissus · 26/09/2014 15:07

I do let them win. Mostly.

BeCool · 26/09/2014 15:08

I secretly desire to be a wicked roller skater & skate everywhere.

I'd just end up with a broken something though.

TheWholeOfTheSpoon · 26/09/2014 15:09

Try going to our local skatepark on a Saturday. Skating in your Dad jeans does not make you Tony Hawk. Grin

TinyTear · 26/09/2014 15:11

I want one! I have to run after my 2y8m old DD when she is whizzing on hers as I still hold the cord and don't let her loose by herself... If I had one myself it would be easier...

I am 11w pregnant and exhausted and don't really want to run!

GoldenGoat · 26/09/2014 15:23

I see a man taking his son to school every day, man walks, child scoots. Weds this week I had to go in late and saw the man returning the other way riding his son's scooter. Looked great fun and made me smile!

Username12345 · 26/09/2014 15:38

I can't help but cringe

Maybe it's from the stick up your jacksie, rather than seeing carefree, happy people scooting around.

Littlebluebutterflies · 26/09/2014 15:43

Ah but you see you are embarrassed, they are quite relaxed and having a good day.

It's your issue, not theirs.

Littlebluebutterflies · 26/09/2014 15:45

Btw you do realise that being embarrassed is a choice?

You can choose not to be embarrassed.

AmberLav · 26/09/2014 15:50

I confess to rolling my eyes when I see a grown up on a scooter, but I also do it for anyone over about 7 years, so I'm probably just a killjoy!

IckleBird · 26/09/2014 16:11

Yabu.
I would do it but its not practical for me as I live on top of a large steep hill.
I would get the scooters with the larger wheels though, looks like fun and a means of transport no different to a cycle bike.

Years ago I seen a grown man suited and booted I assume for work skateboarding at a good speed down a street.

HamishBamish · 26/09/2014 16:13

I do think it looks a bit odd, but I suspect that's because I don't see it often. My mum is getting one (she's 76!). She's very fit, but I do worry she might fall. However, the way I see it it's none of my business really.

londonrach · 26/09/2014 16:14

Why? We have a lady in her 80s where we are who scoots up and down to shops etc. she always gives me a huge smile and last time stopped and informed me its keeping her fit and still able to do her shopping. I think scooters should be banned for under 5s after seeing so any near misses at road junctions. It scares me every time.

Vintagejazz · 26/09/2014 16:19

I think they look silly too.

vintagenurse · 26/09/2014 16:21

My DH has a scooter for getting to the station and for getting from train station to his office in the City. Saves him loads of time and money and keeps him fit. He has an adult size one though (that he got from Decathlon in case any one is interested)

whois · 26/09/2014 16:23

Loads of people in london on them - makes a 15 min walk to the tube fun and quicker.

PersonOfInterest · 26/09/2014 16:32

First went on one as the only other option was to carry it a mile home.

Then I discovered it halved my journey time and was great fun. I mean, wow, the wind in my hair, firmer buttocks, what's not to like?

But cringe away, if you like, although maybe you should ask yourself what makes you cringe?

LikeTheShoes · 26/09/2014 16:40

I can't scoot, I just do not have enough coordination.

otherwise I would scoot home after school drop off, as it is I have to wheel the scooter like a boring grown up.

sometimes I have a practice at home, but I just cannot do it.

(I can Rollerblade though)

Subhuman · 26/09/2014 16:46

They might look silly, but it gets them somewhere quicker than walking and takes up less space than a bike so I'm sure they'll accept a few judgemental as they scoot past in the rush to work, enjoying themselves, saving time and getting exercise.

whataloadofoldshit · 26/09/2014 16:49

YANBU, it makes me cringe.

CooCooCachoo · 26/09/2014 17:02

I also think adults on scooters look silly, regardless of the health benefits.

DogCalledRudis · 26/09/2014 17:14

I used to rollerblade a lot, but where i live now, the roads are unsuitable. I love my scooter though.

throwingpebbles · 26/09/2014 17:16

Yabu. Why should it be any more embarrasing than an adult on a bike?
I'm just about to buy one for me! It will halve my journey time to work, and unlike a bike I can quickly fold it and stick it under my desk, so no need to worry about faffing around locking up bikes etc. So I don't really care what anyone thinks!
