to think no one should own land and ignore a sign saying private woods

Ok o will probably get flamed here.

But there is a badly managed woods near me with am old broken sign that say private woods. Aibu to collect a few broken branches for the wood burner? I know it is stealing, but this woods is overgrown and I'm thinking how unethical it is for anyone to own land.

Land used to all be free, until someone carved it all up to hoard for themselves. If land was still free now maybe we wouldn't have to all be working such stupid hours wasting our lives doing a job we don't like.

Just take the wood

ArsenicFaceCream · 26/09/2014 11:21

Magna Carta

BadLad · 26/09/2014 11:22

OP, I agree.

Does the name Magna Carter (sic) meaning nothing to any of you people?

Did she die in vain?

Two questions, OP:

  1. Do you own your own home (and you count as a home-owner even if you have a mortgage)?
  1. How do you know who the owner of the wood is based on an old broken sign, and what form are you sending off?
ArsenicFaceCream · 26/09/2014 11:27

If i'm now obliged to buy a boxset BadLad, i'm billing you for it Smile

mls3 · 26/09/2014 11:33

Yes I own my own home and if it was disused and in a state of bad repair I would have no issues with someone squatting.

Pantone363 · 26/09/2014 11:34

Just take the bloody wood. I take a rucksack out every time I walk the dog and collect kindling from the woods.

mls3 · 26/09/2014 11:35

Oh pant sounds like your a criminal who risks being shot on a daily basis ;)

Are you a freeman of the land, OP?

mls3 · 26/09/2014 11:37

Typical mumsnet people go loopy over a typo...

Arsenic, that line, which I've waited years and years to use, is Sid James in episode Twelve Angry Men in Hancock's Half Hour. A brilliant episode of an old but great comedy.

itsbetterthanabox · 26/09/2014 11:38

Take it. You are right op no one should own land.
Wtf poster who shot a dog Hmm

Igotafreegoattoo · 26/09/2014 11:39

It's kindling. Dead sticks. Of no inherent value to anybody.

At Xmas I shall be sure to tell all the yummy mummy Kirstie wannabes not to remove any holly/ivy from the woods anymore Wink

Igotafreegoattoo · 26/09/2014 11:40

And the WI pensioners who are frequently seen cutting mistletoe/berries etc for their wreaths.

ArsenicFaceCream · 26/09/2014 11:40

Oh I thought it was Hancock himself. DON'T tell me the episode, I want an excuse to buy the lot Wink

Bunbaker · 26/09/2014 11:42

"Wtf poster who shot a dog"

I can't find the post, but if I recall correctly it was worrying the sheep. Farmers are perfectly entitled to shoot dogs who do this. It isn't against the law.

ArsenicFaceCream · 26/09/2014 11:43

Oh yes OP that was us going completely loopy, we're nutters, we are.

If you are going to rely on something as major as the Magna Carta in your twig-hunt, it just seemed a good idea to spell it properly.

VSeth · 26/09/2014 11:43

What a great defence if caught stealing. Unethical to own property. Righyho off to get my Balaclava out.....

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 26/09/2014 11:44

I'm thinking how unethical it is for anyone to own land.

Why, OP? I take it you don't own any land, yet you feel it is ethical to take from others. Please explain.

At the moment, it appears to be only your opinion that the wooded area is mis-managed. Just because there is an 'old' sign (in your view) - that should make no difference, whatsoever.

We have a pretty large garden. I put out baskets of autumn fruit at the front of the house with a sign to tell people to help themselves.
HOWEVER - if someone were to come into my garden to start helping themselves that would be another matter entirely!

We have old fruit trees, various wildlife inhabiting our garden (which includes some old branches lying around - it encourages the insects and wildlife). If anyone were to come in to disturb that, I'd be absolutely livid. You have no right whatsoever to take from someone, just because you feel entitled to do so.

Landowner might be agreeable, if YOU ASK FIRST

Igotafreegoattoo · 26/09/2014 11:46

I get what the OP is saying. Others seem to be being wilfully obtuse.

It seems bloody unfair to take a large piece of nature, fence it off, stick up a sign, not look after it and refuse entry to the proles.

PausingFlatly · 26/09/2014 11:46

There's a huge difference between picking up a stick for your dog or one Christmas decoration, and taking enough to feed a woodburner.

The amounts don't compare - especially when multiplied up by the increasing number of woodburners.

mls3 · 26/09/2014 11:47

Why, OP? I take it you don't own any land, yet you feel it is ethical to take from others. Please ex

Why is it ethical to take the earths land from people? Who does the earth belong to?

OP posts:
PausingFlatly · 26/09/2014 11:47

Quite right to ask permission - hope they are agreeable.

Igotafreegoattoo · 26/09/2014 11:49

Locally we lost a lovely big wood and two fields that have been used for years by local families. Bought be a nameless overseas investor. Fenced off and left whilst waiting on planning. Three years ago! Local kids used the woods to cut through to school. Fence was torn down in one bit 48hrs after it was put up, woods still used by families and kids. Fuck the landowner.
