When it doesn't actually work any more.

I heard the rumours. Found fleas on my dogs on a weekend. So figured it always worked really well before i'll just use it this once. £25

Did it work? Did it fuck!

So today, a week and a bit later i go off to the vets and come out £47 lighter of pocket and armed with a packet of advocate.

It had better fucking work -i had to borrow the money to buy it as dp doesn't get paid til next week. I nearly cried when they said how much it was (to be fair i have two dogs but even so!)

The vets know frontline doesn't work . Loads of people complaining - so please explain to me why you still sell it

In fact why does anywhere still sell it. Its still £25 for a three pack for small dogs.

This particular bunch of fleas has cost me £75AngryConfusedHmm

Green frontline works for us, but not the blue one. Not even close. Hmm And Advocate is useless keeping harvest mites off when you're living in the countryside or near wheat fields etc. The green frontline does the trick though. Probably also depends on the cats?

SillyBlueHat · 26/09/2014 08:32

I've ordered Advantage on line. What about worming treatment? I liked frontline because it is in a pipette - I can't get a tablet in one of my cats.

BertieBotts · 26/09/2014 08:32

On people, I presume, Gordy, not cats! Don't use human products on animals.

OraProNobis · 26/09/2014 08:33

Whilst we're here does anyone else have a dog that's scratching wildly with no obvious reason? Currently the JRT appears not to have the fleas although the other one does (DH diagnosis - I'm not convinced!) but she's constantly scratching at her sides. There seems to be nothing there and no obvious sign on the skin - no flaking or redness or anything. Speaking to a lady at chemist yesterday and she said the unseasonable weather could be behind it and her vet told her lots of dogs have this at the moment. Any ideas anyone - and what can I do to help the poor thing?

Bakeoffcakes · 26/09/2014 08:38

I'm the same as you HoneyDragon. I've had dogs and cats for 21 years, I've never treated them for fleas and we've never had any problems. I do treat for worms and annual vaccinations.

murphys · 26/09/2014 08:45

Ora, my Lab scratches like that, with no visible signs of irritation. We have spent a fortune at the vets, even putting him in skin friendly food, cortisone treatment etc. The food made no difference (they thought it may be an allergy to previous food all of a sudden) and I didn't like him being on cortisone all the time.

I bought Mirracote which is a supplement to put over his good, which says it helps with shiny coat. This one has added zinc. Since starting him on that, he isn't scratching anymore.. I don't know what the magic potion is in there which is working, it just does.

The vets suggested it could be an allergy to food, grass, dustmites, fleas or tick bites. So he is treated for flea/ticks as well, so in honesty we really still don't know....

I am not in UK so I don't know if you can get Mirracote... I am sure you will have something like that though that if not that brand... I am wondering if zinc deficiency can cause this - but then again he was on the top of the range food, he shouldn't really have a deficiency should he...

he is back on his normal food he was on before the change, which is half the price as its not a "prescription diet" food that you get from the vets

murphys · 26/09/2014 08:46

food, not good.........Hmm

WhisperingPea · 26/09/2014 08:54

Another Stronghold household - excellent stuff. Have used it for years and years on a pair of ancient moggies. Normally get it from the vet; can I ask which online sites sell it? Ta.

hoobypickypicky · 26/09/2014 08:54

Stronghold (£6 vet prescription and the Stronghold purchased online) is the only thing which has worked here.

It's cost me a fortune for my own and the cats I rescue but is worth it. It actually works!

Regarding what Liara says, about Stronghold being available in pharmacies out in France - does anyone know where we'd stand legally and regarding customs/the mailing services wrt a friend buying in France and posting it on to me in the UK?

hoobypickypicky · 26/09/2014 08:59

WhisperingPea, I recently bought Stronghold from Pet Drugs Online. They were the cheapest at the time. Six cat pipettes cost £23.50, three large dog ones cost £16.50, three small dog ones £13.

It's worth shopping around as prices change. Whichever you choose, make sure you're buying from a UK company with a registered UK address. There is some dodgy stuff out there which is sold from abroad. At best it won't work, at worst it can be dangerous to your pet.

Petdrugsonline

gordyslovesheep · 26/09/2014 09:08

sorry that was in response to a post further us saying Nit lotion didn't work ...on people obviously Grin

fluffyraggies · 26/09/2014 09:40

Frontline Combo isn't prescription only Confused You can get online. Our vet recommended it. He also said use it every 4 weeks and the fleas wont come back. So far so good. (12 weeks in)

SALT

Apparently salt dries out the lava/eggs of fleas and helps halt the cycle. Normal household salt, liberally sprinkled around all the edges of the home (and around and behind any immovable furniture) against all skirting boards, on the edges of the stair carpet, any nooks and crannies. Left for 24 hours then hoovered up. Repeat as and when.

I spent a while on the internet for tips and the salt thing seems common knowledge in America. I gave it a go (with the FC) and our flea marathon during the summer finally ended.

DidoTheDodo · 26/09/2014 09:51

I use Advantage on the cat and indorex on the house. Seems to have stopped the fleas (hurrah). Previously I was using frontline but it didn't work. I am not a million miles from Medway either (thinks....) but I imagine that Medway fleas are probably really hard and have an attitude!

OraProNobis · 26/09/2014 10:37

Thank you murphys - appreciate the info and I'll certainly look into what's available here like that. Flowers

bakingtins · 26/09/2014 10:50

Frontline combo is prescription only. You can buy the blue frontline pipettes without prescription, for the green ones ( which have fipronil + Smethoprene) you need to either buy them from the vet where your pet is registered or ask for a written prescription, for which there is likely to be a charge. If you want something non prescription you'd be better off with advantage, which is the same flea killing ingredient as advocate without the wormer.

bakingtins · 26/09/2014 10:54

silly the only spot on wormer that covers both round and tapeworms is profender, but you need a prescription.

bakingtins · 26/09/2014 10:59

hooby it's illegal to buy prescription drugs overseas and import them. Your friend buying them legally and then sending them is a bit of a grey area. I doubt they would be that interested if it was a small amount for personal use but given that a written prescription is likely to be £5-10 and can cover 6-12m worth of flea treatment is it worth the risk?

Blondieminx · 26/09/2014 11:15

We had an infestation last summer despite being rigorously efficient with treating every 4 weeks with Frontline. Grim.

Blondie cat now has the Program anti flea injection every 6 months. I spray the house with Indorex twice a year too. So far so good!
