to wonder why they still sell frontline

When it doesn't actually work any more.

I heard the rumours. Found fleas on my dogs on a weekend. So figured it always worked really well before i'll just use it this once. £25

Did it work? Did it fuck!

So today, a week and a bit later i go off to the vets and come out £47 lighter of pocket and armed with a packet of advocate.

It had better fucking work -i had to borrow the money to buy it as dp doesn't get paid til next week. I nearly cried when they said how much it was (to be fair i have two dogs but even so!)

The vets know frontline doesn't work . Loads of people complaining - so please explain to me why you still sell it

In fact why does anywhere still sell it. Its still £25 for a three pack for small dogs.

This particular bunch of fleas has cost me £75AngryConfusedHmm

Frontline Combo (unlike Frontline spot on) is prescription only and does work. BUT it can take a couple of months for the fleas to disappear because of the life cycle. This year has been particularly bad for fleas, it is actually a bit late to use a flea treatment after the event - prevention is better than cure and so regular treatments of your animals year round is what works best. If you look at the ingredients in all the prescription flea treatments they are mostly the same, just sold under a different name and by different manufacturer. A lot of vets will offer a free flea treatment consultation rather than charge in an effort to combat this problem.

NoNoDontEatThatBloodyHellFFS · 25/09/2014 20:01

toboldlygo No it doesn't, I'm half a bottle in (Thursday night is my Friday night) and am mixing up my treatments sorry! Just as well I dose the little bastards sober Grin

I think the problem is that there's no single product that does absolutely everything. We now tend to ask clients what they are most concerned about preventing and take it from there - e.g

Worms - Milbemax
Fleas - Stronghold
Lungworm - Milbemax or Advocate
Ticks - Advantix

Frequency of use will also vary according to lifestyle, risk factors, combinations of products etc. so there is no easy answer.

Liara · 25/09/2014 20:19

Wow, I would be bankrupt if all these were prescription only here! I can pick up advantix, advantage, stronghold and frontline combo in any pharmacy and on the internet without a prescription here (France).

Thank goodness, they cost a fortune at the vet's!

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/09/2014 20:27

We don't use frontline anymore, our vet advised not to. Suggested Advocat or something else which they prescribed.

I read somewhere that 99.9% of fleas on all animals are cat fleas. Is that true?

I have found that fleas are a far rarer occurrence now we have no cats.

LEMmingaround · 25/09/2014 20:30

Is lungworm a new thing?

Just bought 4 pack of Advantage for £12 for our two moggies. The fleas have been dire!

Sleepytea · 25/09/2014 20:46

We used to use prescription frontline. It worked for the first 3 weeks of the month but by the fourth week I would end up with bites. Since we've switched to advantage I haven't been bitten.
I treat 4 weekly as a preventative because my cats are hunters and neighbours cats are not treated so lots of exposure in their environment.

Nobody mentioned Bob Martins yet?

YANBU - we're currently in the low hundreds on the same batch of fleas. Two and a half weeks in, as I say approx 125 down the swannee and today the poor JRT scratting herself nearly silly. Frontline Schmontline - never again. Fortunately I have family arriving from SA tomorrow and they're bringing something from there that is, apparently, the real deal. Prescriptions not required there for Veterinary medicines so I quite often get stuff sent over i.e. for ear drops for the infection prone Senior Doggy.
Last dog never ever had fleas but these two seem very susceptible. It's a proper pain in the arse!

TeWiSavesTheDay · 25/09/2014 20:56

Fuck knows what's going on here, I have always been religious about treating my pets, moved to this town - fleas. After each treatment (cat and house) it works for a few days/weeks then fleas back again. At our old house I gave up and paid a council pest control person to come in, "don't worry I've never had to come back!" he says. He has to come back.

When we moved it was better for a while, but this summer has been awful again.

I'm having to just live with it at the moment because the vacuum cleaner has packed up and that is a key item in my arsenal.

OraProNobis · 25/09/2014 21:15

I'm told that the late warmth and relative humidity is behind the current persistent outbreak TeWi - I suppose that'll do for a reason but it doesn't help does it. I really really don't want to have the house fumigated - does it really come to that in the end? Who does that - the council? Private company?

Morloth · 25/09/2014 21:30

We use Front line plus once a month. Never had a flea.

OraProNobis · 25/09/2014 21:35

May your good fortune continue unabated Morloth. Once upon a time we also had never had a flea!

MairyHinge · 25/09/2014 21:53

Frontline might not work so well for Fleas, but by God it's the best thing I've ever used for headlice.
Kills them & they don't come back.

I noticed this with my cats so switched to Advantage and it seems to be working fine. Don't buy from the vets as it will always be more expensive. I buy mine online from Nutrecare.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 25/09/2014 22:14

I've always used Frontline on my two cats and haven't seen any fleas but I've been bitten to smithereens this summer - never known anything like it! The only respite I had was when we went abroad for a week, as I didn't get any then Hmm. Thankfully DS seems to be immune and hasn't had any bites. Do you think it could be fleas? I've got mainly wooden flooring apart from the stairs and landing - how do I determine if fleas are in the house? If they are, what's the best way to treat them?

HoneyDragon · 25/09/2014 22:16

Am I the luckiest dog owner in the world? None of mine have ever had fleas Confused

HoneyDragon · 25/09/2014 22:17

I've never treated.

Fruityb · 25/09/2014 22:25

I always used frontline as a preventative but my indoor cat still managed to get them! The vet couldn't see any but I found 2. I indorexed the house, which is awesome stuff as it's killed the spiders in our house too, and the vet gave me broadline. He's flea free now and the house is treated. I've not seen any more.

So i'll not go back to frontline after using it religiously! I suppose it's still sold for the same reason the hideous Bob Martin products are. People will go for the cheaper option but it doesn't mean it works.

AcheyJakey · 25/09/2014 22:31

I had no idea frontline doesn't work!

WillowWoods · 25/09/2014 22:42

Frontline just didn't last as long this year(only 3 months) so had to top it up. Maybe it's weaker.
