To think babies are not 'seasonal'

Lonecatwithkitten · 22/09/2014 13:08

Just in Sainsburys in the Seasonal aisle today we have the first of the Christmas stock and formula and baby equipment.
Now there maybe more babies at certain times of the year, but humans are not seasonal breeders.

This just made me chuckle.

Sounds very odd, although I am pregnant... Wink

EmpireBiscuit · 22/09/2014 13:13

Ha ha - I think their baby event is about to start!

WiseGuysHighRise · 22/09/2014 13:14

Don't know, there seems to be a lot of October birthdays, almost like people get merry 9 months earlier... Grin

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 22/09/2014 13:41

A quick google shows that the ten most popular days for a birthday are all contained within a 16 day slot from Sept 9th to Sept 24.

Interesting they are weeks 37 to 38 of the year. (So 38 weeks after Xmas and New Year!)

FreeSpirit89 · 22/09/2014 13:41

HAHA!! This made me chuckle out load..

It wouldn't bother me, and im trying to get pregnant.

seasavage · 22/09/2014 13:50

September is a busy time (which links Christmas nicely to September anyway).
I've always known I was a party season accident.

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 22/09/2014 14:11

I saw that in Sainsburys today and it did make me wonder....

I think babies are an all-the-year-round thing myself.

AbbieHoffmansAfro · 22/09/2014 14:13

Babies don't appear evenly throughout the year though, do they?. February and September see big rises in the birthrate, I think.

Momagain1 · 22/09/2014 14:14

I saw a chart just yesterday about this. It was in the US, but probably applies here too. Winter/the holidays are definitely baby making season in the US, and probably most of the Northern Hemisphere christian countries. So September is birthing season, and this week is the high point.

I actually know loads of people born in September and October (including my mother and all of her siblings - busy gran and granddad!) and I always joke that the heating must have been out last winter Grin

CoteDAzur · 22/09/2014 14:28

Babies are actually quite seasonal. A disproportionately high number are born around May and September. (Because couples do it more often when on holiday in August and December?)

Lonecatwithkitten · 22/09/2014 14:39

I suppose my thought was that as a species we are not seasonal breeders, social factors have made us more seasonal.
Obviously your own sphere affects how you see things January and November are the most popular month for children in my daughter's year.

cathpip · 22/09/2014 14:49

November was particularly busy in the maternity unit when I had dc1 6 years ago, romantic valentine meals are long gone now!!!!

mrsnec · 22/09/2014 14:53

Well I'm 38 +5. My dm and dgm both have birthdays this week. Last year my dsil, dn and dss all had babies in October as did a few of my friends. It might be a uk thing though as I'm not in the UK at the moment and here I'm told people avoid getting pg during the winter because it's so uncomfortable to be heavily pregnant during the summer.

I didn't time it though and never would.

pootlebug · 22/09/2014 14:55

Is it because of all the people who are desperate for a September baby because they believe they'll do better at school?

Bulbasaur · 22/09/2014 15:02

A quick google shows that the ten most popular days for a birthday are all contained within a 16 day slot from Sept 9th to Sept 24.

Yep. I was the result of a very happy new year.

I'm glad I had my baby in early spring. There was hardly anyone at the hospital with me when I went into labor. It wasn't empty, but there were a handful of empty rooms so we got more attentive care from the floor nurses.

mrsnec · 22/09/2014 15:05

I do know someone though who did conceive both of hers at that time of year by choice though and her reason was so she could cover up not drinking by saying she'd given up booze for lent!

squoosh · 22/09/2014 15:06

Isn't there always a baby boom after a World Cup? I suppose with England's fortunes this summer that particular boom will not be forthcoming.

deakymom · 22/09/2014 18:51

well on tesco dot com website i looked up frozen vegetables and up popped baby milk dummies baby food etc i complained it was in poor taste they sent me this Blush and rang me to make sure i was "okay" Grin

ditavonteesed · 22/09/2014 18:58

I work in a maternity hospital and I can asure you that babies defiantly are seasonal, and right now is baby season. Grin

TiggyD · 22/09/2014 18:59

You don't want to eat an unripe one.

Chorister · 22/09/2014 20:04

Me and DB both have birthdays in this month. Along with my SIL, best friend, nephew, cousins son, friends son and a few others. It's birthdays all over the place till early February. It's birthday season for us!!

redexpat · 22/09/2014 20:12

If you live in scandanavia baby season is march - 9months after midsummer when no one can sleep gor the light. Thrres a mini season in september after xmas and new year.
