To be grossed out by Nicki Minaj's new video?

Re her Anaconda video. Oh my lord!!! To be fair I was more amused than grossed out so that's an unfair statement.

It's basically soft core porn (maybe a tad harsh) and the lyrics are just pure filth!!

Didn't know if anyone else had seen it?

But there is a strong argument that their choice harms the rest of us.

How?

No one is twisting a man's arm and making him objectify a woman or see her only as a sex object. I believe, just like women, men have self control and the ability to make a conscious decision about something.

Saying she's harming the rest of us is almost as bad as asking what she was wearing.

This is not a strawman, but merely an example of this argument being used. A man dating a woman was into bdsm play, but didn't tell him. She told him to stop, so he did. She asked him why, he said "because you said stop". She wanted him to keep going because that's what she was into. The point of this story is that the comments section were full of people saying she was endangering other women with this, because it might make men think that when a woman says stop, they don't mean it. But that thinking is flawed. It takes away responsibility, and puts the blame on the victim. Obviously it does not endanger other women, because any man worth his salt will stop when a woman says stop regardless of previous experiences.

What one woman does, is what woman does. It does not speak for all woman kind, it speaks for what she's personally doing at the moment.

Or are we to say that rap harms black people's image too?

All these statements say is that we still have a long way to go if people are still resorting to stereotyping and making sweeping generalizations based on one person's actions.

MrsMarcJacobs · 23/09/2014 03:13

Ugh - all the surgery she's had to look like that . Google a before and after of her butt.

Karsyn · 23/09/2014 03:19

i just watched it. hilarious (not in a good way but how can anyone take that seriously? Is that what passes for music now?

MidniteScribbler · 23/09/2014 03:33

The thing is, that when performers film this sort of thing, any talent they have gets lost. I actually really liked Gaga's music hearing it on the radio at the time, thought she was very talented musically, but then when I saw all of the carry on makes me roll my eyes and turns me right off her overall as a performer. If you can write a good song, sing well then I'll buy your music. If you feel it necessary to carry on like that, whether you are male or female, then any talent you have gets ignored by the overwhelming feeling of 'ick' when I see it. I liked the sound of the song Blurred Lines when I first heard it, but when the words became apparent, and the video clip was released it put me off. They could have written the same song, different words and classier clip and it would be a great song.

differentnameforthis · 23/09/2014 06:24

And we wont even go into the Gun's n Roses Lies album.

It's imperative that we remember most of the tracks on there are covers...

You can moan on about "how is this considered music?!" and that "back in my day..." bollocks (which makes you sound fucking bitter) You do realise that your whole diatribe made YOU sound fucking bitter, don't you? People were discussing it in an adult fashion until you posted.

people think it's okay to slag off a hard working accomplished individual because they think the fact she has a fake ass and the fact they personally don't like her songs makes her undeserving of respect She doesn't deserve my respect because she is sending out the message to girls & women that the only way to make it in this world is by stripping off & writing about sex. While simulating it, with anything that isn't moving.

And she is perpetuating the myth that that is all we are good for.

If she is as talented as you say, she wouldn't need to lose her clothes & hump the floor.

If you buy in to the notion that an overly pornified and sexualised society is damaging to young people, you have to criticise anyone who is perpetuating that, especially if they are doing it for their own enrichment...She may well be hard working and accomplished and have overcome terrible things, but that's not the aspect of herself that's the selling point, is it? Spot on!!

Feminism may have 'allowed' these women to make videos like this but how much of a 'choice' it really is, I don't know Feminism has created a huge choice, but yet, here we are, still stuck on the myth that women are only there for a fuck! And videos (and yes, artists) like this perpetuate that myth!

CarryOn90 · 23/09/2014 08:14

differentname bitter about what? Apart from being angry and slightly disappointed at the way people are ripping into her (which is reasonable and not really a bad thing)?

Surely feminism and gender equality is about having a choice? And you're saying she shouldn't be allowed to behave as she wishes (wear revealing clothes/sexy dancing) because she has a responsibility to the rest of us?

I can achieve my goals with or without sexy clothes and Nicki's behaviour does not affect my view of that.

CarryOn90 · 23/09/2014 08:15

She doesn't need to hump the floor, but she wants to and that is okay

McBear · 23/09/2014 08:28

She doesn't need to hump the floor but she wants to and that is okay.

If ever there was a sentence I didn't think I'd read!

I love her, she's clever with her lyrics, original and doesn't care what people think.

Her bum hasn't been confirmed as fake tho has it? It's just speculation?

Merrylegs · 23/09/2014 08:31

I think it's the insidious and ubiquitous nature of this kind of music thar's damaging. It's so mainstream, the staple fair of, for eg KISS FMs breakfast show which is played on school buses. It's not subversive or alternative or thrilling. It's just work-a-day nursery rhyme fodder for our young people.

mls3 · 23/09/2014 08:38

I think thevideo is boring, the guy she's stripping for looks like he's falling asleep

McBear · 23/09/2014 08:42

The guy she's stripping for is drake. Also a famous rapper...

Random1999 · 23/09/2014 08:50

As someone the same age as your children (15) I can honestly say i'm so so so sorry for what our generation listens too Blush I was lost for words when I saw said video, I mean, your arse isn't exactly THAT spectacular is it? O.O Hmm what I find more disturbing is my boyfriends nieces (7 and 9 nearly 10) were visiting and both stuck pillows down the back of there dresses and were prancing around going "I'm nicki minaj"... I fear more for the youngest of my generation....

differentnameforthis · 23/09/2014 09:53

She doesn't need to hump the floor, but she wants to and that is okay

Not when it is aimed at a certain audience & she is selling it as 'entertainment'! There are lots of things I like to do too (although I draw the line at humping the floor) but I wouldn't start charging people to watch me do it & label it "dancing"

differentnameforthis · 23/09/2014 09:54

CarryOn90 So you can rip into us, but we can't call YOU on your attitude & calling US fucking bitter?

Hmm
differentnameforthis · 23/09/2014 09:56

It's not sexy dancing though...come off it....

Please!! That is SO far removed from sexy dancing! Sexy dancing is supposed to be alluring, inviting, and to some, good & erotic to watch.

What she is doing in that video, isn't that!

I can achieve my goals with or without sexy clothes and Nicki's behaviour does not affect my view of that. NO, because you are a grown adult & a young child/adult finding their way & figuring out their belief systems.

differentnameforthis · 23/09/2014 09:56

& not a young child/adult finding their way & figuring out their belief systems.

BravePotato · 23/09/2014 10:12

I had a look to see what all the furore was about.

it did not bother me, neither did I think it was great, but not terrible. It is not very new either, it contains a reference to "Baby got back" (the "OMG look at her butt!"-bit)which must be, what, an early 90's song? Which in turn refers to the "me-so-horny" song (late 80s? back when I was young).

sort of like the way she flies the flag for big butts (why not).

Can't find it offensive.

Back in the late 80's when they did that song: "I want to fuck you in the ass", now that was shocking. To me. Long time ago. Was probably not allowed on the radio/tv in the UK though!

The song in the OP, like I say, is neither new nor the most shocking.

I did laugh at the poster who said she had to watch it three times (first "amused", then "shocked", then "discusted ", if you watch any video three times or more...well, you have to a emit that you like it really! And maybe like being disgusted Wink.

BravePotato · 23/09/2014 10:12

not "emit", admit! LOL

WyrdByrd · 24/09/2014 10:51

I've just come back to this having seen the thread yesterday but only just got round to watching the video.

I'm honestly not sure what to think. As far as the video itself goes I found all the 'motherf*cking skinny bitches' stuff the most offensive part - and I say that as someone whose backside is probably naturally bigger than Minaj's! The rest of it was pretty laughable, although I don't dislike some of her sift which is undeniably catchy.

As far as the bigger/feminist picture goes, on the one hand I suppose it's a good thing that women are free to excited themselves that way if that's what they want to do. On the other, it's sad that they should feel it's necessary and that this portrayal of women is now considered the norm in many parts of the entertainment/music industry.

I really enjoyed React to Nicki Minaj - Anaconda: this video of teenagers reactions/opinions on the Anaconda video. On the while quite a reassuring representation of today's teens.

WyrdByrd · 24/09/2014 10:52

woman are free to express themselves

not excite themselves Blush Shock Grin

WyrdByrd · 24/09/2014 10:53

It's clearly not my day today.

Suzannewithaplan · 24/09/2014 11:31

so the false bottom, is it an implant as with false breasts?
will the buttocks need to be replaced every few years?
will the skin stretch leaving empty buttock sacks?
perhaps shes on comission with cosmetic ssurgery companies offering said proceedure?

Suzannewithaplan · 24/09/2014 11:46

thanks for all the funny video links, the farting one really made me :o and I'd not seen that Alanis Morisette video before

mls3 · 24/09/2014 11:50

Love that line where a guys just got to give her that look and the panties come off

PercyHorse · 24/09/2014 12:02

Feminism is about choice but not all choices are feminist.
