To be grossed out by Nicki Minaj's new video?

Re her Anaconda video. Oh my lord!!! To be fair I was more amused than grossed out so that's an unfair statement.

It's basically soft core porn (maybe a tad harsh) and the lyrics are just pure filth!!

Didn't know if anyone else had seen it?

I'm not shocked by it but it's pretty pointless. I got bored so didn't watch it all. The song is truly awful. I say song but honestly it is basically as though she's just completing a rhyming string of nonsense words.
Never since Des'ree have I heard such crap - remember 'I don't want to see a ghost, I'd rather have a piece of toast'? Lyrics are just abysmal.

Bulbasaur · 22/09/2014 19:10

When sex stops selling, celebs will stop making video's like this. Celebrities make a living selling themselves. Selling themselves for you to watch on screen, listen to their music, or even look them up so they don't fade into ambiguity and lose money. You may not agree with this video, but its in the top charts making bank. For that amount of money, I'd shake my ass on camera too. It's controversial enough to make people go look, and it's still tame enough to be viewable. It's the right combination of sexiness and mild shock to get people talking about her. It's marketing genius.

Look at Miley Cyrus. Her performance with Robin Thick was appalling, but look at how much revenue she created. She was on everyone's fore thoughts when made her new videos, that it was easy to sell new albums keep herself relevant.

Elvis Presley was controversial for his time. Not saying that it's comparable in terms of lewdness. But controversy generates discussion and popularity, and popularity generates revenue. Look at Lady Gaga, she's not flaunting it, but she sure does turn heads and people loved her for it.

Bulbasaur · 22/09/2014 19:14

is this what feminism is?

Feminism is about giving every woman the same opportunities as a man has.

It's about providing choice.

Not making every woman lock their sexuality in a box to conform.

Nikki chose to shake her ass. Other women might choose to become physicists. Both are fine.

Fubsy · 22/09/2014 19:29

Sometimes I long for the rebellion of punk - I'm so sick of sex sex sex money money money sex sex sex.

thecatfromjapan · 22/09/2014 19:39

But does Miley Cyrus benefit yiu doing what she does? Or benefit your children? Or just herself, and a handful of rich men in the entertainment industry? Does she make a lot of money for a very small number of people , at the cost of making the world you live in a little bit more shit?
I reckon feminism isn't about equal opportunities exploitation; it's about having a language to discuss gendered exploitation.
Even when that gendered exploitation is performed by women.
Equality is a bit more than the right of a small minority of men AND women to stamp on the exploited majority.

Branleuse · 22/09/2014 19:43

songs dont all have to be suitable for the children

Fubsy · 22/09/2014 19:45

In 20 years time someone needs to do a study into whether women who twerked suffer more or less from backache than those who didn't.

almapudden · 22/09/2014 20:14

The second parody is brilliant. The fart one is just stupid though :/

ithoughtofitfirst · 22/09/2014 20:40

Dammit when you LOL at something someone said on first page. Like do i tell them? Is it too late? I need a lie down.

No, Bulbasaur I don't agree. Can you imagine a male equivalent that actually got the same reactions? No, because men have not spent centuries being judged as sex objects. The fact that Nikki has this 'choice' only exists because of the very attitudes that serve to prevent women making other 'choices'.

CarryOn90 · 22/09/2014 21:12

if you don't like rap, don't listen to it.

Nicki writes her own raps and is hugely influential in her field. You can moan on about "how is this considered music?!" and that "back in my day..." bollocks (which makes you sound fucking bitter) but she's broken records and has had multiple singles in the charts at the same time (i think it was 7 in the billboard chart at once, and she was the first female rapper to do that for over 10 years). that's a huge achievement.

she has risen out of a horrible, horrible childhood (abusive father who tried to kill her mother) and if she was any other normal human being (which she IS) she would be WORSHIPPED on this site for her bravery, overcoming her past experiences and achieving so much.

But because she has a fantastic arse she dares to wave around (cue pearl clutching - jealous much?) and YOU PERSONALLY don't like the sound of her songs, she's a terrible person and you all feel the need to treat her like the antichrist.

oh she also raised over 250 million dollars for AIDS awareness. what more do you want from a person?????

rant over. fucks sake

SomethingOnce · 22/09/2014 21:25

Oh dear.

Still not as bad as dental freak show Lil Wayne's 'Love Me', though.

FreudiansSlipper · 22/09/2014 21:36

I can see nothing to get outraged about its not something I would let ds watch but I think the video is amusing its meant to be tongue in cheek

she is smart I many not have the same opinions as her but I have not lived her life and I am not in her industry she has created her own persona she is outselling male rap artists

TSSDNCOP · 22/09/2014 21:50

I couldn't do that with my arse. How do they get them to ripple like that? Is it sexicle?

The dude on the chair looks less like he's in possession of an anaconda so much he'd rather be playing on his x box.

Tulipblank · 22/09/2014 21:54

Fart parody is very funny. Literally had tears running down my face.

The videos is shit, as is the song, but the overly sexual pop video seems the norm nowadays.

This links to a funny parody...

7Days · 22/09/2014 22:21

You have fairly missed the point if you think it's jealousy and bitterness CarryOn90. It's a bit deeper than that.

CarryOn90 · 22/09/2014 22:42

7days I'm totally open to the argument about sexism in the industry and using sex to sell things - I just am really pissed off at how many people think it's okay to slag off a hard working accomplished individual because they think the fact she has a fake ass and the fact they personally don't like her songs makes her undeserving of respect

7Days · 22/09/2014 22:51

It's not really that people don't like her songs - well, not only, I suppose - but the fact that she is colluding in her own objectification and by extension ours, and our daughters'. ( I don't know about the fake ass bit!)
If you buy in to the notion that an overly pornified and sexualised society is damaging to young people, you have to criticise anyone who is perpetuating that, especially if they are doing it for their own enrichment.

She may well be hard working and accomplished and have overcome terrible things, but that's not the aspect of herself that's the selling point, is it?

Bulbasaur · 22/09/2014 23:13

No, Bulbasaur I don't agree. Can you imagine a male equivalent that actually got the same reactions? No, because men have not spent centuries being judged as sex objects. The fact that Nikki has this 'choice' only exists because of the very attitudes that serve to prevent women making other 'choices'.

Yep, and if sex didn't sell this music video wouldn't exist right now. When sex stops selling, women will stop selling it. But it's a bit daft to tell women to turn down large amounts of money simply because you don't think it's helping the greater good of all women kind.

The fact that sex still sells is a symptom that attitudes still need to change. It doesn't mean that women need to suddenly stop selling themselves in a way that's more palatable to your morals.

We could apply your same argument for SAHM's. The only reason they have that "choice" is because of the attitudes that prevented them from working in the first place. See? All that argument does is just make a different box for women to fit into instead of allowing them to define their own, as men are allowed to.

The fact is, they do have that choice. They just aren't making the one you happen to agree with.

temporaryusername · 22/09/2014 23:24

Yes, I see what you mean Bulbasaur and your point about SAHMs is interesting. I suppose I meant that the choice is not 'fine' to me, it is problematic, and I don't think it is about 'morals' as such, it is something other than that but I'm a bit too tired to express myself properly sorry!

CarryOn I must admit I have enjoyed some of Nikki Minaj's stuff in the past, but this isn't up to her usual standard.

Maybe this is just an attempt to finally do a track Sophia and Grace won't cover on the Ellen show. I mean surely they won't Confused.

PacificDogwood · 22/09/2014 23:28

Wait, wait, hang on a minute - that arse is fake?? Shock

How on earth do you fake a bahookie? One as wobbly as that?

It is a crap song with a rubbish video - not in the least erotic or enticing. Just meh.
But I am an old fogey and thankfully my DC are yet too young to go there

Feminism may have 'allowed' these women to make videos like this but how much of a 'choice' it really is, I don't know Hmm

7Days · 22/09/2014 23:29

But there is a strong argument that their choice harms the rest of us.

I dunno- is it like throwing toxic waste into the river we all drink from? Highly beneficial for a small number of people; mildly, incrementally harmful for a large number of people.

VeryStressedMum · 23/09/2014 00:29

I am the least prudish person I know and I was quite shocked at the video and the song, children will be watching it. In fact I was watching it because my 14 year old dd asked me if I'd seen it, I'd never heard of it so she put it on YouTube. My face was like this Shock, then I started giving my dds a talk their faces were like this Hmm
