...to be pissed of with Tesco wanting me to install IE?

I've been using the Tesco online ordering service for about 2 years now, quite happily, using Chrome as my browser. Tonight, it suddenly stopped working (no delivery times, search was buggered). Phoned their tech support to be told that it was my fault 'cos I use Chrome as my browser (always have done!) and they are 'upgrading' all the time which is why I can no longer make an order. They told me to use either IE (which I will not install due to security concerns) or Firefox (OK, I could use FF, but am being bloody -minded). I used to be a web designer - and it was a while ago so may be a bit out of date - but is Chrome really obsolete, and am I being unreasonable to expect Tesco's site to still work with it? Did I perhaps just get the tech support guy from Hell? Fed up cos have paid in advance for their delivery saver thing, and if I can't make an order, that's money wasted then - and have emailed them and told them so. Anyone else experienced this? I accept that I am unreasonably annoyed with this somewhat trivial issue, but still pissed off :)

I use chrome and haven't had a problem yet My DP used to have to switch to IE whenever he wanted to use the Santander website!

SpottyTeacakes · 19/09/2014 19:21

Yanbu. IE is shit. I use chrome but usually do my shop on my ipad so not sure if it's stopped working or not.

bloodyteenagers · 19/09/2014 19:24

You dealt with an arse of a 'support guy' who wouldn't know his arse from his elbow.
There is nothing wrong with chrome. But he's probably one of those that IE is far superior than anything else.
And fwiw, I have just tried, using Chrome and everything works.

So is your browser and other gumph up to date?
Also delete all your temp internet files and your cache

ElephantsNeverForgive · 19/09/2014 19:29

School has to be IE, won't speak to Fire Fox. Gets on my nerves because I always forget and it just sits there 'checking device compliance'

FurryDogMother · 19/09/2014 19:32

Thanks bloodyteenagers - thought I may have been face to arse, as it were :) Had already cleared cache and cookies and it's still buggered, but am looking forward to an Ocado delivery tomorrow now - and hopefully a reply from Tesco with a bit of grovelling in it :)

Just a thought....Do you have the latest version of Chrome? Does the Tesco website require Adobe Flashplayer? If so, do you have the latest version of Flash?
Maybe ask Tech Support for a list of their prerequisites?

LeezieLindsay · 19/09/2014 20:35

I haven't used IE for years so that will be the end of Tesco deliveries if it won't work with chrome same with DD

mumeeee · 19/09/2014 20:52

I'm surprised you can't use chrome. I have a hudle tablet which is as you know Tesco's tablet. Only bought a couple of months ago. Anyway chrome is the browser that is installed on there so of course that's what I use when I do a Tesco order from the tablet.

Jellykat · 19/09/2014 21:17

I've had problems with Tesco online and Chrome for quite a while, and am up to date with Adobe Flash (DS1 is head of the tech team for a large Internet company, so he tweeks my computer when he's home)
Even if i make it through the ordering bit without screaming and jacking it in, the 'verified by Visa' page cannot do its stuff. I've been told by Tesco that it's a common problem Hmm

I use Firefox for Tesco, and Chrome for everything else - so these days there's just the screaming bit left to deal with.. Smile

itchychin · 19/09/2014 21:28

I'm annoyed with photobox for the very same thing! Love Chrome HATE IE.

Bulbasaur · 19/09/2014 22:12

As web developers, they're probably programming to their most used browser for the site. The majority of users might be using IE, so they coded for that.

Considering that Chrome is becoming one of the most used browsers, they need to make their websites compatible. I worked for a site that had a majority user base of IE, and we still made sure it was compatible with Chrome.

FurryDogMother · 19/09/2014 22:46

So glad to hear that I'm not being very UR. Bulbasar you're probably right, but IE has so many proprietary extensions that it makes no bloomin' sense to code for that! I'm pretty sure I'm going to get an email tomorrow telling me that the support sloth I encountered today was a little misguided!

mummeee Am delighted to hear that the Hudle's default browser is Chrome, and anticipate a really fun chat with their (Tesco's) tech support tomorrow :)

I use Chrome, and order from Tesco most weeks. No problems, and Verified by Visa works fine too.... very odd.

bumpybecky · 19/09/2014 23:28

I've just placed an order using Chrome, no trouble at all :)

JuniperTisane · 19/09/2014 23:36

I had exactly the same problems you are having a few months ago. Couldnt pick a slot, couldnt search anything, all items unavailable. Except that I tried chrome, firefox, ie, default android, safari, every browser I could get my hands on and still the same. It was my account nothin to do with how I viewed it. In the end they passed me up to a manager at another number who got some tech people on it and did something to my account to fix it. Caused some head scratching for them for a bit though.

Have you tried on any other browser just to rule it out yet?

sykadelic · 20/09/2014 06:49
  • IE is shit but I have it because Microsoft were being a pain about it.
  • Chrome using way too much RAM for my liking. Piece of shit browser
  • Firefox FTW!

not really the point of your post but god I hate Chrome as much as I hate IE.

SanityClause · 20/09/2014 06:59

I always use Ocado, and I almost always get a message that I have saved money compared to shopping at Tesco. It's usually a couple of pounds. If it's more expensive than Tesco, they send me a voucher for the difference, which is usually for a pound or less. If Tesco are a PITA to use, you might want to consider using Ocado more often, if my experience is typical.

DoctorTwo · 20/09/2014 07:53

Can't use IE as I run a Linux based OS. Won't run Chrome as it's more or less bloatware on my hard drive, and Google records everything to improve their advertising algorithms. So Firefox it is. The only problem I have is when sites don't like that I have Javascript turned off, but that's easily sorted.

Well, I phoned Tesco again today, and finally managed to get some sense out of them. Apparently I was blessed with an idiot yesterday, and the site is just fine in Chrome - it was something to do with a corruption in my address details that caused the site to stop working. They re-entered them for me and lo and behold, it worketh again! Many thanks to all for advise etc.
