Went into lloyds bank this morning and as per usual there was a long que (8 people in front of me) and only 2 cashiers open. I needed to go to the counter, no other way of doing transaction.
Anyway, a woman staff member is standing at the end of the que accosting everyone who joins it asking "what are you in the bank for today" most people tell her they need to go to the counter, one Man goes off with her to have 'help' to use the paying in machine Hmm but the majority tell her they need to see a cashier, but still she pesters, "yes but what are you going to do? Can I help" she just went on and on,
So she asks me, I tell her if she wants to be helpful she can go and open another till as everytime I go in there's always a que and only 2 or 3 windows open.
She says 'oh I can't do that,it's not my job anymore'
Boils my piss, what a waste of time standing there all day when she could be doing something more useful,

Disclaimer: I was in a miserable mood before I reached the bank due to 2 chuggers in the precinct trying to get me to part with my money Angry

Oh YANBU! I have started saying "Oh it's private." when they ask what I want.

Then they say "Are you paying in?" and I repeat "It's private." and look stonily at them.

WorraLiberty · 19/09/2014 13:54

My local Barclays just say "Is anyone paying in cash/cheques?", then they point them towards the machine.

It's not her fault the bank won't let her open another till though.

My local has 8 counters and they're only allowed to open one. I reckon it's for the chop soon as they've made most of the staff redundant.

WorraLiberty · 19/09/2014 13:55

Plus if they didn't encourage people to use the paying in machine, the queue would be twice as long.

Cabrinha · 19/09/2014 13:59

Why the Hmm about the guy being shown how to use the paying in machine?
So he didn't know about it - big deal.
And look, she reduced your queue!

I think it's a good idea. And I expect the branch have a good idea whether it helps the queue or not. Might not have done on your snapshot of today's queue, but I've seen it really help.

Honeezreturn · 19/09/2014 14:01

It's just the way she kept pestering people after they had already told her they didn't need her help!
Surely she can see people are pissed off with queuing and her standing there doesn't help one bit. Even if it's her job, just shut up woman, asking once is enough!!

Littlebluebutterflies · 19/09/2014 14:01

The point is that actually not all transactions need to be done at the counter and 'queuewalkers' are proven to help reduce queues be doing exactly what she did (her job)

She wasn't being useless she was doing the job she has been assigned to do.

Most banks use this method now and it has been shown to help.

Thumbwitch · 19/09/2014 14:02

That would annoy me too - ok, she has to ask, she's asked, she's been told you don't want to tell her, she should smile and back off, and ask the next person in the queue instead.

MrsWinnibago · 19/09/2014 14:05

Yes but SOME of these staff members are VERY pushy.

LEMmingaround · 19/09/2014 14:05

YABU. Poor woman doing her job. Have some Cake and cheer up woman

Nomama · 19/09/2014 14:05

Oh yes. Total cow. And to think, she has to look at the miserable faces of customers who just don't see the point of her reducing the length of the queue... they just have a moan...

Honeezreturn · 19/09/2014 14:06

The man who went off to the machine was behind me in the queue so didn't help me Grin he went off with the woman muttering under his breath about not liking the machine blah blah
When she said it wasn't her job to man the tills, the machine man said " why, can't you be trusted with the money?" Grin

Whatevertheweather · 19/09/2014 14:06

Agree asking more than once could be annoying but people don't realise that the machines can do 90% of what the cashiers do. By educating people it will mean reduced queues in future. And yes lots of branch staff are being made redundant as the machines take over and the branch are gearing up for that!

LiverpoolLou · 19/09/2014 14:06

Eh? She was minding her own business. Confused

WiseGuysHighRise · 19/09/2014 14:08

Actually, I never used to use the envelope in slot things as I wanted a receipt but the "queue walker" explained that the machines could scan what I was putting in - so yes, her pushiness that day has saved me time in the long run.

WiseGuysHighRise · 19/09/2014 14:08

Corss post with whatever

Thumbwitch · 19/09/2014 14:09

The other thing is, that most people who use the bank regularly would know how the machines work etc. and would know what they needed to do and where. So being asked if you went in every week, for e.g., would really start to grate.

Thumbwitch · 19/09/2014 14:10

I used to love putting cheques into the slot machine - my receipt would come out with tiny miniature copies of the cheques! Grin

Honeezreturn · 19/09/2014 14:12

At least mrswinnebago agrees with me Smile

And I know she's only doing her job, but FFS just ask ONCE and move on,
Don't interrogate people about why they are in the bank,

Viviennemary · 19/09/2014 14:14

This happened to me while ago in the Halifax. She asked me how much Iwanted to withdraw. I said I wasn't discussing my finances in a queue. She thought I was being really awkward. As if Grin. But it really is a practice that should be stopped.

Cabrinha · 19/09/2014 14:16

Mr Oh So Funny with his "can't you be trusted with money?" sounds like a cock, she's just working.

PenisesAreNotPink · 19/09/2014 14:19

I was taking out 10 grand for the builder and had arranged it.

Silly queue walking woman wanted to know how much it was for - I just kept saying 'I'm here to pick something up, my name is ...'

As if I'm going to announce I'm picking up 10 grand in cash in the middle of a city centre branch known for its dodginess Hmm

ThatBloodyWoman · 19/09/2014 14:21

I am poop at machines, but happy to leave the queue to use one if someone will show me how.

comedycentral · 19/09/2014 14:21

She's just doing her job though.

I bet this just made her day though I tell her if she wants to be helpful she can go and open another till as everytime I go in there's always a que and only 2 or 3 windows open

Perhaps give some feedback to the bank about your experience as they may do something about it www.lloydsbank.com/contact-us.asp

Honeezreturn · 19/09/2014 14:26

Thank you comedy I looked on the lloyds website but there was no email addresses, seems they have not reached that stage of technology! there's a phone number but don't fancy waiting In anymore queues, virtual or otherwise!
I will try yours

Poor woman. I feel sorry for her ytryingto do this job in the face of such hostility. If she doesn't really strongly encourage people to free up the queue she gets into trouble and she doesn't havethe power to open up more counters. Save your anger for the banks themselves. My sympathies lie with her.
