Went into lloyds bank this morning and as per usual there was a long que (8 people in front of me) and only 2 cashiers open. I needed to go to the counter, no other way of doing transaction.
Anyway, a woman staff member is standing at the end of the que accosting everyone who joins it asking "what are you in the bank for today" most people tell her they need to go to the counter, one Man goes off with her to have 'help' to use the paying in machine Hmm but the majority tell her they need to see a cashier, but still she pesters, "yes but what are you going to do? Can I help" she just went on and on,
So she asks me, I tell her if she wants to be helpful she can go and open another till as everytime I go in there's always a que and only 2 or 3 windows open.
She says 'oh I can't do that,it's not my job anymore'
Boils my piss, what a waste of time standing there all day when she could be doing something more useful,

Disclaimer: I was in a miserable mood before I reached the bank due to 2 chuggers in the precinct trying to get me to part with my money Angry

My bank got rid of the counters all together! There is now a greeter and lots of machines, if you want to speak to a real person you have to be authorised to go upstairs...
I miss the olden days.

comedycentral · 19/09/2014 14:53

Tweet them, they seem to respond well to tweets.

KenAdams · 19/09/2014 15:03

She won't know how to use the cashiering systems any more, they change all the time, so she can't just open up another till.

LadyLuck10 · 19/09/2014 15:04

You seem absolutely miserable and rude. Do you think that she's asking these questions for fun so that she can deal with attitudes like yours or it's part of her job.
You sound charming.

Grumpyoldblonde · 19/09/2014 15:06

I am with you OP, I don't mind being asked once, but in my branch they don't like to take no for an answer, I am happy to use the machines to pay in cheques but a few weeks ago I had a large amount of cash to pay in and I did not want to put this into a machine, I also wanted to ask a question at the counter, I did not want to announce the amount of cash I had on me, I had to no say I was happy to queue at least 4 times, then the counter lady gave me a long look and said "why didn't you use the machine" I said I don't like them, the same as I don't like supermarket self serve, she replied "Oh yes, I hate those too" .
No reasonable person would mind being asked if they would like to use the machine but no should be no.

JustAShopGirl · 19/09/2014 15:11

I go into the bank and use the machines if I need to - if I go to the counter it is because the machines don't do what I want - like give me pound coins for the kids bus fares to school.

rainbowinmyroom · 19/09/2014 15:22

It's a cost-saving measure.

It's like those people in supermarkets who try to get people to use the self-serve. Just tell them, no thanks firmly.

I would do the same with anyone asking what I was there for. 'Personal business'.

I once lost 80 quid in cash in a paying in machine so avoid them like the plague now. And presumably the whole point of having the machine is to not have to employ so many staff, so it defeats the whole object when someone is then paid to stand next to it and supervise surely? YANBU!

WorraLiberty · 19/09/2014 15:47

How does it defeat the whole object?

They only need one queue walker, whereas they've probably laid off loads of staff like they have at my local bank.

Anyway, the woman who does the queue walking also does another job within the bank and only walks the queues at busy times.

AgaPanthers · 19/09/2014 15:55

It is a useful job, I don't understand why you wouldn't just answer, you're going to have to tell one of the bank's employees what you are doing anyway, so it isn't private is it?

Honeezreturn · 19/09/2014 15:58

ladyluck I will say again; I don't mind her asking ONCE but she just kept pestering like a dog with a bone! If somebody says no, then surely leave it at that,
Maybe she was on commission, and got a bonus for each customer she got out of the queueGrin

usualsuspect333 · 19/09/2014 16:02

She's doing the job she's paid to do.

The bloke who said 'can't you be trusted with money' sounds like a rude git.

It's not difficult to use the paying in machines. I much prefer them to queuing.

Littlebluebutterflies · 19/09/2014 16:16

This is such an interesting thread.

If an MNer posted a thread saying that a customer was rude to her everyone would be sympathetic but it's ok to be rude to some poor woman just trying to do her job.

If she asked you more than once, just say politely that you don't want to move out of the queue (and no she's not in commission For queue busting.

Please bear in mind that you might have though that old man being rude to her was funny but she has to hear such 'wit' hundreds of times a day and she's just trying to pay her mortgage.

MonstrousPippin · 19/09/2014 16:18

My only encounter with one of these people was rather unfortunate. I had to pop into the bank first thing in the morning to do a large transfer which involved talking to someone. To make sure I got in first (and not be late for work) I waited outside the bank before it opened. A queue formed behind me. When they opened the door, I was stopped by the helpful woman and thought she was going to serve me. She asked what I needed, I told her and she said "oh you need to queue over there" (exactly where I had been heading before she stopped me). This short conversation ensured I was right at the back of the queue whilst everyone sailed past me to the counter. All she could offer was a meek "sorry". I chuckle about it now but I was pretty annoyed!

Idontseeanysontarans · 19/09/2014 16:21

Yep, being rude to staff who are told how they have to interact with customers is hilarious, they're only there to be spoken to like shit anyway...
YABU, she was trying to do her job presumably as set down by her employer.

LiverpoolLou · 19/09/2014 17:09

I really don't understand why you wouldn't just answer her question. I think you were rude.

ilovesooty · 19/09/2014 17:16

Of course she won't be in commission. She'll more than likely be on performance management if she doesn't ask you several times whether the machines might serve your needs.
You sound really rude.

AgaPanthers · 19/09/2014 17:20

It's not only machines though, they also have other staff who can help with other tasks, like if you were opening an account, she would find someone who can help.

She knows better than you where to go in the bank, just answer the questions and be done with it.

ilovesooty · 19/09/2014 17:25

She'll have targets to meet. There may even be team meetings where people's targets are openly discussed.
Still, never mind. It's ok for you to be rude about her...

Honeezreturn · 19/09/2014 18:42

FFS I did answer her!!! I said I needed to use the counter services, she then asked me what for, I repeated I need to use the counter, I then said if she wants to help she could open up another till which was when she said that wasn't her job,
I wasn't rude, I didn't ignore her. I just get pissed off being accosted every single time I set foot in the bank.

OP posts:
AgaPanthers · 19/09/2014 19:20

you could have told her what you needed to use the counter for. Maybe she could have helped you. Sometimes I've been pulled out of the queue and helped by someone else.

MrsWinnibago · 19/09/2014 19:23

If you use the machines to deposit cash in Santander then it doesn't show up right away. So I don't like them. I won't be harassed into not speaking to a person. Some bank staff are almost aggressive in their insistence that you us the machine.

JustAShopGirl · 19/09/2014 19:30

I've had the conversation:

"can I help" , "no ta",
"what service do you need" "cash withdrawal"
"we can do that by machine" "no you can't"
"yes we can" "not £1000" -
" oh, no, but is there anything else we can do" "like I am going to leave THIS line, go to the machine, to put in my cheque, THEN come back to the end of this line to get my money out" Confused

ashtrayheart · 19/09/2014 19:35

Mrsw I bank with them and it shows in mine straight away.
