To think Andy Murray was silly to wade in to the debate….

His Mum is SOOOO not going to win Strictly!

Also, he had no gain. He can't vote so why say anything? Just seems foolish.

Agree

OraProNobis · 18/09/2014 22:24

Opinions. They're just like bum holes and everyone's got one. I suppose he felt the urge to share. Who knows.

nancy75 · 18/09/2014 22:28

considering how long it took him to get away from the anyone but England football joke he made years ago I am surprised he has put himself out there again. He is, of course, entitled to his opinion, but he might like to remember that most of the crowd at SW19 are English and crowd support can be make or break in a game of tennis

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 18/09/2014 22:29

What's he got to lose though? Plenty of celebs supporting both sides of the campaign. I don't see why he should be any different.

scaevola · 18/09/2014 22:32

It might have been better if he'd made his views known from early, or had kept them totally private, rather than the timing of is.

OTOH, he's a tennis player, not a sleb or a political, and who cares if he's media savvy or not?

nancy75 · 18/09/2014 22:35

He is a sleb and a tennis player - he earns millions from his image and has probably got a media management team!

GatoradeMeBitch · 18/09/2014 22:39

Maybe he has property in Scotland? I doubt he would tweet about voting if he couldn't.

He is an awkward bugger, but I like him! It's the smarmy smiling oozers like Beckham people should really be mistrustful of - in my opinion. I reckon with Murray what you see is what you get.

And as far as crowd opinion goes, Andy has never been popular. It's still only a few years ago that Centre Court erupted in laughter when Rafa Nadal said he thought Andy was doing really well. Any genuine tennis fan could see Andy would eventually win Slams. A lot of the Wimbledon 'fans' are there just to see and be seen. Stuff them! Grin

Cranfieldmc · 18/09/2014 22:39

I don't like the last minute nature of his support.

scaevola · 18/09/2014 22:40

He's sometimes in the news because of his tennis. He's not a sleb, he's got real achievements.

FoxSticks · 18/09/2014 22:42

this.

Bowlersarm · 18/09/2014 22:43

I don't understand why he let it be known so late. Why disclose at all at that stage? To get a last minute sway for undecided voters, or was he undecided himself? Seems odd to me.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 18/09/2014 22:47

Maybe he didn't want to get into a protracted debate.

Why would a yes vote make him unpopular in England? Doesn't he a right to his opinion - and to voice it?

Genuinely don't understand.

Vagabond · 18/09/2014 22:48

I guess I just wonder why he kept quiet for so long. He has obvious ties to Scotland - owns a business (hotel) in Dunblane. I just wonder if he felt the pressure to do so, specially as it is considered bad form to opine on a subject on the very day of the reckoning.

I really don't care what his opinion is. Just surprised that someone who is so adept at being gaffe free since his "anyone but England" comment could make such a statement when it was so late in the game.

Surely he's as entitled to his opinion, and to share it if he wants?

I really don't think that many (if any at all- which is more likely) would have their opinion swayed either way by what he thinks, so can't see the timing of it as a good or bad thing.

I think the "anyone but England" joke thing was totally overblown though, so perhaps I'm in the minority.

nancy75 · 18/09/2014 22:50

He has earned 22 million from endorsements, the say he is not a celeb or media savvy is just not true. He is an intelligent guy, he knows the reaction this will get.

deeedeee · 18/09/2014 22:50

Oooh a scottish man voices a political opinion ! That's obviously awful

divingoffthebalcony · 18/09/2014 22:52

No more silly than any other sleb giving their opinion.

Less silly, in fact, than Vivienne Westwood coming out for the Yes camp. At least he's Scottish.

nancy75 · 18/09/2014 22:52

I don't think anyone thinks voicing his opinion is awful, more that it is surprising coming from him - given what he said before and the crap he got for it. I know he lives in England, he probably has a house in Scotland but if he lives here can he vote?

Pumpkinpositive · 18/09/2014 22:55

I guess I just wonder why he kept quiet for so long.

Maybe he didn't have the stomach for reading a slew of comments about how he should have died in the Dunblane massacre?

Pumpkinpositive · 18/09/2014 22:56

He owns a hotel in Dunblane.

His mother lives there.

Tinkerball · 18/09/2014 22:58

What's that meant to mean about he should remember the crowd at SW bring English?

He should be able to tweet he supports a Yes vote - which a lot of people seem to be having trouble not viewing as an anti-England vote without being told by someone on twitter " I wish you had died at Dunblane ".

Vagabond · 18/09/2014 22:58

Bloody Vivienne Westwood and her "I hate England" comment.

She is so odious. Can't STAND her.

Unfortunately, most of us here can't vote with our feet on that one! ;-)

Tinkerball - it means that it is hard to win a tennis match if the crowd is against you. As Wimbledon is the biggest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world, with a £1.6 million prize I would imagine that Murray would probably like to win it again at some point in his career - that will be made far more difficult if the crowd are supporting anyone but Murray

nancy75 · 18/09/2014 23:03

The Dunblane stuff is vile and it should go without saying that nobody - famous or otherwise should have to put up with that
