It's the Daily Fail so don't click it if you don't want to.

Couple pop baby down by cliff edge for photo

I mean really? What were they thinking! The picture makes me feel ill.....were they just stupid or were they asking for trouble?

Half of the universe does have a below average IQ, otherwise it wouldn't be an average would it? An average (a mean average, anyway) by definition, is the midway point between two extremes. Thus, the average number of legs is less than 2, because there are more people with one leg than there are with three.

Hexu2 · 17/09/2014 09:59

I don't think IQ is the same as common sense.

I think one of our DGP has a completely normal IQ but seems in capable of thinking stuff through - if you point stuff out its obvious to them - and you get an oh yea or of course dud - but actual process doesn't always seem to happen.

Actually seeing and anticipating dangers - which were obvious to everyone else has gotten better over the years - initially very scary to be round with young DC. It's not just with safely - its with lots of things but the DC safety was a bit perplexing.

TheOpaqueAndJelliedTruth · 17/09/2014 10:00

No, it doesn't. It's not defined that way. For two reasons:

  1. Average describes a band distributed around 100. Lots of people are in this band.

  2. The number 100 is the commonest IQ score to get (this is how the test is set up, though there are some issues with it). Lots of people score 100, so there are not enough remaining for there to be 50% scoring lower.

Ok, thanks for that. I feel a bit sick now.

My children love mountain climbing and it was always a bit nerve wracking when they were little, even though they were in safe hands. That baby is not in safe hands.

OPaque speaks sense!

That is a pretty stupid thing to do.

There was a tragedy this summer involving hapless tourists without respect for the environment they are in. A German family decided to wonder off after a glacier tour, and went beyond all the barriers, saying in all different languages that it was dangerous and do not pass this point. With their kids. Who then got to witness the glacier calve and their parents get crushed. Some people take stupid risks just for a holiday snap.

Poolomoon hating 'statistics like that' is a bit like hating the fact you cant win the lottery every week. Bell curves are a mathematical description of how certain traits are distributed through populations - they dont need to know your individual iq!! That is how it works, there's no disagreeing with it, any more than you can disagree with gravity!

QuintessentiallyQS · 17/09/2014 10:15

My boobs disagree with gravity. That is why I am wearing a bra.

QuintessentiallyQS · 17/09/2014 10:15

I am also a bear of very little intelligence! Grin

No it isn't.

What's the mean of the numbers 1, 1, 1, 2, 10? 7.5

What's the median? 1

What's the number that is "a midway point between two extremes"? 5.5.

Babies have no sense of the danger of falling. I wish I could remember but experiments putting babies on a high surface connected to another with clear plastic. Young babies merrily crawl over 'nothing' older babies "test" the surface by banging it (indicating they know they need something to crawl on).
Terrifying to see this picture.
