To really HATE the idea of National Stockings Day - even if it is for a good cause

I've just been sent a press release about it. Here's an extract

"To celebrate National Stockings Day, Charnos Hosiery will once again be encouraging women to ditch the convenience of tights in favour of stockings for a day and support Breast Cancer Care. This year’s theme is ‘The only way is stockings’ – encouraging women to wear their stockings/ hold ups following the example of this year’s stocking ambassador, the star of hit ITV2 show The Only Way is Essex, Lydia Bright.

“I’m so excited to be a part of this year’s National Stockings Day, Breast Cancer Care is a wonderful charity and I love that Charnos are trying to raise awareness of the cause. Every girl instantly feels sexier when they slip into a pair of stockings and I just love Charnos’ classic and stylish hosiery,” says Lydia.

Grim. Confused

Why does all charity things seem horrible these days, what's wrong with a run or a walk or even just quietly donating to charity when you feel like it?!

comedycentral · 16/09/2014 16:36

This sounds awful, I think I am going to have to cancel my social media accounts until it blows over!

AnyFucker · 16/09/2014 16:36

Yes, it's crap. When is this meant to be ? I shall get my facebook-culling red button all nicely fired up in readiness.

However, with the nonentity that is Ms Bright as "ambassador" with a bit of luck it will bomb spectacularly.

noblegiraffe · 16/09/2014 16:39

That's not a raising awareness campaign, that's an advert for Charnos. I just love charnos classic and stylish hosiery?? FFS.

MrsWinnibago · 16/09/2014 16:41

Eew. That's GRIM!

Nancy66 · 16/09/2014 16:41

I wish respectable charities wouldn't endorse this sort of thing - I know they want funds and publicity but this is seedy

"Raising awareness" is just the latest 'hey look at ME'. I am becoming less likely to give to charities that use this form of marketing.

Oh ffs this is going to be all over FB isn't it?
I'm going to be unfriending lots of people

daisychain01 · 16/09/2014 16:44

Out with the old ice bucket, in with the new nora batty's.

WorraLiberty · 16/09/2014 16:47

Worse still, it's going to be all over MN with people moaning about it.

usualsuspect333 · 16/09/2014 16:49

It is a bit seedy but I wouldn't unfriend anyone over it.

TortoiseshellSpecs · 16/09/2014 16:55

Who the frig is Lydia Bright?

Veritata · 16/09/2014 16:55

I'm ancient enough to have dim memories of the horrors of wearing suspenders. There is no way in a million years that I would go for it. It's utterly pointless anyway - we're supposed to invest in stockings/hold-ups and possibly suspenders to "raise awareness"? Why not just give whatever you'd spend on the stupid things direct to the charity?

iwantgin · 16/09/2014 16:57

For real?

What about those of us who don't wear tights or stockings?

Load of bleedin' codswallop.. grumble, grumble....

ifuknow · 16/09/2014 16:59

YANBU I hate the idea too, are you supposed to post a selfie wearing sozzies for men to perve over?

chockbic · 16/09/2014 17:01

Has to be a man who dreamt up this idea.

CurlyWurlyCake · 16/09/2014 17:01

It's pathetic, I'm already dreading the raise awareness day at work Hmm

Nancy66 · 16/09/2014 17:02

Yes, I imagine the selfie posting is part of it.

I've still got the surgical stockings I had to wear after a knee op. Maybe I'll post a pic of me in them...that'll get 'em going

OP posts:
chockbic · 16/09/2014 17:02

Oo aye a good old pair of Nora Battys should do it.

Perhaps I should post a video of myself attempting to sit down in a pair of stockings? They don't make stockings and suspender belts long enough for a 6'1" woman so it just pings off. I could raise funds for the fight against cellulite...

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 16/09/2014 17:10

You say stockings, I don't think breast cancer... I just don't understand how they linked those things together.
I don't tend to tuck my boobs in to my stockings... yet.

To me the stunt should link to the subject they are trying to highlight. Like Jeans for Genes day used to do, that made sense, it was a good play on words.
Maybe a baps for baps event (- having to make the best sandwich in a bap that you can in under 30 seconds) would be at least a play on the themes.
Or a run around Bristol for the Bristols...
(ok I am out of euphemisms here, but I am sure you get the idea).

YANBU. It just seems like an ad campaign for the stocking company, and therefore loses the real message somewhat.

ShadowStar · 16/09/2014 17:20

Oh, come on.

This isn't about supporting breast cancer. This is about getting women to buy stockings and suspender belts and boost lingerie company's profits.

If they really wanted to support breast cancer, they'd be promoting a national no stockings / tights day, where women go bare legged for a day, and donate the money they would have spent on a pair of stockings / tights to a cancer charity instead.

AMumInScotland · 16/09/2014 17:23

Yeah right, "Spend money (preferably with us) to help charity by raising awareness of our company some wimmen's issue"
