I enjoy Facebook as a way of keeping in touch with people and I don't want to cancel my account, but I really am getting fed up of "friends" sharing videos/posts/discussions that are downright racist. It really gets me down. I unfriend people who share like this, but I can't believe how many people have these racist views Sad

Hide the friends, unfriend them or high those posts. It's not hard.

Latara · 16/09/2014 10:36

I have noticed this - at first I thought certain people were sharing 'Britain First' memes and memes from other fascist groups by accident.
Then I noticed a pattern with certain people and realised some of my FB friends are clearly in agreement with these groups.

So I joined pages such as 'UAF', 'Exposing Britain First' and 'Hope not Hate' as an antidote to the hatred. and quite often I share memes from them.

Latara · 16/09/2014 10:38

Giles the problem is that although you can 'unfriend' people or 'hide' their posts - you now know their true colours and it leaves you feeling sick that so many people feel that way.

grocklebox · 16/09/2014 10:38

It's not Facebook, its the company you CHOOSE to keep on there. Your friends are racist assholes.

I don't see anything like you describe on my FB feed. Because my friends are not racist assholes.

FunkyBoldRibena · 16/09/2014 10:39

I rarely see anything racist as I don't have racist friends.

Zucker · 16/09/2014 10:40

Have to agree with grocklebox, it's your friends liking and sharing these things that's the problem. I have never seen anything like that on my timeline. At the moment its full of cake pictures and cute dog pictures.

magpiegin · 16/09/2014 10:41

It's not Facebook's fault, it's the friends you have on Facebook. I don't see any of these posts as I don't have racist friends.

Noodledoodledoo · 16/09/2014 10:43

I don't think you can blame facebook itself - I see none of what you descibe on mine.

Think it's your friends. Unfollow them. It is that easy.

I have one friend who likes to rant about all sorts (feminist issues, rape issues, MOD and how poorly they are treated- all valid causes but not when we get 10 plus posts a night on them) or goes on and on and on about her wonderful husband which to me is dull and I am not interested in but I just unfollow her so I can't see it - don't want to unfriend.

If its ads/suggested posts coming up then use the block facility on the app or website and it will stop posting them.

Bulbasaur · 16/09/2014 11:14

My friends are generally decent people. I don't get racist crap on my timeline, because I unfriend the people that put that crap on there.

Idontseeanysontarans · 16/09/2014 11:19

It can be pretty shocking to see the true colours of someone you thought was a decent person - just because they're behind a keyboard some people think they can post the most shocking crap without considering the feelings of other people.
I unfriend usually, I don't want to be associated with people who are too thick or too prejudice to see any other point of view no matter what my relationship is/was with them.

Pagwatch · 16/09/2014 11:21

Yep, what others have said.

I have never seen any racist or anti-Islamic posts. You get the feed based on who you 'friend'

rallytog1 · 16/09/2014 11:25

It's sad. I've seen some posts like this from relatively new friends, who I met on maternity leave. I'm saddened to see some of them aren't who I thought they were. The dilemma is do you just wash your hands of them, or do you attempt to help develop their education on the matter?

HenriettaTurkey · 16/09/2014 11:27

I have blocked all Britain First updates. Too many people were sharing them.

It's so much better now!

Idontseeanysontarans · 16/09/2014 11:27

Rallytog, I tried for a while to get people to see a different point of view, posting Snopes links and actual facts etc but decided I was wasting my time after a while, very few people want to see anything other than their own point of view when they hold a prejudiced opinion - because we're 'soft headed lefties' apparently Hmm

EBearhug · 16/09/2014 11:28

Change your friends. I'm not getting any posts like this.

GlassNoodle · 16/09/2014 11:32

Um, the problem is clearly with the people you are friends with - block them. If that leaves you with friend list of 2, get new friends. I don't see anything like this on my fb page. I don't have that many friends but they do post nice, interesting stuff! I don't get it when people are friends with 100s and 100s of people who they never speak to - surely their home page is just full of the boring lives of strangers?

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 16/09/2014 11:32

Don't really see many but my usual response is some people are murderous psychopathic bastards like IsIs and they hide behind religion to do so. All religions have psychopaths that do this.

The vast majority of people world wide are decent and peaceful.

Religion is no excuse for murder.

They usually agree. Think some people repost things without reading or thinking. .

DoJo · 16/09/2014 11:59

This AIBU is nothing to do with Facebook - you are saddened by the number of people in the world who hold racist views. Facebook gives them a platform to promote their views, no more. Deleting your Facebook account won't cure racism or prejudice against Islam, it will just prevent you from facing the fact that you are friends with people who hold abhorrent views.

MrsOomBoomBoom · 16/09/2014 12:38

It's not a problem with Facebook. It's people using Facebook as an "acceptable" platform to share their views. I've unfriended some distant relatives recently and people that I've know for years through the kids, who I have met regularly for coffee. It upsets me because I trusted these people. I feel like all of a sudden my feed is full of politics. I want cute kids and fluffy cats!

Thanks Latara, I have liked all those pages. Makes me feel better I'm not the only one exeriencing this!
