Extreme couponing

$1,200 worth of stuff for $103, complete madness, or not? I'm sat here open mouthed, 60 odd bottles of mustard and her husband doesn't like it.

Its utterly mental. Garages full of toothbrushes and paper towels. Makes for very exciting tv viewing though!

shitatusernames · 15/09/2014 14:19

I've never watched it before, one woman has coupons for dishwasher tablets but has 40 boxes already, her son has 60 odd rolls of toilet roll under his bed ha ha.

heheh. i did see a really great one where a woman went couponing for stuff for the charity that accomodated her while her baby was ill in hospital. She turned up with about $900 worth of dried goods and bottled drinks and paid about $30 for it all.

shitatusernames · 15/09/2014 14:24

Wow, now that is good, it really must be a full time job to do it every week, maybe I'm jealous and would love to try this out one day lol

FreakinScaryCaaw · 15/09/2014 14:25

which channel is it on?

shitatusernames · 15/09/2014 14:29

I'm watching on home and health.

I think it would be great to do it for a food bank or so thing, but to buy 60 bottles of mustard and thousands of loo rolls for personal use just seems like hoarding

shitatusernames · 15/09/2014 14:37

Yes it does, doing it for food banks really is a great idea.

I've seen it a couple of times, but always end up wondering what they actually eat?

They may well have a garage full of burger relish & a shed full of pickled beetroot - but in the 5 full trollies they take through the checkout there doesn't seem to be one actual meal Confused.

Surely it's not saving money if you then have to go out & buy something to go with your burger relish and pickled beetroot?

I'm all for using a coupon for something you'd buy anyway, but this just seems a bit bonkers TBH.

Or maybe I'm spectacularly missing the point Grin.

squoosh · 15/09/2014 14:39

They think they're saving money but they're just obsessed with spending really.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 15/09/2014 14:41

Agreed though, that getting the stuff for a food bank would be great. Then lots of people would get a small amount of stuff they might actually use.

FreakinScaryCaaw · 15/09/2014 14:43

I only have freeview.

Raeray · 15/09/2014 14:46

I love this programme! I've seen them do it for a food bank before, but the others I've seen have just been the 120 pot noodles, 55 cat food sachets (when they don't even have a cat!) etc etc! Makes good guilty pleasure tv though!! Grin

FrootLoopy · 15/09/2014 14:46

I'm gathering this is in the US? They have lots of coupons there. A lot of the store specials can only be taken advantage of if you use your coupon, unlike here.

I barely remember to use my Boots ones or my Sainsburys ones that are sitting in my purse, can't imagine going through pages of coupons in the newspaper, catalogues etc and then actually USING them.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 15/09/2014 14:47

if its free though, then its worth getting really. I think a few of them let the neighbours come and get stuff as needed. Also some stuff they actually make money on so they use the money accrued to spend on fresh products. Probably helps that they dont have the ideal diets to start with but hey ho!

moxon · 15/09/2014 14:50

I accidentally read this thread title as "extreme coupling" and just had to click on it. Both v relieved and somewhat disappointed. Confused

murphys · 15/09/2014 14:51

I honestly think that they have a hoarding problem. As Santa says, there is no food for a meal in those trolleys. The one I saw yesterday the chap had something like 350 bottles of cola in his store, there was a rack with dental floss - who ever in a lifetime would use that much dental floss. The fact is that they can get it for nothing, so they do but they will never use it all...

enderwoman · 15/09/2014 14:54

I'd imagine that the addiction is getting a big discount and the adrenaline that must run while your goods are scanned rather than a spending addiction.

Lots of them seem to donate goods that are of no use to them like nappies, bottled drinks and pet food. One episode had a couponer buy organic, healthy food for a foster home and another bought cheap items for a school sports event.

I'm very jealous...

Peaceloveandbiscuits · 15/09/2014 15:02

I have a friend in USA who does this and she donates most of it to a homeless charity she's involved with.

gingee · 15/09/2014 15:05

One I saw that was really good was when they actually made money with their purchases so used that to get a load of mince chicken and veg which they could use with the dried stuff packet sauces etc and it came to 0 at the cash register. And another where the lady donated it to food banks and she and her dds and friends would go once a month with a van and get like 500 bottles of pop and 100 boxes of cereal for free etc

x2boys · 15/09/2014 15:07

I watched one once twin sister they had cupboards full of nappies in various sizes neither of them had a child!!

mswibble · 15/09/2014 15:18

If you could get away with doing it over here, I would definitely dabble in a bit of extreme couponing! Though not to the extent that the people on EC do.

Im jealous of their stashes of toiletries and cleaning products but I wouldnt be so keen on a stockpile of processed foods, I prefer a good old yellow sticker hunt to satisfy my bargain hunter urges!

rainbowinmyroom · 15/09/2014 15:21

Great if you are doing it for a food bank, charities or shelters. Otherwise? Hoarding and a bit twisted.

AbbieHoffmansAfro · 15/09/2014 15:24

It would be good to do it and then barter with other couponers. You could do it in a kind of club structure and all save a fortune.

Annarose2014 · 15/09/2014 15:24

Yes! The nappy one!

Imagine starting to date that girl and opening the nappy cupboard......Shock
