Extreme couponing

$1,200 worth of stuff for $103, complete madness, or not? I'm sat here open mouthed, 60 odd bottles of mustard and her husband doesn't like it.

I saw one of these once where the woman actually bought a massive shed that looked more like a warehouse it was so huge as her garage and spare rooms were already full! Dont really understand why they need so much stuff, and they do approach it like a full time job most of the time.

squoosh · 15/09/2014 15:31

I prefer the programme where people blindly buy a lock-up full of crap. They spend $2000 and then find out there's a couple of broken lawnmowers in it.

x2boys · 15/09/2014 15:38

Yes that's good too sqoosh they get a peek though don't they? I also like pawn stars have a bit of a crush on the main guy!

x2boys · 15/09/2014 15:42

You would Need loads of room to store stuff though I saw one where the mother had a basement full of cleaning products and toiletries and her daughter in law/was just able to help, herself that would be good.

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 15/09/2014 15:43

I always feel sorry for the poor sod behind them in the supermarket who needs a deodorant only to find the person in front has cleared the shelves of all 700...

...not to mention being behind them at the checkout Shock

murphys · 15/09/2014 15:44

Squoosh, I love that show. Storage Wars.. Grin.

I read that Brandon found a dead body in a unit once Shock

murphys · 15/09/2014 15:46

x2boys Rick??

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 15/09/2014 15:49

I love that programme. Wish they would make a new series.

We can't do it here. We don't have the same type of coupons and most stores have a limit on the amount of coupons that they allow per transaction usually 10-20% of the total.

x2boys · 15/09/2014 15:51

Yes rick I quite fancy him!

HighwayDragon · 15/09/2014 15:51

but when the zombies come you won't need an ofrs!

murphys · 15/09/2014 15:55

x2boys · 15/09/2014 15:57

Lol Murphys!

jay55 · 15/09/2014 15:58

It's just hoarding by another name.

Pasadenadreaming · 15/09/2014 16:03

When we first moved to the US, I was excited to see booklets of coupons inside the Sunday paper and thought we'd save loads of money. However they were almost always for things we either didn't want, or for really unhealthy food. Never anything for fruit and veg, for example, and in California you weren't allowed to use coupons for dairy either.

If you had a card for a store - the equivalent of a boots card or a Tesco club card - you would often save on special offers in the store just by showing the card at the checkout. I ended up with so many pieces of plastic but the savings were significant so it was crazy not to.

I still don't know how the extreme couponers find the time to do it or have the storage space for the zillion loo rolls or whatever they are buying.

shitatusernames · 15/09/2014 16:16

moxon Grin

I think this show is going to be my guilty pleasure, just to see how much they get it for.

DH loves pawn stars, and storage wars, what's the bloke called in pawn stars? The son's friend? He got a coin made with his head on the other, was hilarious.

I don't know how they got away with it tbh. Usually there are limits are bin there, maximum amounts of transactions per customer. And it's incredibly risky as if they can't get enough of one item to pay for the rest of the shopping then the whole thing goes to pot. I'm. Another one who stares at their shelves full of toothbrushes and tampons and won elders where the hell the food is

shitatusernames · 15/09/2014 16:29

The 2nd show, they had to call in a couple of friends to stand with them, there was a limit, and they'd been in there 5 hours!! It actually sounds like a nightmare.

I'm not a collector of coupons but are coupons worth using? I was in a UK shopping mall a week ago and a man offered me a free small bar of Galaxy Honeycomb Crisp (or whatever it was) and a 30p coupon. A closer look when I went to Sainsbury's showed that the coupon was for a 40g bar of chocolate. Did Sainsbury's have a bar that small? No. The coupon is now in the bin and the free bar from the rep is in the obvious place.

I would not have the time to be a couponer....

Clutterbugsmum · 15/09/2014 17:08

Giles that's why you see them splitting their trolley's into the maximum shop loads so they do various transactions to get around that.

I agree I don't understand when they show at the beginning of the show the garages/basement 'storing' 20k of stuff why they go and buy more. I kind of understand people and donating it to charity.

LividofLondon · 15/09/2014 17:15

I accidentally read this thread title as "extreme coupling"

Me too Moxon!Grin Then I reread it and was expecting an "am I being unreasonable to hold people up in Tesco while I pay using 100 coupons". So disappointed it's not even an AIBU, just a "chat" topic about a programme I don't watch and can't even getSad

Didyouevah · 15/09/2014 17:22

I saw once where the barcodes wouldn't scan.

The checkout lady had to type them all in by HAND!

I'd be so pissed off - and it was definitely for something like mustard. Who the hell needs 500 jars of the stuff?

Crazy.

Perfectlypurple · 15/09/2014 17:29

I love this program. especially when they take it straight to a food bank.

Gileswithachainsaw · 15/09/2014 17:37

But they drag their kids round at all hours of the night and send them into bins to pull out books of coupons people chucked away.
