An iScotland will need a tax office, funded by the taxes we already pay. Why would they not do that job?

StatisticallyChallenged · 13/09/2014 22:10

Ipsos Mori (I think) did a survey around the time the Tories were kicking off their welfare cuts. 50% of scots said they thought benefits were too generous - the same as in the UK as a whole. Benefits cuts could easily happen here too.

And that's before you factor in the cuts we will have to make to support either CU or Sterlingization.

elastamum · 13/09/2014 22:11

Because you wont need nearly as many of them. Scotland currently processes tax payments for Ruk

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 13/09/2014 22:12

Why would it be mean to ask about an ex msps employment record? Are you expecting me to jump to his defence?

Where did I criticise hard work? I do enough of it and still manage to be active, much more so recently. And I won't be stopping any time soon. Have some confidence in yourself and others.

SantanaLopez · 13/09/2014 22:12

You won't need as many people working in tax.
You will need to pay to set up the department, too. Including things like computer software.

scaevola · 13/09/2014 22:13

Military: not hugely clear, but a few principles:

  • the two resulting forces must be adequately structured/equipped for their respective roles.
  • rUK will continue with the same capability (even if differently structured) and as they want to shed manpower anyhow, it's not an all bad opportunity
  • iScotland needs to say what it wants its forces to do (but statements to date do suggest a defence force) and what it thinks it needs to do that.
  • individuals need resign from rUK forces if they opt for iScot nationality (nationals of certain foreign countries can already join the British military,no reason not to apply that to Scotand). I can't think of a reason not to offer a TUPE-type transfer to future Scottish forces, but doubt they could insist personnel transfer against their will.
  • some cap badges will clearly continue as Scottish, but size/role is in no way fixed.
LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 13/09/2014 22:14

We can and will negotiate our share out of the one we've already paid into.

Believe it or not people, we contribute, we pay for all these things already.

WildThong · 13/09/2014 22:15

lovely its blue sky thinking, very laudable but it just isn't going to happen.
When money is short it is always the poor who suffer first and worst. This bunch in ScotGov can not and will not deliver what you want.

I do believe it. But it's not enough to cover the start up expenses. What use is the software that the rUK will use in tax, for example? Scotland would need their own.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 13/09/2014 22:16

Which bunch at you referring to?

scaevola · 13/09/2014 22:18

Just potted an important omission in my previous post: I meant

"individuals need not resign from rUK forces if they opt for iScot nationality"

Sorry

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 13/09/2014 22:18

And why do the poor suffer first when there's millions in unpaid, dodged taxes there for the taking? Why do we accept that those with the least get more taken off them? What kind of nation accepts that?

StatisticallyChallenged · 13/09/2014 22:19

We will need to cover set up costs. Massive IT systems which cost a fortune to design, build and test for example. This is a significant expenditure over the number of organisations we will need to create.

SantanaLopez · 13/09/2014 22:19

You're dodging the question, Lovely.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 13/09/2014 22:20

Are you all happy to live in a society like that?

Because I sure as he'll aren't. The Tories won't change. Labour won't deliver, then what options do we have?

This is our chance.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 13/09/2014 22:20

Which question?

SantanaLopez · 13/09/2014 22:20

Oh good, we're back to the Scottish people being wonderful.

StatisticallyChallenged · 13/09/2014 22:21

Given that our current Scottish politicians are doing a pretty good job of cozying up to billionaires and pledging to cut corporation tax, why do you believe it will be any different?

CoreyTrevorLahey · 13/09/2014 22:21

Maybe one day we can campaign together

I hope that would be possible one day, OO. I'm fine, please don't feel bad, just been through the wringer a bit with this the past few days! Smile

I can't wait till it's over. When the dust clears, I hope enough people are still engaged enough to work together for something better for us all. That, I think, is what Jimmy Reid would have wanted to see, that's what I reckon the real common weal would be.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 13/09/2014 22:21

Who said that?

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 13/09/2014 22:23

Current bring the key word.

You're assuming I'm a supporter of the current Scottish government.

WildThong · 13/09/2014 22:24

So miss my point entirely and pull me up on one word, how close-minded are you? Bunch refers to the current government incumbents of the extremely expensive eyesore in Edinburgh who have lied, shouted, bluffed and blustered this country to the edge of a disaster.
Listen up "people", change is more likely to happen if we stick together.

OP posts:
LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 13/09/2014 22:24

Why wouldn't I hope for Better? Why are you accepting that that's the way things are?

StatisticallyChallenged · 13/09/2014 22:24

I think that's possible Corey. I'd agree, most of us who are voting no also want a fairer society, to tackle injustice etc. It's just that we don't think independence is going to help to achieve that, partially because of all the problems we anticipate as a result. Doesn't mean we won't work to achieve those aims if we're part of the UK.

OneNight · 13/09/2014 22:24

We can and will negotiate our share out of the one we've already paid into.

What many people seem to forget is that if we vote to leave the UK they won't be our friends anymore. There will be no conciliatory little chats by the fireside. It would be hardball.

I think that your confidence is deluded. We simply won't have the cards to play the sort of hand that you seem to expect.
