Should I be annoyed about this letter from DDs teacher?

DD is in year 2...she's been having extra help for reading since year 1. we discovered she needed glasses at the start of year one and so had lost most of reception due to not seeing well at all.

So the extra help has been great and she's making progress.

I got a letter tonight, typed something like this

"Dear parent, SmallWinni is going to be having some extra reading practice with a volunteer named Tanya. She will cover x and y and z and the books will be different to the ones she fetches home. We hope that Elizabeth enjoys her extra reading time."

Confused

"Elizabeth" is actually a friend of my DDs so I assume she is also benefiting from the kind volunteer's time. But....isn't it a bit crap to make mistakes like this? For all the teacher knows, I don't want other parents knowing my DD has/needs extra help...and Elizabeth's mum might feel that way too.

As it happens I'm not ashamed of DD needing extra help so if the other child's letter includes my DDs name I don't mind but the letter COULD have had very personal info in it!

Shall I say something and what?

YANBU OP. I wouldn't accept the excuse that a teacher was "busy" and mixed up the names. I would definitely have a word on Monday. I think that a professional that works with children should be able to get things right first time. It doesn't inspire confidence does it?

PickledPorcupine · 12/09/2014 22:40

..but don't moan about your hours to me! I work hideous hours too. Nothing to do with anything. = biting my head off

MrsWinnibago · 12/09/2014 22:41

Notacs yes exactly. Teachers on here complain so much it actually erodes a lot of faith. Many on MN don't seem to be happy at all in their profession. So why carry on if it's that bad?

But the first name that is mentioned is your daughters name and this letter wasn't out the blue? So it's clearly intended for you.

Please don't complicate your issue with the school but implying to them that you don't know if it was meant for you when you know it was.

BlackeyedSusan · 12/09/2014 22:42

not acceptable at all. ex teacher.

theendoftheendoftheend · 12/09/2014 22:42

nick I once rang a suspect and spoke to him believing he was the IP (he didn't even know he was a suspect at that point!). Op people make mistakes, mine was pretty bad, I don't think the teachers was.

Berlin where did I say I'd go in guns blazing? Grin

Pikcled if you think that's "biting your head off" I can only assume you live with fairies in the Forest of Goo and Gentle Things.

Sometimes I wonder why people post in AIBU. Why not just put it in chat?

HmmAnOxfordComma · 12/09/2014 22:43

Tbh, I would be more concerned about "fetches home" (??????!!!!!!) than the name mix up.

MrsWinnibago · 12/09/2014 22:43

Nicky "Please don't complicate the issue"

Grin you're not in the interrogation room now love! My thread...I'll do what I like!

theend we could probably be here all night talking about minor errors we have made or heard of!

TheBuskersDog · 12/09/2014 22:44

You know you were meant to get a letter because your daughter has met the volunteer and knows she is going to be reading to her.

Nicknacky · 12/09/2014 22:45

Ok, I'm out. Do what you want then. Crack on looking like a moany parent.

MrsWinnibago · 12/09/2014 22:45

Look...there's some very differing opinions on here...some from ex teachers who think I am NOT bu and others from people who think there are more important things to worry about...I will take a bit of both...it's not a HUGE issue but it indicates some slapdash work where there should be care taken. So to me, that's an issue.

PickledPorcupine · 12/09/2014 22:45

Thanks, I'm quite happy there.

Permanentlyexhausted · 12/09/2014 22:46

Apologies if someone else has already said thisLooks to me as though a letter has been copied and pasted but a mistake has been made and they have forgotten to change one instance of the name.

Yes, it's a breach of privacy but a fairly minor one. And, if my theory is right, it isn't your daughters privacy that has been breached. It is her friends.

Notacs · 12/09/2014 22:46

I think it is fine to acknowledge minor errors happen.

But what I object to is saying that because they are minor they become acceptable.

They aren't. It doesn't mean someone will go in guns blazing - but a polite 'oh, did you realise ... .' is PERFECTLY acceptable!

There are always reasons people make mistakes and I've made mistakes myself but these are reasons NOT excuses.

MrsWinnibago · 12/09/2014 22:46

Busker I ASSUME I was meant to get the letter. That's all. I have no reall information as the letter is not clear is it? That may seem petty but there you go.

Our secondary school managed to send the wrong children's reports home to dozens of children last summer, so nothing surprises me.

HeySoulSister · 12/09/2014 22:47

You should mention this op. This is your child so it's your business

MrsWinnibago · 12/09/2014 22:48

Notacs thanks! That's what I would do...I wouldn't go in all angry woman....I'd be more like "Oh this letter includes DDs name and another child's...I thought you'd like to know incase you might need to check over the others that went out"

That's all! Not like I was going to storm up and slap her or something!

OP posts:
Notacs · 12/09/2014 22:48

Oh well that's absolutely fine then, if the child who's privacy has been breached isn't your own flesh and blood!

ilovesooty · 12/09/2014 22:49

Teachers on here complain so much

Usually in response to endless threads complaining about teachers. And it's usually a response, not a complaint.

noblegiraffe · 12/09/2014 22:49

I don't think anyone has said it's acceptable. Plenty think it's not worth stirring your arse about.

Pointing out to people every time they make a minor error doesn't make you some sort of heroic crusader for high standards, it makes you a nitpicky arse who pisses people off.

Pick your battles.
