...to think that pound shop beauty brands are a heap of rubbish

or are there undiscovered wonders lurking on the shelves?

I ask this because a couple of my friends have recently been raving about certain bargains they've picked up. One was 'Aragon oil' (I think) serum - the bottle looks just like Estee Lauder's Advanced Night Repair but has completely different ingredients. I tried some only to find the consistency what rather semen-like. Couldn't quite bring myself to smother it all over my face...

Another was something called Derma v10 which I bought as it was paraben free but doesn't seem to have done a thing.

...but for one pound!???! Should I fill a basket and just persevere and buy some bargains or will they all be a waste of money and cause a volcano to erupt on my skin?

The olive oil cream is amazing...

extremepie · 11/09/2014 23:00

I have to say their BB cream is the best one I've tried so far but maybe I've just been lucky....

A bit off thread but aldi's Q10 cream is awesome, I switched from clarins to it. All that glitters ain't gold.

They often have recognisable make up and nail brands (revlon, Sally Hansen, maybelline, Barry m, rimmel) in the little plastic bags. I don't normally take a risk on the non recognisable stuff though.

TwoAndTwoEqualsChaos · 11/09/2014 23:52

How can you tell, Magic.

TwoAndTwoEqualsChaos · 11/09/2014 23:52

?

A couple of months ago Glamour magazine had a Clinique promotion including free chubby sticks given away with the mag. Clinique chubby sticks are ok but seem to fade quickly on my lips. So i dont mind it as a freebie but i wouldnt pay the £17 retail price for one.

Aragon Oil has reminded me of this thread

Look where the nail varnish/lipsticks/eyeshadows/whatever - are in clear plastic wrappers. Look closer and you'll see they're branded.
I've had some fab Sally Hanson and Revlon stuff. I've also had some utter pap from maybelline too but for a £1 I don't mind :)

TwoAndTwoEqualsChaos · 12/09/2014 21:52

Carbe, I felt like a right muppet today when I went in and saw the brands through the plastic but I picked up two bottles of Sally Hanson nail varnish ... I am sure I read an article about a more famous brand having a new label put over the top and people discovering what they had really bought.

BobbyDazzler1 · 12/09/2014 22:00

The expensive stuff (Clinique, Estée Lauder etc. etc.) is £1 contents, £20 packaging - what's the difference?!!! Wink

CarbeDiem · 12/09/2014 22:42

Sometimes you just need pointing in the right direction. Glad you found the goodies now. I warn you though - it becomes addictive. I've got hundreds of items quite a collection from the £1 shop.

The Sally nail varnish I got was teflon tough stuff - it's honestly the best thing I've ever used on my nails for protecting them and I've tried all sorts and spent a small fortune. 2 coats of SH and no snapping or peeling at all.

Heads up for any exercisers on thread.
I have big norks so a normal bra isn't enough if I'm jumping around. Sports bra's are quite costly so I spotted some in the £1 shop (NOT poundland - the other high street one, is it poundworld?)
They are reasonable quality and wash very well. I use 2 together on top of my normal bra and it feels as supportive and keeps my breasts tight to my chest, zero bounce, the same as my £15.00 one.

You're all welcome ;) :)

waithorse · 12/09/2014 22:49

YABU if you ever thought skincare for a pound would be any good.

Darkesteyes · 12/09/2014 23:15

Carbe shame it doest work like that for a J cup. Smile

CarbeDiem · 12/09/2014 23:43

I'm an E Dark and my norks are squished in an Xlarge, they'd maybe stretch to your size, they're very elasticy (that's not even a word is it? :) )

rubyflipper · 13/09/2014 08:03

Steer clear of the Poundworld gel-effect nail varnish. The top coat is basically superglue and it started to chip after a few hours.

I agree about the Aldi Q10 moisturiser. It's the only thing I'll buy in that shop.

rainbowinmyroom · 13/09/2014 08:05

The Revlon chub sticks are great!

CarbeDiem · 13/09/2014 17:31

Thanks Ruby - I don't bother with the no name stuff anyway not when you can buy the branded goodies :)

I did try the Derma range eye revitalising roll on thingy. It was quite good and I could feel under my eyes tighten and felt fresher. They didn't have it when I wanted to buy more.
My ultimate go back to - cheapy product is original Nivea. I buy allsorts of expensive creams, I particularly like Clinique and Estee Lauder but will always have a pot of Nivea handy for night time use.
