To not always be sure if people on Baby Names are actually being serious

I just find it hard to believe that some of the OPs are seriously considering the names they're proposing in their posts. There is a thread on there at the moment and I'm Shock that anyone would consider calling a baby such a name.
And I came across an old thread yesterday where posters were asked what their children were called. If some of them were serious in their replies, it would explain a lot about some of the threads Hmm

I hope you are right - i like to look at the baby names page for a laugh!

Cereal0ffender · 11/09/2014 13:00

I agree, I live in a fairly hipster part if the world so am no stranger to ridiculous baby names but FFs at some of the names on here

I don't go on Baby Names that often, but when I do all the posts seem to fall into 3 categories for me.

1 - a worry that a name is too popular (is my child going to end up as the fourth Charlie in his class?) or doesn't go with a surname (is Richard Head really a no-no?) or doesn't go with a sibling name (does having two girls named Alex and Robin look like I actually wanted boys?)

2 - a rare checking of spelling and pronunciation

3 - that they have a leeetle background suspicion that the name they are thinking of is rather unusual

Everyone else I know just seems to go with the name they like!

SaucyJack · 11/09/2014 13:04

Not everyone wants to call their kids Josh and Emily y'know.

YouTheCat · 11/09/2014 13:08

Thurlow, I actually know someone called 'Richard Head'. He was my ds's head master. Grin

steppemum · 11/09/2014 13:12

yes, but Penguin? really?

DizzyKipper · 11/09/2014 13:14

I must be really gullible, it genuinely hadn't occurred to me that people would post on there for larks - all tis time I was just thinking that some people had very different taste in names to me. Blush

Cereal0ffender · 11/09/2014 13:16

I think they are fairly serious most of the time. I do try not to be mean but sometimes I can't help myself

gamerchick · 11/09/2014 13:16

I think that a lot of them are just posted to up their post count before they start trolling personally.

FoxSticks · 11/09/2014 13:18

I knew a Richard Head too - he was a bank manager.

AnnieLobeseder · 11/09/2014 13:18

First, TAAT. Bad form.

Second, it's obvious to anyone with half a brain that the penguin thread is a piss-take.

HTH.

Cereal0ffender · 11/09/2014 13:19

Tbf it is a thread about a whole topic

scaevola · 11/09/2014 13:19

Anyone else remember Persimmon?

PinkSquash · 11/09/2014 13:20

What's wrong wiv Penguin? Grin

Kantha · 11/09/2014 13:22

I think the 'Penguin' thread is a wind up. However, last night's 'Velvet' thread seemed genuine. Some of the replies had me LOL.

I would add

Category 4: No idea/can't agree what to call this baby that is a week old. Help.

Category 5: Someone has 'stolen' 'my' name. Or: I want to steal someone's name. Is this ok?

I love the baby names section, even when I'm not pregnant.

AnnieLobeseder · 11/09/2014 13:22

I don't know PinkMum. My two precious bundles Gnu and Koala don't know either.

Vintagejazz · 11/09/2014 13:33

It's not a thread about a thread. It's a thread about a specific topic on Mumsnet. In the same way that people often start a thread about AIBU.

And I haven't even seen the Penguin Thread (but am going to look for it now).

OP posts:
AnnieLobeseder · 11/09/2014 13:35

Okay, apologies. I thought it must have been the Penguin thread that inspired this one. Grin

Vintagejazz · 11/09/2014 13:36

Grin Just scanned through it. I swear the timing of this thread is co-incidental. It was actually a couple of other threads that got me thinking.

OP posts:
WowserBowser · 11/09/2014 13:36

I can't believe people actually believed the penguin one!

Cereal0ffender · 11/09/2014 13:37

No, this thread inspired the penguin one

123Jump · 11/09/2014 13:38

I just cannot believe the thought people give to a middle name. I mean no one ever hears or knows anyone else's middle name. Who cares?! Confused

twostucktogether · 11/09/2014 13:40

I think the Penguin one is quite funny.
It's obvioius that the poster is seeing how far MN'rs will go in their favourite pastime of being too scared to say what they think.

God forbid you offend the poster by saying the name is crap and ridiculoous. Better to say something along the lines of:

''I respect your choice - Penguin is a wonderful Name! Who are we to judge?''
idots

Vintagejazz · 11/09/2014 13:44

I also find threads entitled "Is Edward a nice name?" a bit odd.

Well in my opinion no, but in the opinion of Mrs Jones down the road yes, but in the opinion of my mum no, but in the opinion of .........

OP posts:
CallMeExhausted · 11/09/2014 13:45

I have a cousin by marriage whose daughters are Apple and Six (I shit thee not).

So yes... people actually do call their children idiotic names.
