To hate it when, on TV ...

Two characters are driving along talking to each other, and the driver keeps turning his/her head to talk to the person in the front passenger seat? I can never concentrate on what they're saying because I'm mentally shouting "Keep your eyes on the flaming road!" and waiting for the crash.

YANBU. This really annoys me too.

Drivers sawing the steering wheel back and forth like it's the dial on an old fashioned safe is also annoying and would be lethal in real life.

IRL you barely twitch the wheel unless going round a corner.

Obviously, they never lock the car. But less obviously, they never indicate either.

But then so many people IRL don't indicate either.

And if people pull up the handbrake they never push the button in. That buggers the ratchets. I realise people do this IRL too.

WowserBowser · 10/09/2014 22:49

Agree with you both!

ThirdPoliceman · 11/09/2014 02:35

We're you watching Scott and Bailey?
(I think that's what the programme was called?)

seayork · 11/09/2014 05:48

I agree - but I don't notice this as much as other things - can't remember what but I often think crazily about what people in tv land do - like they never do housework or buy a trolley full of stuff even when they have 10 kids

Eastpoint · 11/09/2014 05:57

I hate it when it's a documentary & they keep turning to the camera while driving - so scary & dangerous. It's virtually driving without due care & attention.

Sleepyfergus · 11/09/2014 06:58

Agree!!!
And another thing that gets my goat, well 2 in fact...

Masterchef - when they cook for the special judges and have to cook in the main room and then serve the judges in the side room, and they carry all their dishes through. There is no automatic door, and nobody holds the door open for them. I've not seen it happen yet, but one day someone is going to try to open the door and drop all their dishes. Why? Why put an unnecessary obstacle in the way which is nothing to do with their cooking?!

And....

Why on these competition programmes (seeing bee, great british back off etc) where each stage is held over 2 days, why does everyone wear the same clothes for both days? I can only presume it's for continuity so that we, the viewers, 'recognise' each person at each stage of the competition.

Why??!!

BrianButterfield · 11/09/2014 07:03

We were watching Jericho - one of the characters is driving along one of those straight, flat American roads that just goes through fields for miles on end. No traffic at all, but he's turning the wheel as if he's on the dodgems!

Also see people playing computer games on TV - they're always frantically pushing buttons like their life depends on it. I've seen lots of people playing games and never seen that!

Sleepyfergus · 11/09/2014 07:14

Sewing bee, and great british bake off!!

Veritata · 11/09/2014 07:20

Were you watching Scott and Bailey?

Yes! Though, to be fair, it's annoyed me for a loooong time. It's even worse in programmes like Casualty, where you know there really is a good chance they're about to crash, but then they turn out to be teasing you and actually the driver has ebola.

When characters walk into a property and leave the door open...drives me mad! Who on earth leaves an outside door open?!
Characters brushing their teeth..esp if they are talking too..yuk
Characters supposedly eating but really they are pushing food around their plates ( Big Bang Theory if the worst for this!).Also when characters waste food in a scene .eg they sit down to a meal, take a bite and then have a row so flounce off..
I need to get out more.

Pointlessfan · 11/09/2014 07:24

Totally agree about the doors in master chef! Also why doesn't anyone ever go to the toilet on tv unless it's to get beaten up/go into labour/do a dodgy deal/have heart attack or similar?

ChaosTrulyReigns · 11/09/2014 07:36

People on the tell who wear their seltbelts round their blahdy upper arm! It's meant to go around your shoulder, ffs. Not going to do do its job properly in a crash, is it? But your clothes won't look creased? Which I think might by why it's not worn properly?

ChaosTrulyReigns · 11/09/2014 07:37

OVER your shoulder, not around. TUT me.

Veritata · 11/09/2014 07:58

Yes! Same when the detectives sit down with their just-ordered drinks, one of them has an idea and they both dash out leaving those drinks untouched.

When characters smoke a cigarette after years of not smoking. No it would not taste good and they would turn green and be sick.

limitedperiodonly · 11/09/2014 08:12

No one ever uses an electric toothbrush.

"Why on these competition programmes (seeing bee, great british back off etc) where each stage is held over 2 days, why does everyone wear the same clothes for both days?"

I know this one! It's so that they can edit filler/reaction shots from Day 2 into Day 1, and shoot pickups of Day 1 dialogue if necessary.

Veritata · 11/09/2014 11:19

Another one is when they sweep up and manage to park first time in a parking space directly outside where they want to go to. If only.

I hate it on Location, location when they have a drink in front of them whilst phil or Kirsty phones through an offer. Last week the camera kept showing phils drink , half empty, then full again , then a little bit drunk. Then I wonder what they are drinking and if their drinking alcohol or not and if phil has to drive home. It does worry me.

cheerears · 11/09/2014 11:24

There's a car ad at the moment where everyone in the cars are singing their heads off - just NO!!!!

I was distracted in the SATC film where Big stands Carrie up - when she is fleeing in the car SHE DOESN'T PUT HER SEAT BELT ON!!!!
