to think that an adult shouldn't be blowing on their food to cool it down?

Just wondering.

I think it's not really ok for an adult to blow on their food rather than waiting a bit for it to cool down. DP thinks it's perfectly reasonable. AIBU?

What about those god-awful yawns that folk men do when they inhale loudly and exhale with a chokey/scratchy/scrapey/showy-offy sound - makes me all stabby

UncleT · 10/09/2014 00:06

FFS. Why can't people just be left in peace to eat their food without someone telling them they can't cool it down?? YABU.

I'm quite a slow eater so if I waited for it to cool naturally I'd still be there at bed time Blush

CKDexterHaven · 10/09/2014 03:44

I can't believe there are so many food-blowers! This is something that drives me irrationally crazy, especially if their blowy breath hits the food on my plate.

however · 10/09/2014 03:49

It's much more klassy to take a bite of a lava hot cheese sandwich and do that chewy thing with your mouth wide open and breathing in at the same time to cool it off.

however · 10/09/2014 03:49

...oh, and that vague wavy fan thingy with your hands in front of your mouth. That helps, too.

MinesAPintOfTea · 10/09/2014 04:54

Flipchart watch you're dinner companions carefully next time. I bet one ore two of them descretely pauses with their food near their lips and gently exhales to cool it.

And it works because moving air convects heat away from the surface more quickly than still air.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 10/09/2014 08:36

however - the fluttery wavy thing on your face is very versatile:

Two inches below the nose tip - cool down food in an open mouth
Two inches above the nose tip - stops women crying apparently.

2rebecca · 10/09/2014 09:25

So what are you doing on a thread about blowing on your food feathermucker?
I hate people who go on a thread about a particular subject and then get all high horsed about people talking about the thread subject and not dwelling on higher things.

TalcumPowder · 10/09/2014 09:39

Well, it's generally considered to be poor table manners for anyone over five, but I think it annoys me primarily because it suggests the person doing the blowing simply can't wait a scant minute in order to let their food cool down slightly. It reminds me of those people (usually male, in my experience) who are plunging their forks into the food even as it's still being put on the table in front of them, especially while there are still others being served, and eat so fast they have sometimes emptied their plate while those served under a minute later (I mean, not dawdlers) are still picking up their forks.

My father tears into his food like this. Despite all of us pointing out over several decades that it would be polite for him to wait for my mother (usually the only other person eating, and the cook) to serve herself, given that he's not actually starving.

(Obviously, rules do not apply if you are, literally, starving.)

TalcumPowder · 10/09/2014 09:41

Squoosh, you're starting to alarm me. I saw Nicolas Witchell on the news last night and had a vision of him nude-waving at gladioli.

UncleT · 10/09/2014 09:47

Talcum how the hell is it 'generally considered' to be bad manners when a clear majority here state otherwise? That's ridiculous.

MaidOfStars · 10/09/2014 10:37

I don't blow on food. I can't see how a short stream of body temp air is going to be that effective at cooling anything. Also, I suspect it means the blower is taking too large a forkful too quickly to their mouths, which means they are eating far too quickly for politeness...

Have no idea if my husband regularly blows or not. Either he doesn't or I've never noticed it, this suggesting that while I have reservations about it, I don't care if others do/don't.

BMW6 · 10/09/2014 10:41

Op - you are hoisting your judgy pants up on how a person eats THEIR OWN FOOD???? Seriously????

FWIW I personally HATE knuckle-crackers (the sound makes me want to throw up) so how would you feel if I told you to stop doing it? Hmm

flakeyfinancials · 10/09/2014 10:42

I have to wait for coffee to cool down and food. I have a very sensitive mouth.

BMW6 · 10/09/2014 10:44

whats more I blow on my food if it's too hot - especially if I'm giving the forkful to my dog......Grin

Thumbwitch · 10/09/2014 10:45

So long as he a) doesn't spit all over it when blowing and b) doesn't blow on your food then YABU.
If he does either a) or b) then of course YANBU.

Grockle · 10/09/2014 10:49

Have I judged him? I've acknowledged that the general consensus is that I AIBU. I'm happy to accept that Smile

I don't crack my knuckles in public because I know other people don't like it so it would be inconsiderate. I have problems with my joints and sometimes the crack by themselves, in which case I apologise to the person I am with.
