to think that an adult shouldn't be blowing on their food to cool it down?

Just wondering.

I think it's not really ok for an adult to blow on their food rather than waiting a bit for it to cool down. DP thinks it's perfectly reasonable. AIBU?

And I encourage DS1 to gently (wishful thinking) blow on his food because he's very sensitive to anything above body heat.

splendide · 09/09/2014 20:57

Muslims shouldn't blow on their food.

Grockle · 09/09/2014 20:58

Why shouldn't muslims blow on food?

I'm a knuckle cracker but not a food blower. Noisy eating, chomping, slurping is a deal breaker for me. I'm not about to dump DP because he blows on his food.

I do it. My husband does it. We have taught our son to do it. My mother taught me to do it. So YABU and a bit odd.

I like hot food. Food takes time to eat to savour. If you started once it all had cooled down, it would be stone cold by the end of the dish. The blowing method ensures that your food it at least warm by your last mouthful. Very odd post.

AmIthatHot · 09/09/2014 21:01

Fucking hell. Someone thinks blowing on your food is "rude" Wink. Who knew

squoosh · 09/09/2014 21:03

'I'm not about to dump DP because he blows on his food.'

I wasn't suggesting you dump your husband! What I meant is that it's fine to dump someone for trivial reasons early on in the relationship.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 09/09/2014 21:04

Noticeable blowing is an issue in public but not tactful low profile blowing or any blowing is acceptable if its a child.

But yabvvu to police his behaviour on something so minor when he is in his own home

MsAnthropic · 09/09/2014 21:07

I don't think I blow on my food. I know it's not ideal etiquette, but out of all the table manners rules to break, this genuinely is by far the most innocuous IMHO (hence my surprise at someone calling it disgusting) - it doesn't make a noise or inconvenience anyone else, nor does it show fellow dinners chewed up food or the contents of your mouth etc.

ChangelingToday · 09/09/2014 21:09

Yabu

GoringBit · 09/09/2014 21:12

Grockle, I was always told to take a little from the edge or top while the rest cools down, so I get what you mean.

I'm not fussed about food-blowing, but OH's sister-in-law eats volcanically hot soup by sucking it noisily off her spoon, which gives me the heebee-jeebees. She does it with tea, too. Hmm

Muddledandunsure · 09/09/2014 21:13

Whilst on the subject, does anyone else call blowing on your food fuffing it? When I told my Dp to give his too hot dinner a fuff he looked at me liked I'd sprouted horns.

Leeds2 · 09/09/2014 21:18

YANBU.

Absolutely not.

TheBloodManCometh · 09/09/2014 21:18

YABU.

But now Mumsnet has given me yet another thing to feel paranoid about in public.

AnyFucker · 09/09/2014 21:20

what ?

some of you would hate my H then

he does a sneaky blow on his cuppa tea before he takes every sip

squoosh · 09/09/2014 21:21

Does he say 'aahhhhh' after every sip of tea?

That's a hanging offence in my book.

GoringBit · 09/09/2014 21:23

A sneaky blow is fine Grin but when OH's SIL lets loose, it's like a tropical storm breaking. But she's lovely and we all have our quirks...

AnyFucker · 09/09/2014 21:24

he does an aaah ust after the first sip Smile

AnyFucker · 09/09/2014 21:24

Just*

GoringBit · 09/09/2014 21:25

Muddled that's a new one to me, I'm now grappling with fuffing and foofs.

Grockle · 09/09/2014 21:25

For some reason, blowing on tea doesn't bother me. Food yes, tea no. Odd. I'm quite happy to accept that IABU. I am quite unreasonable about other things. Grin

I've never heard of fuffing but I like that and shall use it in future.

OP posts:
Grockle · 09/09/2014 21:26

And an 'aaaahh' with your first sip of tea is fine. Like the big sigh of relief I do when I've needed a wee for ages and finally get to go. It's satisfying.

5Foot5 · 09/09/2014 21:27

Is it just me who thinks this is not the best way to cool it down anyway?
If I have food that is extremely hot and I don't want to burn my mouth then I find that cutting the food up a bit or stirring it lets out the heat and is a much more effective way of cooling it.

squoosh · 09/09/2014 21:27

I will grant him a pardon seeing as there's only one 'aaaah'.

I have a colleague who 'aaahhhs' after every sip. You'd swear each cuppa was as precious as that glass of beer John Mills downs in Ice Cold In Alex.

maddening · 09/09/2014 21:28

Do whatever you want with your own food but other people's meals are non of your business.

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 09/09/2014 21:29

anyfucker I'd love to meet your DH :)

Blowing gently on a forkfull of food is fine, blowing on the whole plate not so much.

Of course you don't wait for it all to cool down, otherwise the rest is too cold. God there are some weird people about, most of them on MN Grin I'm relieved to find lots of 'normal' people in tonight :)
