Or is it seen as acceptable now?

Actually, scrap that - I do judge - but men just as much as women I'm afraid. I don't distinguish. They're just horrible.

Nicola19 · 09/09/2014 23:02

I have one on outward bit of my shoulder. I can hide it easily but if I am wearing a sleeveless top I sometimes feel self conscious. It's been there twenty years and mostly I like it. My guilty secret is that I inexplicably like solo tattoos on people but not multi.

Daisychain5 · 09/09/2014 23:39

I definitely look down on anyone with a tattoo...can't bear them.

Deftones · 10/09/2014 04:47

I've not been looked down on for my visible forearm tattoos, as far as I'm aware, probably due to the fact I'm built like a brick shit house and likely to confront the judge Wink

Each to their own, I judge others for things I'm not keen on, everyone does

FranksWife · 10/09/2014 08:12

Tattoos look good on the beach in a bikini, not walking down the isle in white.

Trollsworth · 10/09/2014 08:16

Society looks down on everyone with visible tattoos, including on the neck, face, arms, shoulders, hands and feet. It's not a gendered issue.

Goldenlab · 10/09/2014 08:50

Both my daughters have tattoos. Both worked in 'city' Jobs, but tattoos are not visible under suits. Neice's fiancé has both full sleeves. He's a surgeon.

ItWasMyOwnSilence · 10/09/2014 09:00

I don't like tattoos but I don't look down on people with them unless they're really ugly or football tattoos. I admire people with them for expressing their individuality.

RonaldMcDonald · 10/09/2014 09:10

depends on whether they are shit tattoos or not
it is a class judgement usually

ScarlettlovesRhett · 10/09/2014 09:14

Agree that they're very dating.

In the 80s, they weren't mainstream; late 80s/early 90s, women everywhere getting rose tattoo on boob ; early to mid 90s was 'ironic' cartoon character at top of arm; mid to late 90s was black "symbol" on back of shoulder,or something arty round pierced belly button; post millennium was a tramp stamp on lower back or 'tribal' or Celtic band on arm; then there were quotes or names; then stars or suchlike on ankles or wrists; now it's sleeves.

Sleeves are the worst imo - they just can't be covered unless you wear clothes with sleeves. I don't 'look down' on people with tattoos, they are so mainstream now and not the least bit 'edgy' - the shock value has long since passed, that boat sailed in the 90s along with body and tongue piercings imo.

ScarlettlovesRhett · 10/09/2014 09:19

By "sleeves being the worst", I meant the worst to regret or be dated by - I have no opinion on tattooed people because it's so usual now.

The only thing I detest is facial and front of neck ones tbh.

Lucyccfc · 10/09/2014 09:39

I don't have any tattoo's and really don't like them on men or women - each to their own.

My sister had her baby's name on the inside of her wrist and she asked me what I thought, but then wasn't happy with my response. She knows I don't like tattoo's, so why ask me for my opinion? I said it looked really common and not in the least bit tasteful. I did ask her why she felt she wouldn't be able to remember her babies name and had to have it put on her wrist?

I have never judged anyone else's tattoo's, but if you ask me my opinion on a specific tattoo, I am not going to lie.

PoppySeed2014 · 10/09/2014 10:04

I don't judge anyone (they're not in any way lesser for having inked their skin) but yuck. Tattoos. Eurgh. Skin is beautiful, tattoos never are (IMHO).

PoppySeed2014 · 10/09/2014 10:05

(I probably would think twice about hiring someone with lots of tattoos however...)

Katy1368 · 10/09/2014 10:22

I don't like tattoos at all on anyone, I just feel they are a bit shouty. Your skin is the largest organ physiologically speaking and I really feel you should look after it, for me that doesn't include tattoos.

However one of my best friends has a number of arm tattoos and several very good consultant surgeons/ anaesthetists I have worked with have very large arm tattoos so no I wouldn't leap to judge a person for that. I would just disagree with their original decision to have them.

specialsubject · 10/09/2014 10:42

your call. I think all tattoos look awful so I don't have any, but if you have them I'll just ignore them.

I won't say 'that's nice' because I don't think that, I won't say 'that looks ridiculous' because that is rude. If I'm honest, I would assume you were a bit of a sheep-like crowd-follower when you had them done, not an individualist.

but I don't know when you had them done and I don't know what you are like now from your tattoos.

roundandround51 · 10/09/2014 10:47

Not sure I look down on people with visible arm tattoos but I do think they might be rough.
Also think they always look a bit dirty.

RumPunch · 10/09/2014 10:51

I've either never been judged or just haven't noticed. I've got loads. Bloody love 'em.

ScarlettlovesRhett · 10/09/2014 10:55

Do you know what would be an 'individual tattoo' now, something 'different from the herd' - an anchor on your forearm!

It's not been a 'thing' since Popeye, so must be due a comeback!

Sleeve tattoos are very common (as in usual) now, not at all individual or creative.

[Not directed at OP or anyone in particular, just a general musing]

cheerybear · 10/09/2014 11:21

Thanks for your responses and they're interesting (both sides) Xx

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 10/09/2014 11:27

I've not noticed anyone judging me for mine, its relatively new, so can compare with before. No more than they already do for me being 'alternative' and pierced (weird) or a disabled parent (selfish) anyway.

squoosh · 10/09/2014 11:29

'Fraid not! All those sailor jerry tattoos have been very popular for a while now.

ScarlettlovesRhett · 10/09/2014 12:57

Boooo!

I'm so last century Squoosh Sad

I did say they were due a comeback though!

PlinkingViolet · 13/09/2014 09:05

The permanence is the problem - i simply dont believe that anyone knows without doubt that they wont look at their tattoo one day and wish they had a different design or that it was just gone. You wouldnt have a permanent hairstyle, would you?

CatKisser · 13/09/2014 09:13

My friend teaches in a secondary school in a very deprived town in the NE. He said that recently there's been a spate of 15/16year old boys coming in with tattoos up their necks to their ears! And there's fuck all the school can do/are doing about it.
I can't be arsed with judging the kids or the parents but
A) how bloody irresponsible of whatever tattoo shop is doing this to children and
B) these decisions will affect those boys for the rest of their lives. Neck tattoos look awful and limit jobs you will be considered for.
