To think society looks down on women with visible arm tattoos

Or is it seen as acceptable now?

I think they're awful and look very ugly. I also think there are those who would judge in the professions, particularly older colleagues.

If you work in a professional environment it's not going to send a good signal. Would you really want to be forced to wear long sleeves every single day?

I have to say as a lawyer I would not expect a colleague to have visible tattoos - sorry.

hellsbellsmelons · 09/09/2014 10:24

I'm with Hakluyt and Japanese
But wouldn't society be dull and boring if we were all the same and liked all the same things?
Live and let live.

Get one of those fake ones and wear it for a little while out and about and see what kind of reaction you get. You get some quite good ones.
See if you really can live with covering your whole arm up every day even in the middle of a hot summer!
Your body - your choice!

atticusclaw · 09/09/2014 10:24

What's the profession?

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 09/09/2014 10:27

YANBU - I think society as a whole does look down on and judge women with visible tattoos, particularly very large tattoos.

Plenty of individuals don't judge but I think they are in a minority personally, and while tattoos have become more socially acceptable in recent years, a sleeve tattoo is I think viewed as more extreme and is definitely judged.

That said, personally I don't like them so that will obviously influence my views. I have to work very hard to ensure that I don't pre-judge people when I see them and I think they are definitely a barrier in some professions.

MissBattleaxe · 09/09/2014 10:30

Whilst I applaud people's right to self expression and would do anything to uphold that, I don't like the look of tattoos. To me it looks like graffiti and I just don't think they look nice at all. Personal taste and all that.

poolomoomon · 09/09/2014 10:30

I think more people have one now than don't. There isn't any official way of knowing that statistic but just at a guess. It's way more common now to have a tattoo than it was even ten years ago. I feel like a freak for not having one tbh, people always act surprised when I say I don't have nor do I want one.

So with that in mind, no I don't believe they are looked down on at all. It's just so normal now. Most people would probably still be taken aback by a tattooed face but I don't think most even notice arm ones anymore. They're everywhere.

cheerybear · 09/09/2014 10:30

I wear a suit ever day for work so actually my arms aren't ever on show (although I know I oculd take my jacket off, I never do as I'm always cold)my employer wouldn't even know. I have got 9 tattoos already but they're on my body so not seen unless I show them.

I must admit it is difficult to take someone seriously when she or he has visible tasteless or stupid tattoos.
Ok, you love your mum, but having "My Mum" written on your neck...Confused

GooseyLoosey · 09/09/2014 10:43

If you had a visible tattoo and I was your employer, I think I would judge.

I would consider that you valued your own individuality more than fitting in within my workplace and making a good impression on clients. I would consider that you put self-expression before career. You might be able to dispel that view, but I think you would have to work at it.

I would not make any judgements about whether you were a good person.

knickernicker · 09/09/2014 10:44

I think I'm the only person in the world without a tattoo. I don't like them. However artistic they are, to me they just look like a tattoo. I don't judge because with the number of types of people who have them I'd have make multiple judgements.

squoosh · 09/09/2014 10:47

If the tattoo looks like a homemade/prison effort I might be wary but I wouldn't say I look down on women with tattoos on their arms, or elsewhere.

Tattoos are so standard these days, it will soon be more unique to be un-inked.

knickernicker · 09/09/2014 10:48

Middle class people also have tattoos www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/society/scientists-discover-most-middle-class-tattoo-2013012557377

WitchWay · 09/09/2014 10:50

I think they look awful, especially names, but hey, do what you like. I do think very young people getting them might not have thought how they might be judged later when looking for jobs etc.

sunflower49 · 09/09/2014 10:51

Yes, it does. My family hate tattoos, I don't have any but some close friends of mine do and I've found myself trying to convince my parents that it doesn't make them stupid or rough or anything.

Not the same subject but my Father once told me that anybody with piercings is stupid.

I reminded him that my Mother's ears are pierced.
'Not ears!'

Why? I had my navel pierced at the time, and two microdermals, giving me as many holes in me as my Mother, just in different places. Society is judgmental.

fromparistoberlin73 · 09/09/2014 10:51

and your point is?

but YANBU, its true!

squoosh · 09/09/2014 10:53

I do wonder about the craze for sleeves of tattoos. A few years ago the trend was for a Celtic band or a dolphin, easy enough to ignore if you got bored of it. Trying to ignore an arm full of tattoos that you regret getting will be a bit more difficult.

Tattoo removal is crazy expensive.

cherrybombxo · 09/09/2014 10:53

I have a good job, a decent salary and nice flat. I also have tattoos on my arms, a full chest piece and both legs almost covered. The only people I've been looked down on by are rude, judgmental, uptight old ladies who need to mind their own business and worry about their own lives.

Sazzle41 · 09/09/2014 10:57

Personally i dont like them, skin is beautiful, why mutilate it? They look rather odd when skin has stretched or wrinkled and, I think its a class thing. You'd never see the girls or men on Made in Chelsea with one. And some people definitely have a look at me i am hard thing going on with them which is .. sad.

cheerybear · 09/09/2014 11:00

I'm nearly 40, I would have decent art work, but I want to do it whilst I still look young enough to pull it off, it wont to too much longer before I am wearing cardis to hide underarm bat wings. I am still slim and have okish arms and think I would only have a few more years to do it and get enjoyment from it. I have never regretted my other tattoos, but i can cover them. My husband doesn't like tattoos but he is supportive and thinks I would regret if I didn't do it. The only thing that concerns me is he's got a a good job that involves going to balls etc, I would look slightly different to the other ladies tha attend these.

WaitingForMe · 09/09/2014 11:01

I think it depends on how you wear them. I dated a bloke with a full sleeve but he wore thick shirts for work. It was seriously hot seeing him arrive looking professional and knowing what was underneath.

So for me they are incompatible with looking professional. I don't see that as a reason not to have them but I think you need to think about how you'll dress.

JennyOnTheBlocks · 09/09/2014 11:02

Question for those on thread who judge someone with a tattoo

If you were faced with identical twins working in the same place of work, and only one was tattooed, would you judge, and why?

eurochick · 09/09/2014 11:04

I don't like them but wouldn't look down on someone with them beyond thinking they are a bit of a sheep as so many people have tats these days.

LiviaDruscillaAugusta · 09/09/2014 11:04

I have nine tattoos, but because of my job, they are all covered by clothes. Every time I have had a new one, that has been my first priority. My tattoos are something that I wanted to have done, but that doesn't mean that I want to risk limiting my choices.

MaliceInWonderland78 · 09/09/2014 11:05

I do judge (if I'm honest). I went into a local tesco recently and the lady there had visible arm tattoos. My brothers wife is covered in them (as is my brother). To me they look awful, but if we all liked the same thing......

I should say, I have a tattoo on my arm, and my wife has a non-visible one on the top of her hip. No desire to get anymore, and wouldn't encourage my kids to get one anywhere unless it was very discrete.

Scarletohello · 09/09/2014 11:07

Actually some of the people in Made in Chelsea DO have tattoos! That's how ubiquitous they are now ( ooh always wanted to be able to use that word..) :)
