Common household items that are pointless...

Ok, the ruined designer washing up bowl which has popped up all over again has just prompted me to ask…what is the point of having a washing up bowl? We used to have one, then moved house and now don't bother with one. We just use the sink, which, to be honest, is much easier for washing up the dishes. It was a revelation!

What common 'essentials' do most of us have, which actually aren't essential at all?

I like my washing up bowl. When dh bashes a glass or bowl against the side of the hard ceramic sink it breaks. When he bashes out against a plastic washing up bowl it doesn't. saves me a fortune.

bogeyface please tell me what you use your food processor for - I have this [http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/household-appliances/small-kitchen-appliances/food-]preparation/food-processors/kitchenaid-5kfp0925bac-2-1-food-processor-almond-cream21500941-pdt.html] and never use it as I find stuff just clumps in the seal at the top!

sovery I love you!

Having always struggled with cutting burnt pizza I had never thought of using scissors!

Genius!

(mind you, sometimes, when I've forgotten it cooking a lump hammer to shatter it would be more apt)

I have lot's of GU pudding glass dishes, I kept them as with everything you think they might come in handy some time and never do.
I am having a new kitchen fitted and want to get rid of all pointless items in my kitchen. Is there any really good things that these dishes can be used for? of should I just chuck them out along with other pointless items?

angeltulips · 06/09/2014 15:27

I am baffled that people find garlic presses useless. The garlic press is one of the most used implements in our house, to the point that I have bought a second one (so the first one can take a spin in the dishwasher without having to run it everyday) - it gets used every single day may be addicted to garlic

I felt like a grown up when I bought my first garlic press.

TryingNotToLaugh · 06/09/2014 15:37

We use our GU dishes for loads of things. Putting dips etc out. For little treat bowls when we're having a movie n sweets. For portioning out cheese when have pasta so there's no fighting. For a tea bag receptacle when making tea. Even as ramekins when I, er... need ramekins.

I actually suffered through 4 more GU puddings so I could have a full set. Grin

The most useless thing in our house actually has to be the gas fire. We have lit it only once in the 5 years we've lived here and although it's very nice to look at, I hate dusting it. It has to go I think.

FreakinScaryCaaw · 06/09/2014 15:37

LL12 just recycle the GU dishes. Go on you can do it Wink Freecycle anything you don't really need.

I love my garlic press. Bought a good one years ago as was sick of crappy ones. Zyliss one.

Got rid of breadmaker, dp makes it by hand. Slow cooker is fantastic. I made savoury mince in it yesterday that tasted so lush. Cheap cuts of meat cook lovely in it.

You do need different chopping boards for hygiene reasons.

TryingNotToLaugh · 06/09/2014 15:40

I have that garlic press freakin. Did it come with a little blue cleaner thingy? I need a new one of those, but without the press. It's a pig to clean without it.

LL12 · 06/09/2014 17:48

I will try and recycle the GU dishes I think, only problem is my husband is terrible hoarder and if he sees me getting rid he will probably try and keep them while saying his usual "You never know when we might need these".

I will not give up!

LL12 · 06/09/2014 17:50

Oh God, I've just thought of something to use those dam GU dishes for, a spoon rest for my new kitchen.
I must be stronger

shebird · 06/09/2014 17:50

Grape scissors
Parmesan grater

CrystalQueen · 06/09/2014 17:58

my parents have the pepper mill with a light. Clearly in case of a power cut they still want to season their food.
I miss a washing up bowl (but we have a sink with a small second sink bit that half finished tea can be poured down while the rest of the dishes are in the sink).
We have an entire set of drawers in the kitchen we can't open because the washing machine gets in the way.

SquirrelWearingATrilby · 06/09/2014 18:00

orange peeler

SquirrelWearingATrilby · 06/09/2014 18:02

popcorn maker
juicer
sandwich toaster
candy floss maker

seriously, why??

KillmeNow · 06/09/2014 18:06

Orange peeler! That's what it is !

Miriama · 06/09/2014 18:18

I have a globe bar which I have a husband who loves a gadget! And is a terrible hoarder of stuff for a rainy day!

feelingmellow · 06/09/2014 18:23

My dh once bought me cherry stoner because they were on offer! It's been unused in the cutlery drawer for about 10 years

specialsubject · 06/09/2014 18:25

dish drainer an essential here (not everything can go in the dishwasher) - it is the tea towel that is an unused item. That's what evaporation is for.

agree - no clutter on beds. Duvet and the pillows that get used. Why have loads of shite that you then need to move on to the floor?

after a couple of house moves there really isn't much left in the 'WTF did I buy that for?' department. Although one or two such have sneaked in as presents and I feel that it would be rude to get rid of them.

Flipflops7 · 06/09/2014 18:35

Dish washer.

dementedma · 06/09/2014 18:43

Don't have a microwave, dishwasher, tumble dryer. Don't use fabric conditioner.
Love my zester, stick blender,cafetiere

HappyAgainOneDay · 06/09/2014 18:57

Blondiemix I use a small funnel to fill our salt cellars and a larger funnel to fill a bottle with homemade lemonade. How would you do those or similar tasks without a funnel. Do you use a pie funnel?

BravePotato · 06/09/2014 19:07

Microwave is useless

Luckily it exploded when our babysitter tried to make popcorn in it (and put it on full whack fir 10 mins Shock, filling the house with smoke. Kids were delighted Grin

Not felt the need to replace it.

I absolutely adore my rice cooker though!!!

Nappy sacks are used as body bags when the cat brings us "presents" home
