Ok, so I've been a wimp and name changed in case I get totally flamed.

www.suffolk.police.uk/newsandevents/newsstories/2014/september/hardhittingvideolaunched.aspx

The motorcyclist was travelling at 100mph past a busy junction. I watched this video and thought, as a car driver, this could easily happen to me. What an horrific thing to have on your conscience.

What if it had been a child crossing?

The FB comments are fairly evenly split.

It's a very sad and shocking video. He was driving far too fast though Sad I feel for him (what a waste), his family and the car driver.

As someone has already said the motorcyclist overtook a car as the car started to turn - he/she may have done his/her looking while the motorcyclist was behind the car.

Slow down people (car drivers too).

JCDenton · 04/09/2014 22:20

Even if the car driver had seen the bike, he is very likely to have underestimated the speed of approach. The take home message is don't risk a turn if you aren't absolutely sure of the speed of approach.

Yep, I know the car shouldn't have gone but watch how much ground the bike covers in the two seconds before the collision.

saintlyjimjams · 04/09/2014 22:21

If the car had turned a second later the motorcyclist could quite easily have killed car occupants too.

scattered · 04/09/2014 22:23

For those interested in the outcome for the driver, it's here: www.edp24.co.uk/news/a47_death_crash_driver_disqualified_1_3523497
The front of that car is completely obliterated :(

It's a sad video.

Mintyy · 04/09/2014 22:24

If the motorcyclist was doing 100mph on a single carriageway then he was to blame, surely? He wasn't in a position to take evasive action if someone else on the road does something unpredictable, which is what being an experienced road user is all about.

saintlyjimjams · 04/09/2014 22:28

Gosh that sentence is harsh on the car driver - I do think driving at 97mph is a pretty big mitigating circumstance and had he hit the car a metre back any passenger could quite easily have been killed.

TeaAndALemonTart · 04/09/2014 22:30

That's awful to watch.

He was going way too fast and had no time to brake.

AppleAndMelon · 04/09/2014 22:31

Actually that's not strictly true - my cousin wasn't speeding and a car pulled out not having seen him. Whatever the circumstances, it's heartbreaking for everyone and extremely courageous of the family to talk and release the footage.

Mintyy · 04/09/2014 22:33

Message of the video appears to be that motorists should stop to consider the possibility that a motorcyclist might be hurtling towards you at 100mph on a single carriage road (ie. in the opposite direction of travel).

Well, I think that's unrealistic. I hope the family have released it in the hope that other motorcyclists will not be as reckless.

furcoatbigknickers · 04/09/2014 22:37

I feel sorry for all involved. I will defintley be more aware after watching that. So sad. Thanks to the family for sharing.

Mintyy · 04/09/2014 22:38

The more I think about it the more disgruntled I'm becoming. It smacks of victim blaming to me.

KneeQuestion · 04/09/2014 22:40

David Holmes was undoubtedly going too fast.

But...this sort of scenario happens so often, even when the motorcyclist is within speed limits.

but where is the campaign to motorcyclists, saying 'think car'? They have a responsibility on the roads too

Motorcyclists do 'think car', they have to. Their lives depend on it.

As someone has already said the motorcyclist overtook a car as the car started to turn - he/she may have done his/her looking while the motorcyclist was behind the car

Yes. but that is part of the problem, the driver was looking for cars and not bikes.

Its very sad and Davids Mum is very brave for putting this out there.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/09/2014 22:41

mintyy, what does the opposite direction of travel have to do with it? Confused

Everyone coming towards you on a single-carriageway road will be in the opposite direction to travel.

And I do think people should consider the possibility that other drivers are too fast - simply because it's scary.

But I agree, the driver probably couldn't have hoped to process how fast that guy was coming anyway. Sad

5madthings · 04/09/2014 22:43

This is just up the road from me and my partner goes this way to work everyday. It's a very dodgy turnout and he always uses the alternative which is a roundabout, which means driving further.

He says evvery day he sees people taking risks at that turn. It gets very busy and people end up waiting ages and so they take the risk and try to go in a smaller gap between traffic.

It's awful.

saintlyjimjams · 04/09/2014 22:44

I do have think bike in my head quite a lot (my uncle used to be a biker, and used to drive too fast, and was sometimes hit - actually on one occasion in a similar way to this - although he was within the speed limit at the time)

But even with think bike in my head I think I might struggle to see a bike travelling at 97mph behind a car. It's easier to think bike effectively if they're at the speed limit (did someone say the speed limit there was 40 mph? - even if 60mph that's a huge difference)

5madthings · 04/09/2014 22:45

Sorry but knowing the turning and the stretch of road it was the drivers fault. Yes the motorcyclist was going too fast but the car driver would have caused an accident even if the motorcyclist was going slower.

Mintyy · 04/09/2014 22:46

Its not as dangerous going at fast speeds on a motorway (where everyone is going in the same direction of travel) because there are fewer opportunities for people to cut across your path when turning off the road. All the road junction are signposted well in advance and everyone turns off on the left. So the other road users can more or less predict what other people are going to do ... up to a point.

Besides which, I doubt there are any single carriageway roads in the country where there is a speed limit of over 50mph, so on such a road your fellow road users are not expecting very fast moving vehicles, they don't even make allowances for them in their subconscious.

5madthings · 04/09/2014 22:46

The speed limit is 60 on that road, locally it is known as a horrible turn out.

Notacs · 04/09/2014 22:47

Quite honestly I do get sick of motorbikes - sorry.

Just about every single one I encounter goes too fast, drives too close, weaves in and out of traffic and as others have said, don't "think car."

I really really do feel for this man - but 100 mph is ridiculous even on a motorway. On that sort of road, on a bike, overtaking - I don't know how he got to age 38 to be honest.

KneeQuestion · 04/09/2014 22:47

5madthings, my family live near there too and that echoes what they have said about that bit of the road too.

mollypup · 04/09/2014 22:47

I will probably get flamed however I think the fault very largely rests with the motorcyclist here. The car had no real chance of avoiding him once it started moving, that was after the motorcyclist came out of absolutely nowhere, past umpteen cars at 100mph.

You can't account for every possible scenario whilst driving, I don't the think driver could have done much else in this situation!

That being said, it is extremely sad and I feel for all involved. It was just a terrible accident.

5madthings · 04/09/2014 22:49

I am so relieved there is now a roundabout a bit further up and dp can avoid having to use that turn. He used to have to turn that way everyday.

It is a horrible stretch of road and turning, not uncommon in Norfolk roads though.

kausalya · 04/09/2014 22:49

Awful for all involved.

I do feel particularly bad for the car driver. The motorcyclist was traveling at 97mph. Totally, totally reckless and dangerous. He took a massive gamble with death and sadly lost.

I hope this is a lesson for other motorbike users.
