AIBU to not pick up my dogs poo?

Went for a walk today with the dog. He's not been out for a couple of days other than in the garden. He's been unwell and had the runs.

This morning he seemed to be feeling a bit better and was hanging about the front door so I decided to chance it. Anyway long story short. Round our local "walk route" and heading back to the house. He had an incident. There was no way I could have physically picked it up (sorry tmi) even though I do carry bags.

So I thought the best thing I could do was head home (about 6 houses away) grab a bucket and sluice it away. I did this and was heading back out with said bucket when a woman from down the road came up my drive ranting and raving that I should have picked it up. Or at least made an attempt to. I tried to explain the situation but she was having none of it. She has now flounced off, harping on about reporting me to the council.

Am I going to get a fine?!?

95% of the dog poo that isn't picked up around us is not remotely runny. That makes me angry, not some poor woman with a demented neighbour (are you her?!?) when she went out with a bucket of soapy water to clear up.

NonnyMuss · 02/09/2014 17:38

Our dog was like this, walks were a nightmare when we first got him because of unscoopable sloppy poops. Seriously contemplated taking him back to the rescue because of it in the first few weeks.

Changed him to a raw food diet and all sorted.
Don't think he has a food intolerance because he eats anything and everything we give him as leftovers just a very nervous stomach which the raw food keeps in check by constipating him a bit.

I'm always Shock at MN dog poo threads, some people seem to think the pavements should be sterilised daily!

She was on her way back with a bucket. Of course she wasn't BU. The loopy neighbour just wanted a rant and wasn't for being derailed.

evalyn · 02/09/2014 18:27

Let me get this right. You have a filthy smelly animal dog that you took out to shit liquid in a public place. And you wonder whether it's unreasonable that you didn't immediately clean it up?

Urgh. Urgh! You should hang your head in shame, not try to excuse yourself. What you did was not just unreasonable, it was filthy and horrible. Disgusting. Urgh.

How come people who own filthy smelly animals dogs don't see this? I dunno. Certainly unreasonable, though. Certainly.

FlossyMoo · 02/09/2014 18:37

Wow eva I would rather be around a filthy smelly animal that you tbh.

The OP went back and cleaned up the mess. What is so unreasonable about that?

Topseyt · 02/09/2014 18:38

Of course you were not being unreasonable. You actually went back with a bucket of water to wash it away. There is nothing more you could have done.

I have two dogs. I always pick up after them when we go out. However, you can get the occasional unexpectedly splodge, in which case you can only do your best. Kitchen roll can help but there may still be a smear which is just unavoidable if you are not in a position to sluice it down with water.

If splodgy ones occur at home in my garden I lift what I can in a large bag, but there is no option for the rest apart from hosing it.

I take it that those who say that you should always be able to clear up a squit completely have tried it??? In an ideal world that would be possible, but it isn't practical or realistic because in order to go out prepared for every eventuality us dog owners should carry not just poo bags (I always have plenty), but perhaps a full watering can, a long stretchy hose pipe to attach to fire hydrants, newspapers, a bucket and mop plus spray to disinfect and sterilise the entire footath??!! If we tried to carry all of that lot then it would be quite a look, I am sure. Confused

Some very sanctimonious and unrealistic answers given here from a couple of posters.

MrsRaegan · 02/09/2014 18:44

Oh piss off Eva. My filthy smelly animal is a lot cleaner than some humans. And I'd rather be around him than you.

But please excuse me I'm off to hang my head in shame as per your advice Hmm

JohnCusacksWife · 02/09/2014 18:45

evalyn, you're a little ray of sunshine aren't you?

Topseyt · 02/09/2014 18:46

Evalyn, I have seen some pretty disgusting messes that have been left by humans and not cleaned up - puddles of puke, urine from drunks, litter, fly tipping, all manner of crap.

It is those people who should hang their heads in shame, not someone who has made every effort to clear up after her dog, and more effort than many.

You may be from the anti-dog brigade. You are entitled to your opinion but do not please do not tar all responsible dog owners with that brush.

FlossyMoo · 02/09/2014 18:59

I work in the city centre and every Monday morning waiting for us in our door way ( I work for a very well known charity & the building has our signs everywhere) there is a either a turd, a pool of piss/puke and sometimes all 3 and all are human.

I will never understand some filthy smelly people who have access to toilets unlike animals.

hmc · 02/09/2014 19:03

I had this once. I was near an acquaintances house so fortunately was able to knock on the door and request a bucket of water

evalyn · 02/09/2014 19:09

Yes, all you dog lovers, it's horrible and disgusting when people do it. Couldn't agree more. What I don't understand is that you can't see that it's equally as horrible when a dog does the same. I just don't get it.

I don't blame the dog. It's just an animal. It's you lot that are horrible, imo.

We make our children - our children ffs - wear nappies to keep their shit away from bothering other people. But it's OK to let a dog do it just on the ground, anywhere? Give me a break. Unreasonable? Yes, unreasonable.

hmc · 02/09/2014 19:10

Ignore folks - she is being deliberately goady (yawns)

MrsRaegan · 02/09/2014 19:12

Totally agree hmc

OP posts:
FlossyMoo · 02/09/2014 19:15

Agree hmc

Is your dog feeling better Mrs?

MrsRaegan · 02/09/2014 19:21

I think so, thanks Flossy he's had a bit to eat and he's been for a wee. Fingers crossed he's over the worst. Poor pooch.

OP posts:
FlossyMoo · 02/09/2014 19:22

I hate it when mine gets sick. It's not often but he always looks so sad and forlorn.

onedogatoddlerandababy · 02/09/2014 19:22

YANBU. I also really don't get the fear some people seem to have about germs from dog poo outside...you're outside, there's tonnes of shit from all sorts of animals out there, not to mention the residue from all those Friday/Saturday night pisses some men have to have on the pavements. Do you have shoes for one use only?? ConfusedGrin

Ours gets runny poo occasionally (much less now she's not on James Wellbeloved) but mostly from scavenging food that some filthy dirty humans think it's ok to just lob in the hedges. FFS.
I usually have some kitchen roll in the dog walking bag just in case.

grocklebox · 02/09/2014 19:45

I don't know what shithole you wander around in, but I dont parade daily through animal faeces or human piss Hmm

zeezeek · 02/09/2014 20:00

Sorry to hijack the thread, but saw some people with good diet advice....

My retriever often has diarrhea and generally smelly poos and can fart for England - he has a mixture of dried Baker's type food and Butchers meat. He also has a selection of crap picked up in garden or on walks (we've treated him with lung worm prevention) and also from the DDs. His digestive system is disgusting...anyone with any ideas?

Oh, and we pick up the poo. Take bags and also a wad of kitchen roll for the runny ones.

Shakirasma · 02/09/2014 20:15

Zee

I would stop the wet food and change him onto a different, good quality dry food. Skinners Field and trial do a sensitive option that is loads cheaper than the James well beloved range.

PartTimeModel · 02/09/2014 20:33

So this is one of those threads where the OP asks AIBU, and then throws a strop when some people say, actually yes you are.

Why ask then MrsR?

zee I think it's wonderful you are a true responsible dog owner, prepared to clean up properly after your pet, even when it is unpleasant for you. I wish more dog owners took things as seriously and considerately as you do.

zeezeek · 02/09/2014 20:33

Thanks Shakirasma!!! I will try that. He's such a smelly boy - can't believe that it's not uncomfortable for him.

PartTimeModel · 02/09/2014 20:35

some people seem to think the pavements should be sterilised daily!
No need for the hysterics - no one is saying that.

I doubt you would be happy if your neighbours started crapping on your path/garden and didn't clean it up!

zeezeek · 02/09/2014 20:36

PartTimeModel - thank you; but the reason why we take kitchen roll with us is because we know that he has that problem. MrsR didn't and genuinely thought that her dog was better so would have been mortified, but, rightly, sorted it out rather than just leave it like some people would have.

PartTimeModel · 02/09/2014 20:39

onedogatoddler does your toddler play in your dogs shit?

Cause round here lots of children don''t have any choice - if they want to play on grass they have to deal with all the dog poo people haven't picked up and take their chances.
Or non-dog owners like me have to clean it up so small children can use the only green space around without getting coated in it.

If you can't tell the difference between dog shit and pigeon poo and the odd bit of urine, you clearly aren't picking up after your pet.
