AIBU to not pick up my dogs poo?

Went for a walk today with the dog. He's not been out for a couple of days other than in the garden. He's been unwell and had the runs.

This morning he seemed to be feeling a bit better and was hanging about the front door so I decided to chance it. Anyway long story short. Round our local "walk route" and heading back to the house. He had an incident. There was no way I could have physically picked it up (sorry tmi) even though I do carry bags.

So I thought the best thing I could do was head home (about 6 houses away) grab a bucket and sluice it away. I did this and was heading back out with said bucket when a woman from down the road came up my drive ranting and raving that I should have picked it up. Or at least made an attempt to. I tried to explain the situation but she was having none of it. She has now flounced off, harping on about reporting me to the council.

Am I going to get a fine?!?

Well YANBU as you were going to clean it up, but generally people who don't pick up their dog's poo shouldn't be allowed to keep dogs. It's utterly disgusting and you just know that now the darker evenings are about to set in that their will be a rise in those thinking they can get away with it and the wheels of my pushchair will once again get regularly covered in shit Angry

SistersOfPercy · 02/09/2014 11:40

My Mother is paranoid about this, to the point she carries kitchen roll and an squirt bottle filled with water and jeyes fluid. Hmm

Mrsjayy · 02/09/2014 11:56

Oh your mam is well prepared Grin my aunt has guide dog puppies till they are ready for training she has a full cleaning kit puts our poo bags to shame jay dog poops in the garden though he has never pood outside on a walk.

BlackeyedSusan · 02/09/2014 11:58

I was wondering in what circumstances would it not be ok to pickup poo.

kitchen roll would help wnhen further from home.. but near home I think the hot water detergent thing was better.

I am a bit biased as one disgusting owner lets their dog shit outside the school gates.

MintyChops · 02/09/2014 12:01

Some people are just twats. I once had a woman berate me for not picking up after my dog. He had peed against a lamppost. When I could get a word in I asked her to show me how to do it and she flounced off, muttering to herself.

SlideIn · 02/09/2014 12:23

We carry a water pistol for ongoing training & I have used that on a couple of occasions to wash away the worst of any runs - not ideal but more than most seem to do - YANBU, you were about to deal with it!

coffeeinbed · 02/09/2014 12:35

When my dog has a bad tummy I usually carry kitchen roll and disposable gloves on me.
But I have done the bucket of water clean up as well.

MrsRaegan · 02/09/2014 12:48

He's had tests at the vets and they all came back negative. Vet said some dogs just have a dicky tummy.

We did change his to food to another insanely expensive brand on the vets advice.

YANBU, said as a dog owner but also po faced cow when faced with others dog shit.

You didn't leave it, you were sorting it. I agree with the poster that said the woman had already decided on her rant and was too impolite/arrogant/dumb, to back down when faced with the real situation.

After a bout of sickness I always carry a roll of kitchen towel to mop up as her walks are too far to go and get a bucket and I live in abject fear of getting caught out with projectile pooping.

grocklebox · 02/09/2014 12:54

yabu. You shouldn't take a dog out in public if its shitting something you can't pick up. Its bad enough when dog owners leave dog shit everywhere, but leaving ill dogs bacteria laced liquid shit out in public is revolting.

fromparistoberlin73 · 02/09/2014 12:55

she is a dickhead, forget about her.

Aeroflotgirl · 02/09/2014 12:57

Yanbu at all, the woman's stupid, how can you pick up liquid, you can't. You did the right thing!

Aeroflotgirl · 02/09/2014 12:59

Accidents happen grockle, the dig was feeling a bit better.

Mrsjayy · 02/09/2014 13:00

I had a dog who just had a dicky tummy al her life really nothing they could find wrong just bouts of diarrhoea now and again vet recommended chappie and prescription food roll stuff when she had flair ups

Numanoid · 02/09/2014 13:04

If you tried to sluice it away then you've done all you can. You would have been unreasonable to leave a solid dog poop without picking up, but in this case there's not much else you can do!

QuintessentiallyQS · 02/09/2014 13:07

Incidentally, two of our neighbours have Schnauzers, and they have both been sick with diarrhea, and one owner was infected and hospitalized for three days. (Elderly and vulnerable)

Is this normal?

QuintessentiallyQS · 02/09/2014 13:08

But no, yanbu, you did the best you could.

However, in the interest in public health and safety, you could put up a small sign saying "My dog pooed here".

JohnCusacksWife · 02/09/2014 13:15

Was about to wonder aloud whether this could actually be a dog poo thread where everyone agreed the dog owner was in the right...then got to grocklebox's post. Ah well.....there's always next time!

Bohemond · 02/09/2014 13:18

We have a pet food company and find that some dogs get diarrhoea if they are being overfed. Try feeding much less for a few days and see how you get on.

CuddlesAndShit · 02/09/2014 13:23

I hope you showed her the bucket and said 'what do you think this is for, you dickhead' Grin

SpoonDoctor · 02/09/2014 13:33

I expect she's one of those people that dislike dogs and dog owners and was primed to take offence. Never mind the extenuating circumstances.

grocklebox · 02/09/2014 13:35

yeah, because people who have a problem with dog shit everywhere always dislike dogs. Hmm
I like dogs. I hate many dog owners though.

JohnCusacksWife · 02/09/2014 13:36

The OP was in the process of clearing it up! Give her a break....

grocklebox · 02/09/2014 13:39

clearly the other party thought otherwise.

Sparrowlegs248 · 02/09/2014 13:45

Not unreasonable at ALL!! I once popped to see my mum in her office in town. I had the dog in the car with me so took her too. About 50yrds from car to office. She stopped and shat on the pavement outside a lovely georgian house!!! I could see the office, no poo bags no phone! I was hopping about wondering what to do - decided to go to office and get something to clean up with. Owner of house came out and belated me just as i walked away. Blush
