Evening all :)

OP posts:
AFewFallenLeaves · 03/09/2014 16:34

It's not about qualifications.

In fact the level of qualifications of posters makes me more Shock tbh.

AFewFallenLeaves · 03/09/2014 16:38

Questioning propaganda is the key for all of us on all sides and no side. Soundbites and dodgy statistics are not enough.

If it's not about qualifications why comments about people voting Yes being stupid etc?

I have qualifications, I have life experience, I have done my research and am voting Yes.

I accept & respect your choice to vote no, I don't accuse you of being thick or uneducated because I disagree with you.

Odd the problem with Marx is that he wasn't very clear himself on what his vision was. For example, his theory of productivity is not easy to decipher at all as he changed his mind. This, of course, made it very difficult to apply his vision. The situation was further complicated by the fact that Marxists rapidly became Communists, and the power ambitions of some of the leading protagonists also interfered (e.g. Stalin with Stalinism). So it's not really that Marxism "is wrong" - it is just very hard to translate into reality.

BUT i do agree that having a degree does not make you intelligent. I am "clever" academically but pretty dumb when it comes to some other things.

grovel · 03/09/2014 16:41

Chocco, I may have confused someone by pointing out that there are 33 Scottish MPs sitting in WM constituencies outside Scotland.

WillPenn · 03/09/2014 16:43

But that stupidity does not inform my choice to vote Yes! I understand the risks - but am prepared to take them.

On a less controversial note (I hope) does anyone (probably more likely Yes campaigners) know where people can easily pick up some badges/car stickers?

I ask because I've given out all my spares, and quite a few people have asked but I've told them to go online or to a local Yes shop. Would most local Yes shops have them? Going online to order can take a few days to get out to you, and I imagine a lot of people won't want to wait.
It's mainly people in the street and in shops so I won't see them again, and feel a bit bad just saying "order them online". :/

FannyFifer · 03/09/2014 16:46

I'm not here to answer your questions I'm not going to change your mind.

It doesn't mean I don't have any answers, but I'm not going to go to the bother as no matter what I post you will disagree, I keep my energy & time for people that matter.

I'm off out canvassing again in 30 mins & have lots of answers for people who have questions. Grin

FannyFifer · 03/09/2014 16:47

Any Yes shop has them. :)

FannyFifer · 03/09/2014 16:49

Oh & as a nurse the majority of my work requires me to think "rationally & independently" so that is certainly not something I can be accused of being unable to do.

Numanoid · 03/09/2014 16:50

Thanks FannyFifer! :) I was going to try and get some for someone who didn't have time to visit his local Yes shop due to work shifts, but a lot of people out and about (including some at Yes events) don't know where to buy badges, etc. I'll tell them to Google their local Yes shop and try to pick up some more myself. :)

weatherall · 03/09/2014 16:51

www.opendemocracy.net/ourkingdom/john-robertson-oliver-huitson/interview-bbc-bias-bullying-and-scottish-referendum research by the University of the West of Scotland showing BBC bias. This has been very well publicised and is no surprise to anyone familiar with the debate.

Criseyde · 03/09/2014 16:52

I'm nipping back in to ask couple of questions to Odd.

Was your projected nominal GDP for Scotland based on onshore GDP only?
Wondering as even though oil is obviously volatile, there's still a need to include oil income.

I can see how easy it is to break that down to GDP per capita, but how do you apply PPP to that projected figure, given the currency issue?

AFewFallenLeaves · 03/09/2014 16:54

Fanny I've never commented about yes voters being stupid, that's clearly untrue.

And I've repeated that I can totally see why a voter would choose to vote Yes if they want Scottish Independence.

However some of the justifications I do argue with.

(Will look into energy in the UK - it's worrying but windpower is a distraction.)

deeedeee · 03/09/2014 17:03

Oh lady Cordelia! You're a gem!

Ooooh you'd love the fact that I'm one if the signitaries of an open letter from Scotland's creatives supporting independance that's due to come out at the end of the week!

The problem with most of your questions is that I don't see them as relevant, because as I've said over and over again, both sides could quote their interpretations of figures until they are blue in the face , but they'd still be arguing about the future. And the future is uncertain, it might go tits up either way. I see little point in constantly going over doom scenarios , just as I'm not boring and patronising you constantly by going over utopian
Scenarios. Both standpoints are a red herring.

Numanoid · 03/09/2014 17:06

LadyCordelia Which questions have went unanswered? As I said before, I will do my best to answer them now, if you have any. Hmm

I don't think Fanny will just be "preaching to the converted". There are still a lot of undecided voters, I met lots when out campaigning last week.

weatherall · 03/09/2014 17:08

Lady Cordelia you say your questions go unanswered so I've searched for questions on previous threads.

Was the Salmond expenses 'scandal' you referred to the Ryder cup promotion?

the Ryder cup generated £82 million for the welsh economy in 2010

So I dont think £54k in expenses is a 'scandal' when you compare those 2 figures.

OOAOML · 03/09/2014 17:11

Well, I'm not a Yes canvasser but I am a No canvasser and I doubt Fanny is heading out to preach to the converted. I would imagine that both sides are looking for undecideds to talk to in these last couple of weeks.

Both sides also do a fair amount of "preaching to the converted" which I imagine is fairly standard in political campaigning.

Without wanting to sound all pollyanna-ish, we have had a good atmosphere here recently in the main, it would be nice if we could get that back.
