I never watched it when it was actually on. I am currently re-watching to distract myself from various irritating and tedious things going on in RL. I love it, I think it's brilliant. I especially love how they write the women as being pretty much as physically strong as men (and able to beat men at boxing), but without bothering to explain the details of it. And I love the religion side of it.

But here's what bugs me:

  1. How does Adama never cotton on that his son is in love with Kara? I know he's not the most perceptive father, but come on!

  2. Why do they never replace the glass panel in the control room with something non-shattering after the first, oh, hundred times it breaks?

  3. What the fuck is meant to be going on with Lampkin and his (very dead) cat?

Thank you. Smile

Ah, I have no difficulty with imagination. Grin

Actually, that's not quite true, it puts me off when it's something truly horrible, obviously. But I don't mind someone who isn't as sexy out of character or who's dull/a bit wankery.

It does have the opposite effect, though - if I see someone who comes across as a lovely person I find it hard not to sympathize with them as a baddie.

That is a significant problem, DustBunny Grin

UsedtobeFeckless · 04/09/2014 13:08

Gah! I always find the interesting threads just when I'm about to go and do something else ...

Loved BSG right up the the last bit where it went annoyingly mental and poofed off without explaining wtf was going on with Starbuck ( Awesome - girlcrush here, too ... Grin ) The terrific dead-cat-in-a-bag lawyer guy turned up in Supernatural as Crowley and in Firefly as Badger-the-weasle ( I know, I know, I'll get my anorack )

Mal - form an orderly queue - fixing to misbehave , indeed ... Grin
Also love Jayne and his hat, and Wash and his dinosaurs and basically everything about the whole thing! Sad

DP and I are watching Babylon 5 at the moment, just finished series 2, it all looks very fuzzy and 80's hair-ish with wonky CGI but the story lines are really compelling ( No cuties either, unless you like men in rubber heads ... I seem to remember Marcus was pretty fit but he hasn't turned up yet! )

o0 · 04/09/2014 14:38

I'm going to watch Babylon 5, this thread has made me want to.

I remember watching it when it first came out but I couldn't keep up with it as it was on late past my bedtime and I kept getting caught with my wee telly on! Grin

Becca19962014 · 04/09/2014 15:13

The graphics in babylon5 were all done on an Atari computer, and for the time were actually very good, especially given how awful those computers were compared to others available and other means to generate the graphics. Sort of thing that would hook me to shows at the time as I was studying computer graphics! I stuck with it for other reasons though!!

I'm so glad for this thread, being able to hide from other stuff going on so I want to say a huge thankyou to LRD for starting it. I hope it is a long lived thread.

I thought of something else this morning, how some of the stories were actually based on the original series. I must admit being a fan of both (rare but we do exist!) did get a little confusing at times!

kickassangel · 04/09/2014 17:15

I don't feel the love for Lee Adama at all, sorry. Far too clean cut and nice boy for me.

Now, Sam Anders ...

Thurlow · 04/09/2014 17:17

Oooh yes, I liked Anders too.

Lee fits into that category of very definitely being lovely looking and of course he has the BEST guns but somehow not that hot. Maybe because he turned out to be a bit wet, in the end.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/09/2014 17:20

becca - aw, thanks! Smile It's been lovely for me too. I like chatting about this stuff.

kickass - but Anders is more 'nice' than Lee, surely? He's a collection of cliches: he's a sport star, then he becomes a resistance fighter.

I think he would be pleasant, but boring, to be married to. Which I suppose is the point.

I think Lee would be a fucking nightmare, and is a fundamentally more irritating character because he is so self-righteous, but I can get more invested in his relationship with Kara because he isn't just a pushover.

I admit, I'm primarily going for Kara in this context, however.

UsedtobeFeckless · 04/09/2014 17:45

Helo!!! Boomer's bang on the money!

Lee's too pretty, too conflicted, just too generally wet ... Anders likewise, Chief's weird, Helo's the bee's knees! He's badass, independant minded, loyal - all round fabulous. Grin

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/09/2014 17:47

Helo is pretty awesome.

I love how they write his character, so much.

I didn't watch BSG for ages because I hated the original and couldn't get past the metaphysical wibble in the remake ... Once I got my head round it all I was totally smitten, though! ( Right up till the stupid ending, bastards! )

UsedtobeFeckless · 04/09/2014 17:51

How far along are you LRD? I don't want to spoil ...

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/09/2014 17:52

I'm on something like my twentieth re-watch. Grin

Do rant about the ending if you wish, please!

OP posts:
UsedtobeFeckless · 04/09/2014 18:06

I actually had Adama down as the final Cylon skinjob ( Mrs Ty! What the hell! Why not make it the bloke who walked past in the background in the first episode! Grrr! ) as he's so bad at feelings and emoty-stuff...

The Smashing Control Room Thing is the same as The Star Trek Seat Belt Thing ( 'nuff said )

Lamkin having a dead cat following him around as a sort of past-life signifing wossname pales into insignificance next to bloody Starbuck's twice-dead-profit-can't-be-arsed-to-explain-any-more-vanish-with-enigmatic-smirk exit and the Hera-as-Mytacondrial-Eve shenanigans at the end! ( Really, really must go and put supper on ... )

Liara · 04/09/2014 21:17

I really wanted to know why the hell they didn't make mitochondrial eve black. Did they just come up with the idea halfway through?

We know little about mitochondrial eve, but we do know she didn't look anything like Hera!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/09/2014 21:24

They were terrible with race in general though, weren't they? Having the only known Cylon as Grace Park, feeding into the 'mysterious, unemotional oriental' trope.

And apparently they replaced a lot of the non-white characters in the original with women, which is dubious.

usedto -oh, no! I love that Adama isn't, despite Roslin thinking he was. I think it would have spoiled if he and Tigh both were. I love that their friendship has to deal with that.

I actually kinda like the Tigh's horrible marriage - they are awful, destructive characters but they do love each other, and I suppose you'd have to have that kind of utter arrogance and long committment to create a whole species.

I'm blatantly place, asking as I need to read this thread

I assume it's about the remake with Jamie bamber etc
I watched the whole thing in one week past year and the. Spent a couple of days feeling incredibly emotionally drained

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/09/2014 21:36

I love your name thewoman.

And yes, it is about the remake, though geekery of all kinds is going down a treat. Smile

OP posts:
kickassangel · 04/09/2014 21:45

Anders looks a bit rougher. That's all I have to say about that.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 04/09/2014 21:49

I had soo many thought and things I wanted to say while reading the thread and now I can't think of any of them

Thanks LRD
I watched ff again this weekend. it's just ... Shiny
Apparently JW is happy to make more so why won't they just bloody do it. It would be easy to write the time gap into the script. Though the Wash thing might be a problem

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/09/2014 21:50

That's perfectly fair, kickas. Grin

thewoman - well, re-read and come back and say!

I would also like to see more Firefly, though increasingly I struggle with JW.

OP posts:
UsedtobeFeckless · 04/09/2014 22:34

I'm hoping some DVDs fall through a wormhole from an alternate dimension where Firefly ran to seven series ... ( Delusional twitgurl emoticon ) I think it was the best thing JW did - and I do love Buffy and Angel - as Dollhouse was lame and Agents of Shield is taking forever and a day to get going ...

They could make Wash a zombie? They killed off the Reverend Book too - maybe just pretend the film didn't happen - or do a sort of middle-quel ( like a prequel or a sequel but in between? Hmm )

Up to S3 with Babylon 5 ... Grin Marcus has turned up and the graphics look sharper ( Thanks Becca ) All is shiney ...

UsedtobeFeckless · 04/09/2014 22:43

As for the BSG ending I have a vision of a smoke filled room at 4 am full of slumped script writers with caffine headaches trying desperately to tie up all the mad plot twists before the network pull the plug and someone sits up straight and takes his head out of his hands and says - " Why explain? We could just ... " And everyone else going - " Whatever, can we please go home now ... "

Grin

I think it had some coherence, used, but I like the picture.

I do feel sad and annoyed it was so uneven, though. Some arcs had great closure, others not. The ending with Roslin actually makes me teary.

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 04/09/2014 23:36

I quite rated SHIELD and was really glad to spot the other day that it's going to have another series. JW can certainly get over - attached to an idea though - his conviction often works (Serenity) but can get too self - involved (Dollhouse). I'm not quite sure which SHIELD will turn out to be longer term ( if it gets a longer term).
