I never watched it when it was actually on. I am currently re-watching to distract myself from various irritating and tedious things going on in RL. I love it, I think it's brilliant. I especially love how they write the women as being pretty much as physically strong as men (and able to beat men at boxing), but without bothering to explain the details of it. And I love the religion side of it.

But here's what bugs me:

  1. How does Adama never cotton on that his son is in love with Kara? I know he's not the most perceptive father, but come on!

  2. Why do they never replace the glass panel in the control room with something non-shattering after the first, oh, hundred times it breaks?

  3. What the fuck is meant to be going on with Lampkin and his (very dead) cat?

Thank you. Smile

I think because he was one of the few characters required to serve the plot rather than vice versa -- he was introduced and then he was in and out of the show for various reasons, and at some point they decided to make him a Cylon, and his own character arc got rather lost in all of that.

He cropped up on Castle in a typecast perfect-boyfriend-sidelined-by-female-lead's-longstanding-crush-on-unsuitable-male-lead role.

HoVis2001 · 31/08/2014 21:00

By the way, what was with them padding Lee out with what looked like a pillow down his front at the end of whichever season it was? I felt like that was a writers' room joke that went too far, because it just looked naff/unrealistic to me...

LRDtheFeministDragon · 31/08/2014 21:02

Yes, that was annoying. And the implication that he'd given up because he'd got married to the wrong person, I think.

Also the bastard lost it in about three seconds flat by doing a few push-ups and jogging occasionally. Hmm

(I may be taking this too seriously.)

The fat suit of sadness :(

Like Daddy Adama's moustache of sadness.

kickassangel · 31/08/2014 21:04

Oh I lovebattle star and am watching it for the first time. I remorselessly took the piss out of DH for being a nerdy geek but now really like it. Just started series 4.

Right, will read the thread now.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 31/08/2014 21:06

Grin Aw, I never thought of the fat suit/moustache similarity, but you're so right.

How many times does Adama do the symbolic shave?!

kickass - eek, don't get spoilered then!

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 31/08/2014 21:06

I think it was that (a) they wanted a sense of time's having passed, and (b) Galactica and Pegasus had failed in their one job of keeping the remnant of humanity safe from the Cylons and that had made him give up. I didn't see it as related to his marriage at all.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 31/08/2014 21:17

Ahhh, ok tort, I can buy that too.

Slight derail but Enders Game mentioned above - worth a read?

Trills · 31/08/2014 21:34

Ender's Game itself - absolutely.

The sequels - see how you liked Ender's Game first.

FlossieTreadlight · 31/08/2014 21:38

Thanks - love a bit of sci Fi geekery

FesterAddams · 31/08/2014 21:58

On the subject of Adama shaving; there's an in-joke and the mirror that he uses is from IKEA:

That made me very happy.

:o

DaddyBeer · 31/08/2014 22:44

OMG. Actual real women, on MN, talking about BG??! I've died and gone to heaven.

Motherlode.

This kind of shit makes it all worthwhile...

Don't have anything useful to add right now, been ages since I watched it. But I did catch Blood and Chrome on SyFy last week (wicked). And can highly recommended Caprica if you're a bit die-hard. Well, I liked it and Eric Stolz was very good.

Ps Baltar v interesting character, massive arc with him eventually, eventually coming full circle as a person. In the meantime, he's weak, vain and fallible, but isn't it impossible not to identify with his failings, in even the tiniest way?

Don't get me started on Caprica Six who's a very naughty girl

Well, that's one of the most postive responses I've ever got on MN!

I've not watched Caprica - I dunno why, it just doesn't quite appeal.

I know what you mean about Baltar - I adore his totally, utterly self-justifying moments. Like when he finds out about Tory and says 'I knew it! Well, not on a conscious level anyway, but subconsciously I always knew!'

Hmm Grin

Such a load of bullshit.

Oh oh happy happy. Had forgotten I'd bought BSG on iTunes. Was on old ipad so wasn't sure if it would let me have them on new one but it does!

Only have seasons 1-3 and the mini-series but that'll do nicely for now! Grin

I may be some time...

trixymalixy · 31/08/2014 23:02

I must watch this again. It's my all time favourite tv series.

DaddyBeer · 31/08/2014 23:02

Yes Baltar really is a kind of essence of humanity, you can't help but like him, sooner or later. Versus Diana, who you can't help but hate, urgggh.

I'm just remembering the first time I saw the end of series two, when Six plays that homely librarian-type (equally sexy, weird but true) and then that thing happens (not spoiling for anyone) and my heart was racing like a fucked clock! Incredible!

Finding this thread easily the highlight of my day. And on bloody AIBU too! Good work LRD.

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 31/08/2014 23:20

Need to watch again, haven't seen it in a couple of years. Bloody brilliant though.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 31/08/2014 23:22

Oh, no, no way is Baltar 'essence of humanity'! Though I'm not sure anyone is, in there.

Who's Diana? Having brain blank. And I can't remember the end of series 2 with the six. God I'm useless.

OP posts:
kickassangel · 31/08/2014 23:25

I really like Baltar, and just love how crazy he is, but Ina just this side of acceptable way.

I also love how the society seems to have a very even balance between men and women. If you look at the crowd scenes, even in the military there's an even mix, and there's no fuss made about having female characters as leaders etc.

I really hate how 6 wears such revealing outfits. I know it's a reflection of Baltar's sleazy brain, but I'm at the section where she's wearing a black halter top which quite frankly needs to be hitched up an inch or two. Mind you, I think the amount of gratuitous nudity is pretty even for male/female.

We always laugh about the corners cut off pages. Apparently they regretted that really early on, but stuck with it anyway.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 31/08/2014 23:31

Oh, god, I bet ... that must have taken fucking ages. Though I do like it as a touch. Little things like that really add to the feel of it, for me.

I know what you mean about Six and Baltar. It annoyed me so much when I first watched it - especially early on when we didn't know who she was - because it's so sleazy.

Though, Baltar does get the best sleazy lines. Something like 'can you feel God, Gaius' from one of the religious groupies and he replies 'oh, yes, I think so!'

Bleugh, but also very funny because it's so cheesy.

I always really want to see the bit they don't show, between where Kara turns up in her blue dress at the bar, and she ends up sleeping with Baltar. Because I think the scene of him chatting her up (or vice versa) could have been great.

AmpleRaspberries · 31/08/2014 23:38

Ahh just seen this as I'm about to go to bed. Love BSG!

Yes, the corners missing from everything made me & DH chuckle. It just made no sense, you make paper and just cut it straight to get sheets. Who thought having a society that randomly took extra bits out made sense?

I liked how they always said they had an ending in sight so I never felt they were just making it up as they went along (I'm looking at you Lost)

Pipbin · 31/08/2014 23:48

I loved BSG. DH and I watched the whole thing one episode a night.

Sadly I have forgotten damn near all of it.
