I never watched it when it was actually on. I am currently re-watching to distract myself from various irritating and tedious things going on in RL. I love it, I think it's brilliant. I especially love how they write the women as being pretty much as physically strong as men (and able to beat men at boxing), but without bothering to explain the details of it. And I love the religion side of it.

But here's what bugs me:

  1. How does Adama never cotton on that his son is in love with Kara? I know he's not the most perceptive father, but come on!

  2. Why do they never replace the glass panel in the control room with something non-shattering after the first, oh, hundred times it breaks?

  3. What the fuck is meant to be going on with Lampkin and his (very dead) cat?

Thank you. Smile

He is.

I also loved the scripts, though. 'And we shall call it .... this land!' Grin

I think his and Zoe's relationship was great.

Sighs contentedly

Good to find some other girl geeks on here. DH and I loved BSG and Firefly - we have all of both shows on box set. This thread has reminded me to dig them out and watch them again, which will mean getting the BSG prequel miniseries back from my neighbour. (I also totally agree about the even-handedness of the hottie casting, which was unusually agreeable for a female sci-fi fan. And the costumes were not a fail - there was plenty of mighty fine physique on show.)

I read Enders Game earlier this year (off the back of enjoying the recent film adaptation), but I couldn't make head nor tail of which book came after. It seems he wrote several overlapping series. Can anyone here make sense of it for me?

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 01/09/2014 21:06

Thurlow back right off. Mal is mine and I've got the username to prove it Smile.

Upping the obscurity stakes, did anyone watch a UK vampire series called Ultraviolet? Had Idris Elba pre-The Wire - mmmmm.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 01/09/2014 21:23

I have a sticker on the back of my car saying 'Everything's shiny captain, not to fret' Grin

strawberrypenguin · 01/09/2014 21:28

Nooo, don't watch Caprica it was terrible! They really lost where they were going with it and the end was WTF?! Blood and Chrome was good though.

Thurlow · 01/09/2014 21:31

Grin OK, you may win on that one, mrsmalcolm. Can I have him on a loaner one weekend if you're distracted by anyone else?

BSG is a better programme by miles when you look at the whole thing, but Firefly makes me laugh so much. That scene where they discover River in a box and realise the fed is after Simon, not Mal. "Ohhhh, him. Err, is there a reward?"

Upping the geek states I am also rereading The Dark Tower series, which is slightly confusing me as a slightly older Nathan Fillion would make a fantastic Roland.

(I would stop babbling but in my defence I have lost my voice and haven't said a word to anyone all day. Turns out it is very hard to mime anything more complex than "tea"...)

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 01/09/2014 21:33

Moomin that's awesome! Where did you get it, and do they do one that says "I'll be in my bunk" Grin?

Shallan · 01/09/2014 21:35

dustbunny after Enders game read speaker for the dead, then xenocide, then children of the mind. That's the sequence that follows ender, and they were written straight after Enders game as sequels. However they actually happen a long time after the war ends, because ender travels through space so skips a lot of time (like mazer rackham did)

Orson Scott card then subsequently went back and started the other, sequence which follows the rest of ender's battle school squad straight after the war ends - I think that sequence starts with Enders shadow (which is mainly about bean), but don't like it as much.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 01/09/2014 21:37

OH got it for me, think from amazon - www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=bl_sr_automotive?ie=UTF8&field-keywords=Ritrama&index=automotive&search-type=ss - not sure about the I'll be in my bunk, you can get it on a t-shirt though Grin

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 01/09/2014 21:42

I have to admit I ran out of steam on about book three of The Dark Tower - I found the horror elements a bit wearing after a while. DH is still going strong with it though! We both gave up on the Wheel of Time though, even before the author died without finishing it.

Thurlow · 01/09/2014 21:43

Now I want a Thundercats sticker...

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 01/09/2014 21:55

Oh, and Thurlow if you can source Wolverine or whatever Christian Bale's character was called in Equilibrium you may borrow Mal but I shall require a deposit.

Thurlow · 01/09/2014 22:00

I'll start hunting...

FoodSchmood · 01/09/2014 22:22

We're just rewatching it (for about the 5th time) so we can watch and read the AV club write ups that have just begun from season 1 with each episode... Am so looking forward to seeing it all again!

I always liked this of the Beastie Boys Sabotage and BSG! (There's a side by side comparison of the two videos . It's impressive how well she's matched the shots! Would have made an awesome trailer for the show! :D

Thurlow · 02/09/2014 17:40

Did the sudden side move into perving Mal Reynolds kill the thread? Sad

Will this bring it back on track?

to ask you to indulge me with chat about Battlestar Gallactica, even though it ended ages ago?
o0 · 02/09/2014 17:47

I will happily perv over Mal all day. Grin

I may or may not have read lots of fanfic just to enjoy more Mal stories. Blush

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 02/09/2014 18:00

Perving Mal should never kill a thread. It should bring it to life Grin

Thurlow · 02/09/2014 18:14

I watched the episode where Mal gets accidentally married today. Swoon. Love that episode.

DustBunnyFarmer · 02/09/2014 19:29

Oooh, Thurlow. Thank you for that picture (17:40). I know what we'll be watching tonight.....

Becca19962014 · 02/09/2014 20:02

I loved BSG.

I avoided it for years because I had enjoyed the original (1980 not withstanding) and most remakes are pretty dire but eventually did watch it. I really enjoyed it, though there were bits which left me wondering. Ended up with all of the DVDs and the movies and then made myself watch all the movies at the right points in the series just to see if they tied in properly Grin (yes I watched the survivors number to see if it changed too!) then when it finished got both the old series on DVD yes even 1980!!

I enjoyed firefly though felt it had just got going when it um went. Likewise Caprica (another I only watched because I found the DVDs really cheap). Caprica seemed too complicated for it's own good and even the additional information on the DVDs, particularly the catchup from season 1 to 1.5 was seriously messed up (as in totally wrong!!)

But my favourite is Babylon5. I remember someone saying BSG was designed the same way Babylon5 was, to run only for 4 seasons and do an entire arc (yes there was a series five of babylon5 but it isn't part of the arc if you watch it seems disjointed from the other 4) which is why I think I liked BSG so much. They planned to do the same with Caprica but the moving of the storyline was far too slow and far too complicated and that was what killed it, well in my opinion anyway.

I'm soooo glad to have found this thread Grin

LRDtheFeministDragon · 02/09/2014 20:25

So which bits got you wondering?

I've never seen Babylon 5. Should I watch it? And, most importantly, does it have any eye candy?

Didn't Mal accidentally get married to Christina Hendricks?

Ender's Game - if you want to know what happened to Ender, read Speaker for the Dead and follow from there - but bear in mind that it gets philosophical and odd, and happens many years later due to relativistic-speed-space-flights.

If you want to have more clever kids having battles, read Ender's Shadow (approximately same story re-told from Bean's perspective, which I really enjoyed) and then follow the adventures of Bean and the other Battle School graduates on Earth in the immediate aftermath of the war.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 02/09/2014 20:33

He did. I love that episode.

Funny, I never managed to find Mal Reynolds, I think because I first saw Nathan Fillion in Buffy and he was soo creepy that it never went away.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 02/09/2014 20:39

Christina Hendricks as YoSaffBridge Grin

I'm in a proper sci fi mood now. OH writes science fiction and I've read everything he's written, I want him to write more!!!
