to find the ice bucket thing embarrassing

I do realise it's for charity and am happy to donate to charity but I find it cringeworthy and teenage all these sort of things which circulate on facebook - no make up, nominating people etc

I don't usually partake in much though always donate. However I'd been nominated by my young niece's and felt I shouldn't be a spoilt sport. . Not only do I have a horrible sore throat after throwing ice on myself, but I was devastated to see how massive I looked on video!

icanmakeyouicecream · 31/08/2014 19:21

I agree.

'I've been nominated' 'I was nominated' cringe cringe cringe. The whole thing is cringeworthy.

cerealqueen · 31/08/2014 19:23

If I'm nominated, I'll delete the post. I choose which charities to donate to, and what goes on my Facebook page. I won't be shamed into anything!

GingerSkin · 31/08/2014 19:24

YABU - it's a bit of a giggle and fun to do between couples or with kids, add in the charity donation, what's not to like?

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 31/08/2014 19:30

dippy

I looked massive too. It's just a bit of fun, if you don't want to do it don't do it.

A friend opted to donate double and got her fiancé to do the challenge for her.

SignYourNameInBrownAndFlame · 31/08/2014 19:31

I'm usually the first to criticise Facebook slacktivism and stupid cryptic status updates supposed to "raise awareness" which do no such thing, but this has made a huge difference - as in tens of millions of dollars/hundreds of thousands of pounds of difference to various charities - so I can't get too incensed by it. If you're nominated, do it or don't, donate or don't as you wish; it's a choice not an obligation.

Sirzy · 31/08/2014 19:34

Pretty much exactly what signyourname said.

I liked the fact that this was for a charity/illness which is rarely spoken about and isn't often the centre of fundraising so will really benefit from it all.

Nobody is forced to take part.

Spadequeen · 31/08/2014 19:36

If you don't like it don't do it, but why have a go at those that do?

Gatekeeper · 31/08/2014 19:38

I wonder if anyone who posts their challenges just sees it as a dare, rather than an opportunity to donate to charity? There have been dozens and dozens of posts on my dd facebook page and I bet a good portion of them don't realise the idea behind it

seasavage · 31/08/2014 19:38

It is a chain letter for the digital age.

Jengnr · 31/08/2014 19:41

Oh ffs either do it or don't. Nobody cares. The posturing about not wanting to do it is even more cringeworthy and just a load of attention seeking.

Spadequeen · 31/08/2014 19:52

Agreed Jen. A cousin got pissed off with some gentle ribbing he got for not doing it, he then demanded a public apology - twat!

holdyourown · 31/08/2014 20:09

Grin seasavage
Opportunity to show off imo. immature and embarrassing. Makes me despair a bit tbh along the lines of when did everyone get so egocentric.
Perhaps better just quit facebook altogether as it's getting like the playground.

OP posts:
MammaTJ · 31/08/2014 20:11

No Make Up-Shock horror! All those people appearing with their naked faces! How very dare they!

Ragwort · 31/08/2014 20:13

How much is it actually raising? I thought people were being nominated to have the ice thrown over them rather than donate?

You know, there is life beyond Facebook Grin - it is not essential to use it but I think donating to a charity raising funds for MN is very worthwhile, it is a terrible disease,

holdyourown · 31/08/2014 20:15

yes I don't really go on it much, can be nice to catch up with friends overseas etc but otherwise fairly pointless. Agreed charity fundraising is good perhaps people could do a cake sale or walk or something though Smile or volunteer (without accompanying fb boasting)

OP posts:
hollie84 · 31/08/2014 20:18

$50 million or something so far Ragwort, plus millions more for MND and MacMillan in the UK.

Like Jengnr I find the posturing about being above such things much more annoying than the actual ice buckets/selfies.

womblesofwestminster · 31/08/2014 20:26

YANBU funny how the stuff that goes viral always appeals to attention whores.

ICanSeeTheSun · 31/08/2014 20:29

I did it and donated to the uk asl all a bit of summer fun.

Yama · 31/08/2014 20:36

I just go awol from FB for a few days when the requests to be a lemming starts the rounds.

Bakeoffcakes · 31/08/2014 20:43

Yes you're right OP, this whole thing should never have happened.

$50million wouldn't have been raised and research into this terrible disease would have been delayed. But you wouldn't have had to it up with those awful attention seekers!

Seriously though, I usually don't like FB etc but the way it's been used in this case is bloody amazing IMO.

superstarheartbreaker · 31/08/2014 20:46

It's the funniest thing ever and I love the fact that it's very immature and daft!

toldmywrath · 31/08/2014 20:51

It's a waste of water for a start (unless using rainwater in your garden) Plus, if you look at the charity's accounts, not much of it at all goes to the research side(the ceo earns £300,000 pa)Only a small percentage goes on actual funding.
yanbu op

hollie84 · 31/08/2014 20:53

Paddling pools are a waste of water too.
