I do realise it's for charity and am happy to donate to charity but I find it cringeworthy and teenage all these sort of things which circulate on facebook - no make up, nominating people etc

Only 15% of donations going towards research.

Over half of donations going towards 'public education' e.g how many other idiots can we get to pay our £300,000 a year wages.

Yes it is a terrible disease that affects around 5000 people in the uk. But at least research the charities you are handing money to.

They really have hit the Ching Ching now everyone jumps on the social media attention seeking bandwagon.

Hulababy · 31/08/2014 20:57

AFAIK ALS and MND have made more money from this one viral event in the past few weeks than they ever do in a year normally, so it can't be all bad surely?!

Its a bit of fun, but with a serious side - the donating to a worthwhile charity. More people have now heard of ALS/MND than before hand, which also has to be good too.

It is not forced. You don't have to do it. I know plenty who have chosen not to be involved at all. All is fine. Noone has made them do it and they are none the worse for not having done it.

But what's wrong with taking part if you want to?

I did not have a video doing it. I uploaded a cropped photo showing water going over me. I do not appear in photos ordinarily so this was a rare thing - photo of me on social media! It was still quite vague tbh. I didn't nominate anyone directly at all. I didn't feel the need to post evidence of my donation - which we had actually already made prior to being nominated anyway. TBH I only did it really as DD was nominated and wanted to do it - so I was outside and involved in helping her anyway.

So for me there was also no showing off involved whatsoever. Hmm

Hulababy · 31/08/2014 21:01

And apparently 15% is incorrect anyway.

Other sources vary and all appear a fair but higher than 15% on research.
This one for example states:

Public and profession education - 32%
Research - 27%
Patient and community services - 19%
Fundraising - 14%
Administration - 7%

BurnThisDiscoDown · 31/08/2014 21:03

I did it to raise money and awareness, I would usually rather stick pins in my eyes than put a video of me in all my fat mingy glory for public consumption. So, not showing off here. Smile

Sirzy · 31/08/2014 21:13

And of course their admin costs aren't going to go up significantly because of this (unless they use it a a chance to take on more staff to help develop things further) so the donations will increase the amount of money available to fund research and increase awareness which is fantastic.

CromerSutra · 31/08/2014 21:25

"Attention whores" that's nice. Christ almighty, it's a bit of fun with the aim of raising a lot of money for charity. I totally understand if people don't want to do it but I don't understand the need to be so nasty about people that do .

hollie84 · 31/08/2014 21:26

For which charity is that Hulababy? ALS or MND?

x2boys · 31/08/2014 21:28

The thin g is lots of money has been raised for ALS /MND and I,m seeing people donating to other charities not just the big ones but charities close to people hearts it maybe a bit altruistic buts its raising loads of money and that's fantastic .

polomoomin · 31/08/2014 21:30

Yabu to mention it. I'm sick of hearing about it tbh. It'll all be forgotten about in a month or so and I can't bloody wait. The only one I liked was Matt Damon's because he's the only one sensible enough not to waste precious water.

x2boys · 31/08/2014 21:32

Yes I liked matt Damon ,s too was very impressed he used toilet water!

Kimaroo · 31/08/2014 21:38

You moaning Minnies sound like dp! He's been a right misery guts about the whole thing. The rest of us friends and family have had a great couple of weeks laughing at each other getting soaked and have raised £500 between us. Most have donated to MIND, which is I believe the uk version of ALS, I donated to Refuge and some others the Teenage Cancer Trust. I've thoroughly enjoyed my FB feed and I never normally say that!

Kimaroo · 31/08/2014 21:39

MIND = MND

CromerSutra · 31/08/2014 22:29

That'll be the Matt Damon who lives in a $20 million Florida mansion with 9 bathrooms and a bloody massive swimming pool.....yep, he lives a really frugal life!

SylvaniansKeepGettingHoovered · 31/08/2014 22:30

YANBU, it seems to have got worse in the last few days with toddlers and young children being roped in

cheepsskram · 31/08/2014 22:37

It is nowhere near embarrassed as my mum was the first time I had to take her to the toilet because her stupid thumbs wouldn't work so she couldn't pull down or up her trousers thanks to MND.

I'd make myself look stupid every day to help find a cure for this disease.

Spadequeen · 31/08/2014 22:39

Well said cheap.

SaltySeaBird · 31/08/2014 22:46

I've been nominated now. I'm going to do it, but for a different charity that is close to my heart (although I've learnt a lot about ALS so it's helped my awareness, there is a local charity that I'd rather donate to though). I'm not going to nominate anyone else though.

I'm going to do it with cold dirty dishwater instead of clean ice water.

MrsWinnibago · 31/08/2014 22:48

I don't like the pressure. A friend said "Oh you HAVE to" and got quite snippy when I said I would not be doing it. Luckily my friends on FB know me better than to nominate me. I'd never do it.

MrsWinnibago · 31/08/2014 22:49

What I wonder is if the people who really love it all feel a bit sad once it all fades away...will they invent something else?

Mim78 · 31/08/2014 22:54

I am glad I have not been nominate yet!

RonaldMcDonald · 31/08/2014 23:00

I think it is fantastic

Cheeky76890 · 31/08/2014 23:10

I never put selfies on FB but didn't mind a short clip for fun and for charity. Also the causes are close to my heart - so more reason to partake. I used garden water which was extra chilly

Cheeky76890 · 31/08/2014 23:12

Must admit I quietly felt total dread on being nominated. Was a relief to get it over with

WineWineWine · 31/08/2014 23:28

It's the only video of me I have ever posted. I do not attention seek, its not my thing at all. I nominated 3 friends and invited them to do it if they wanted to and to choose any charity they wanted. 2 did it, 1 didn't. I wouldn't dream of hassling him for opting out.
Loads of my little nieces and nephews have done it, because they wanted to, and they absolutely loved it.

If you don't like it, just ignore it, but don't whine about other people doing it. They are having fun, raising money and have got people talking about a horrible disease that many people knew nothing about before this started.

sheepgomeep · 01/09/2014 03:38

Its the pressure i dont like either. Fair enough its a bit of fun, raises money for charity but no one should be made to feel pressured into doing these things. Two people have had a massive falling out over the ice challenge on my fb. My friends friend didnt like that she donated to another charity instead and became v nasty. I have had comments too because I really dont want to do it due to health issues.

I get that it is a great thing to do but no pressure.

Half the people on my fb didnt donate anyway ' its to raise awareness innit ' Hmm
